Understated sunrise without the sun.

We were there for this at 5:16:

Later, I continued my practice of sitting in the front-yard and reading an entire book. Sample page:

I showed that photo of the page to my son John, who said, "When I was a kid I loved that kind of understated humor" and sent me Salvador Dali's "Fried Egg on the Plate without the Plate":

Understated humor... and yet when the sun does something like that sunny-side-up egg, I consider it one of the most extravagant sunrises of the year. Like this, from last May:

Feel free to understate or overstate whatever you like in the comments.

And consider supporting this blog by purchasing a readable-in-one-sitting book by Edward Gorey using my Amazon Associates link. The book containing the threatened deviled egg is "The Betrayed Confidence."

I hasten to add Gorey's contribution to the opening credits of PBS Mystery series. I wonder how Gorey felt about Chas Addams?

Last night, Heartless Aztec mentioned that he had acquired a copy of the 1972 album by Jackie Deshannon titled "Jackie" at the used record store in the dollar bargain bin, and that he really enjoyed it. I took the recommendation and looked for it on Amazon Music this morning to stream at work. The version on Amazon is titled "Jackie... Plus," and it was a 2003 re-issue by Rhino records that had all 12 of the songs on the original vinyl album, as well as an additional 12 songs, two of which had been released on a single in 1973 (a duet with Van Morrison titled "Sweet Sixteen" backed with "Speak Out to Me") and ten of which had never previously been released. Most of the additional material was R&B, and it was pretty good. I enjoyed the whole thing.

Here's "Sweet Sixteen" with Van Morrison:
https://youtu.be/RILrnY42ePo?si=gp5ftyN5vCbZDHSt

and here's one of the previously unreleased songs, "Your Old Lady's Leaving":
https://youtu.be/nzxOuUURDYw?si=c-zju9HRfd1GObBu

Hard to believe that this song and the other unreleased ones languished in the Atlantic vaults for over 30 years before seeing the light of day. Among the background singers was Cissy Houston. I couldn't find out who the horn players were, since they are uncredited on all of the information I looked through, but I suspect that they may have used the Memphis Horns from Stax Records. After listening to this, I had to break out the Sam & Dave and The Blues Brothers Soundtrack.

It's entirely possible that Musk is going to start a third party. He's going to spend $50 to $60 billion dollars, something crazy like that, with a group of his friends, to start a third party, because he's talking about that.

Is there a way to set up an endowment for a third party that's outside of the two parties that are running the country off the cliff in terms of out-of-control spending?

Trump is now a decaying political asset. And you can mark today, which is the anniversary of the Normandy invasion, the 6th of June. Trump is now a decaying political asset because you've got Musk, who is going to pull the plug on the algorithm. Elon is going to put pressure on them in ways that people cannot imagine, even if they declare a truce. And he's going to get wounded in a way that people are going to be surprised by because Elon has a lot of followers in Silicon Valley.

They're going to start writing checks to non-MAGA people. And the Republicans are going to shift gears as Trump goes into the midterms as a decaying asset.

Predicted by several here (not me)..
Even if un-expected, Trump and Musk need to act as if it was a 4D chess move..

NY Post:

"Democrats have since seized on Musk’s claim, sending Bondi and Patel a letter on Thursday requesting the complete unsealing of the investigative file into Epstein.

“We write with profound alarm at allegations that files relating to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein have not been declassified and released to the American public because they personally implicate President Trump,” Reps. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.) and Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-Mass.) wrote in their letter.

“We ask that you immediately clarify whether this allegation is true and respond to this letter with the requested information and documentation.”

Today is the anniversary of D-Day, June 6, 1944. Bu that point my father had led a company of combat engineers through four amphibious landings, in North Africa, Sicily, Salerno, and Anzio. He got a Silver Star for something he had done during the fighting in Italy — he always treated it lightly when I asked what he had done to earn it. After he passed away I found the citation for that medal among his papers. Wow. Just wow.

Elon loves money more than power. No way will he start a third party and run for POTUS. A third party would guaranty a Dem President. We’d be bankrupt.

Never understood why June 6th has become a "Thing", the most important Day in WW II for Americans. Because it wasn't for people at the time. December 7th was the most important day. And V-J day, when the war actually ended.

Had D-Day failed it probably wouldn't have made that much difference to the USA. We were fighting our own war in the Pacific (1/3 of all KIA), and the Soviets were marching onto Berlin, no matter what. And we'd aleady opened a 2nd front - the war in Italy and airwar over Germany.

