"Mr. Shteyngart said. His 2014 memoir, 'Little Failure,' is a chronicle of ill-fitting clothes and disapproving parents who seem convinced that he is not going to meet their traditional immigrant expectations. His father hits him at home. At school, bullies await."
From "Is Gary Shteyngart One of the Last Novelists to Make Real Money From the Craft?/Mr. Shteyngart was once told he might be. With his sixth novel, 'Vera, or Faith,' out now, he’s spent the last few years spending it well" (NYT).
About that new novel: "In an era when the charge of cultural appropriation still carries professional risk (though perhaps not quite as much risk as five years ago), Mr. Shteyngart’s decision to write in the voice of a tween Korean American girl was a bold one. He said he was partly motivated by his own son’s experience. 'He and his little friends, they mention Trump all the time,' he said. 'And when you’re growing up and you have to think about the Great Leader all the time, that’s always going to stick with you.'"

My girlfriend left me. She caught me in bed with pasta. I was feeling cannelloni.
I bought "Vera, or Faith" — both Kindle and audiobook.
Festivus! I have a lot of problems with you people.
Of course, Shteyngart feels obliged to depict a dysopian America. What a brave artist. I hope the advance and royalties compensate him fairly for the public outcry that will follow from his willingness to speak truth to power.
Another verbally agile worm.
He's the guy who told us that he went to a George Bush rally or victory celebration and the rich blonde girls thought he was a waiter. I guess if you're a congenital fabulist, then "novelist" is a natural career choice.
I can only guess, if further details weren't provided -- but I suspect Gary doesn't like the fact that the kids like Trump. Still must be some kind of fascist phenomenon.
Well, It would be rude to leave this topic and not ask, with great concern, how is Gary's you-know-what?

This guy is brain damaged. When I was a kid in school we had to think about JFK all the time, and Jackie, who probably would have thought he was a waiter. Not sure I could stand the pathos of reading one of his books.
How much money you make writing novels is a function of 1) How generous your publishers are (2) How much the reading public likes you and (3) How much critics like you 4) how much the publishers "push" your book.
My Suspicion is that Mr. Strygarden or whatever is well loved by the critics and publishers and has hardcore fans who buy everything he writes.
It took years for Jack Kerouac to get "on the road" published because it "wasn't the kind of novel publishers were looking for". Even after that success he never got much money from his novels, despite their popularity.
I think I tried to read one of his books, but lost interest. I'm not a fan of "growing up" memoirs particularly if its about someone's sad or pathetic childhood/teenage years. I didn't like Angela's Ashes either.
I'd rather read Life with Father or Little House on the Praire. Since these "Growing up Memoirs" are really about the parents and the historical situation.
Is Gary Shteyngart One of the Last Novelists to Make Real Money From the Craft?
Stephen King hasn’t made real money from writing novels? J. K. Rowling certainly has.
"...he’s spent the last few years spending it well." Is that repetition in the headline -- he's "spent" his time by "spending" his money -- intentional (with some hidden meaning I'm not picking up on), or just poor copy-editing?
Michael Connelly, Robert Crais, Mick Herron, Lee Goldberg, James Burke, John Sandford--all still making pretty good coin.
Does ‘orange wine’ refer to the color, like the way Provence rose has orange tones, or did some VA goof ball think fermented valencias was a good idea?
Orange wine is a form of white wine, but the grape skins are left in with the juice for an extended time during fermentation, resulting in an orange-ish color. It's very trendy right now.
He does not specify how they mention Trump. Is it with fear that if they say something negative, they will go to work and reeducation camps? Because that was the reality with the "Great Leader". I do not think anyone sane worries about that with Trump. I am mistrustful of anyone who thinks of themselves as a great novelist. I consider people like JK Rowlings and Stephen King, who are able to write books that millions of people will pay for, to be great novelists. Even if the works in question, like most of King's stuff, leaves me cold. In the words of RAH, novelists are competing for beer money. And beer is GOOD. If you win that battle, then you are a great novelist.
Props to James and the first comment. I laughed.
Umm. Who?
