Good news and bad from the crash of Air India flight 171 from Ahmedabad, India, to Gatwick Airport near London. The bad news is that the crash killed 241 people on board and something on the order of another 50 on the ground. The good news is that on man survived from on board, a British citizen named Vishwash Kumar Ramesh seated in seat 11A according to his boarding pass, managed to open an emergency exit and walk out of the crashed plane. In fact, I’ve seen a short video clip of him, bloody and looking dazed, walking unaided to an ambulance.

If I were him I’d refrain from buying a lottery ticket or playing poker anytime soon — he’s clearly used up his luck fof the next ten years.

11A sounds like it could be business class. The only thing I've heard is they did an intersection take off on a 11,000 ft runway with only 6,300 ft remaining. That could be doable ordinarily, but apparently not today. It was also a very hot day, which lessens performance. Still, all that stuff should be calculated by the pilots, so they know if they have margin.

@Leland, according to Mr. Ramesh, about 30 seconds after the plane got airborne there was a “loud noise” and then the plane crashed right afterwards. This is backed up by security camera footage that shows the plane lifting smoothly from the runway, then it seems to stagger for a moment, and proceeds to sink down — still in the same nose-up attitude as when it took off,l — until there’s a red and black fireball as the plane impacts the ground. The CCTV footage is 47 seconds long.

Since Clyde brought up Beach Boy parodies, a fellow-student in college 50+ years ago used to sing two lines of one of their biggest hits in a very competent falsetto:

"Wouldn't it be nice if we had testes,
so we wouldn't have to sing this way?"

Now I can't remember the genuine lyrics. (Don't tell me, I can look them up if I want to know.) Similarly, I have to be careful if I mention Flannery O'Connor's most famous short story in polite company. It's "A Good Man is Hard to Find", not (as a woman I once knew used to say) "A Hard Man is Good to Find".

Keys to Cristina Fernández de Kirchner’s conviction ( Buenos Aires Times)

"(2007-2015) will spend the next six years in detention with a lifelong ban on public office after the Supreme Court confirmed her conviction for corruption in the so-called ‘Vialidad’ case probing the awarding of fraudulent highway contract allocations.

What did this trial consist of? And what other legal woes does she face? Here, we break down the case against the polarising 72-year-old – the driving Peronist force on Argentina’s political left for the past two decades and leader of the opposition to President Javier Milei's budget-slashing agenda.

Prosecutors accused Fernández de Kirchner of "fraudulent administration" and "illicit association" when adjudicating public works tenders in southern Santa Cruz Province during her two-term 2007-2015 presidency.

Most of the contracts went to Lázaro Báez, a business associate of Fernández de Kirchner and her late husband, ex-president Néstor Kirchner.

At her trial in 2022, the prosecution asked for a 12-year prison sentence and a perpetual ban on public office, triggering protests in several cities.

The trial began in 2019. Three years later, she was found guilty by a court of first instance of fraudulent administration but not illicit association, which is why she was convicted with a six-year prison sentence and the ban on political activity.

Both Kirchner and the prosecution, which pushed for a heavier sentence, appealed the verdict, but it was confirmed by an appeals court in 2024.

The defence and the attorney-general then appealed again, this time to the Supreme Court, the former requesting acquittal and the latter a stiffer sentence. The top tribunal on Tuesday dismissed both requests, thereby rendering the 2022 conviction and sentence definitive.

Fernández de Kirchner’s defence

The ex-president denies any wrongdoing. She has dubbed the case “lawfare,” saying it is designed to drive her out of politics and intimidate her centre-left Peronist party, the main opposition to the Milei government.

She argues that there is no evidence directly linking her to the contracts since the budgets were approved by Congress and distributed by office of the Cabinet chief, not by the President, and implemented by the Santa Cruz provincial government, where the works were carried out."

Trump is probably not a micro-manager. She may or may not have asked him before she did it. Maybe she's pushing Trump a little. Anyway, she's warning us about nuclear holocaust. So I hope Putin and/or Zelensky and/or NATO are all paying attention. And I hope the people of those countries (and other countries) are also paying attention.

I ask everybody who prays to pray to God to avoid nuclear war. Divine intervention is a thing, and sometimes we need it.

On June 12, Israel attacked Iran and tried to demolish its nuclear capabilities.

My take-away is that Tulsi Gabbard is open and honest.

I ask people again to pray that we avoid any nuclear war.

Israel will be blamed, as Japan was blamed for Pearl Harbor. My hope and prayer is that they were successful, and that Iran's nuclear program was bombed into nothingness. God bless.