But I guess if you make a movie about something like The longest day and Saving Private Ryan, people think its the important thing.

Sorry, but I have to disagree. In my opinion once D Day was undertaken there was a window where the American public was willing to suffer for a great goal. If the invasion had been turned back with high casualties support on the home front would have turned and elections could have gone back to isolationism, even in the Pacific. The impact of the Blitz was covered up a bit by Brit bluster and the impact of the V1 and V2 was higher that the news of the day let on. If Hitler could have diverted more resources to the eastern front and kept up the attack on Britain there may have been a truce that allowed the enslavement of Europe. If nuclear explosive work had continued, we may have had a multi detonation event in Europe to purge the Germans that would have been society changing.

It’s interesting that to a soldier in 1944, the civil war battle of Sharpsburg was 80 years in the past. To us, the battle of France on D Day was 80 years in our past. In 1944 soldiers knew men of the civil war like we know men who fought at D Day. The American nation would have been greatly affected if the invasion armada were turned back, we would have said screw it and crawled in a hole.

You forgot to add that was worldwide.

The Tesla model Y was number 4 in the U.S. Following the Toyota Rav 4 at no. 3, the Chevy Silverado at no.2 and the Ford F series at no. 1

Second - WE recognize D-day because it was the day brave American men along with brothers in arms, Canadian and British soldiers - ran into the jaws of death... so that the allies could defeat Hitler.

"If the invasion had been turned back with high casualties support on the home front would have turned and elections could have gone back to isolationism, even in the Pacific. "

The motivation for WW 2 for most Americans was defeating Japan that had launched a sneak attack on December 7th. Nobody was talking about "isolationism" - people were talking about winning the war.

People would've been perfectly happy to continue to fight in Europe by defeating the Germans in Italy and bombing Germany. Whether we landed in France or not in 1944 was just a matter of strategy. Nobody was upset we didn't land in France in 43 or 42. Except for some commies that wanted a "Second front".

You're completing exaggerating the importance of D-Day to Americans in 1944.

Two very different -- yet, rather congruent-- appreciations of female sexual power;
Carrie Underwood, singing "Poor Everybody Else". And Nellie Furtado, singing "Maneater".
God, they're good!

Jupiter said...

They are "appreciations", in the military sense. I don't think either of these women are "celebrating" the way female sexual power is deployed, but neither do they deplore it. Their songs exhibit it, as a social phenomenon, while, in fact, they rather effortlessly deploy it themselves. Hey! Wanna kiss me? Of course you wanna kiss me. Everybody wanna be with me or be me.

If you are saying that it was unimportant to attack the German Atlantic wall and better to fight Japan first, then Hitler would have been safe behind his fortifications and free for Rommel to improve them. The Normandy defenses were built over 3 months and were bad enough. The coast could have been completely saturated with mines and concrete 4 months later making the invasion by sea practically impossible. This would have had the consequences of moving the V1 and V2 weapons closer to England and making US basing on the “unsinkable aircraft carrier” untenable.

The 8th and 9th Air Force was a necessary but not sufficient contributor to victory by reducing the Luftwaffe that could have attacked the invasion fleet by P47 and P51 escorts, and by bombing aircraft factories that quickly went underground, and more importantly the bombing of synthetic oil plants that make avgas, but Hitler, I assaulted at the Atlantic could have maintained oil flow from Romania, Baku, and Persia. Non-nuclear strategic bombing was not going to drive hitler out of France.

Russia needed Pattons 3d Armor to destroy numbers of the waffen SS during the Breakout and the Battle of the Bulge so that when the Russians approached Berlin they were fighting mostly 16 year olds and 60 year olds instead of some of the meanest soldiers around. Without D Day it would have been bad. 550,000 American casualties were suffered from D Day to VE Day. What were these men doing when they were killed and wounded? They were killing Germans that would have sat waiting for the Russians in Berlin.

I think D Day was one of the most sublime gifts the US ever gave to the world.

Perhaps 6/6 isn't an important day to Americans, but talk to the French and ask them. My wife and I were in Normandy in April and you can go anywhere without seeing a memorial to something or someone from the Allies. When you talk to someone, young or old, they KNOW who was responsible for their freedom and they honor it, they respect it. They pass that down from generation to generation. Quite frankly, in some respects, they treat and honor our veterans better than we do.