President Donald Trump ordered the arrest of protesters simply for wearing masks. “MASKS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED to be worn at protests,” he posted on social media on Sunday. “What do these people have to hide, and why???”

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, unidentified agents of the government are arriving at privately owned businesses and residences, wearing masks, carrying long guns, and dressed to go to war, while refusing to provide identification or warrants. But it is easy to buy tactical gear online. And around the country, bigots and criminals have already begun taking advantage of chaotic, masked immigration raids to further their ends. Civilians have impersonated ICE agents while committing robbery (Pennsylvania), kidnappings (Florida, South Carolina), sexual assault (North Carolina), and other forms of public intimidation (Washington state, California).

“What do these people have to hide, and why???” Lawyers representing arrested people are unable to locate where those arrested were taken, which is against the law.

I’m frightened to learn however this Boasberg is a ‘friend’ of Justice Roberts and law school roommate of Kavanaugh. Silly me to assume all these Hawaiian judges were C averages groomed by DC consulting firms to do the left’s bidding. The link is here

“[Boasberg’s] increasingly fantastical injunctions continue to threaten serious harm to the Government’s national-security and foreign-affairs interests,” the Trump DOJ wrote in a motion this week.

But it appears Boasberg’s actions are doing much more than that. And when the smoke clears in Los Angeles and other cities preparing for more unrest this weekend, Americans should look to the E. Barrett Prettyman federal courthouse in the nation’s capital for who to blame.

One of the problems with prayer is that there are evil spirits in the afterlife who will try to deceive you and lead you away from God. You might ask why God allows these evil spirits to exist. You might as well ask why God allows Hitler or Stalin to exist. God allows us free will -- his great gift to humanity -- and he's not going to strip us of our free will in the afterlife.

Jesus is the one who introduced us to Satan. He was fasting for 40 days, in an attempt to strengthen his prayers and his communications with our Father. He was perhaps surprised when an evil spirit answered his prayers. Jesus called this evil spirit Satan, which means Opposition. Christians sometimes refer to this spirit as anti-Christ. If you want to gauge where somebody is spiritually, ask them about Jesus and what they think about him.

Anyway, I'm sure Muhammad did a lot of praying and seeking for God. I have no doubts about that! But you have to be careful when you pray, and recognize that evil spirits might be responding to your prayer.

I have not read the Koran. Hamas cites the Koran for its terrorism. From the Hamas charter...

“The Day of Judgement will not come about until Moslems fight the Jews (killing the Jews), when the Jew will hide behind stones and trees. The stones and trees will say O Moslems, O Abdulla, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him. Only the Gharkad tree, (evidently a certain kind of tree) would not do that because it is one of the trees of the Jews."

I ask Hamas, and now I ask Iran, what if Israel is the Gharkad tree?

The reporter also tells us that...

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned that the operation — whose scale already stands alone in history — is not over.

I'm not sure what you mean by "stands alone in history."

Also not sure what you mean by "scale."

If I had reporters who were reporting that this is the first time one country has ever attacked another country, and that this is the biggest attack in world history, I believe I would give my reporters a little vacay and ask them to calm down before they report on another war in the Middle East.

Saint Croix said...

Another path would be to recognize Israel and its right to exist. That might also bring peace and stability to the region.

"Two police officers who defended the Capitol during the Jan. 6, 2021 attack filed a federal civil lawsuit, asking a judge to order the hanging of a plaque to honor police heroes who protected the Capitol, lawmakers and staff from rioters.

The lawsuit cites a 2022 law signed by President Biden that required the honorary plaque be hung by March 2023. The plaque has been completed and in storage since at least last year, but GOP House Speaker Mike Johnson has not committed to installing it at the Capitol."

"The finished plaque, as seen in the poster replica, does not list individual officers, but instead features the names of law enforcement agencies. It bears an image of the west side of the Capitol with the words:

“On behalf of a grateful Congress, this plaque honors the extraordinary individuals who bravely protected and defended this symbol of democracy on January 6, 2021. Their heroism will never be forgotten.”

Pretty much impossible to take off without according to this guy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7EZkungFEE&t=819s He's a 777 pilot and has a youtube account where he analyzes airplane crashes. The 787 (and 777) have audible and visual warnings if the aircraft is not properly configured for takeoff. No bird strike issue as you would see evidence of fire/sparks and for sure smoke from the engines. He thinks the pilot not flying accidently retracted the flaps instead of the landing gear, why the gear stayed down long after they should have been retracted. Also the composite wings of the 787 bend up from the lift, theirs stayed flat. So loss of lift from the accidental flap retraction and continued drag from the gear being down ultimately resulted a power on stall.
