“American warplanes dropped bombs on three nuclear sites in Iran on Saturday, President Trump announced on Saturday night, bringing the U.S. military directly into the war after days of uncertainty about whether he would intervene.”

The NYT reports.

“All planes are now outside of Iran air space,” he said in a post on social media, adding that a “full payload” of bombs had been dropped on Fordo, the heavily fortified underground facility in Iran that is critical to its nuclear program. “All planes are safely on their way home.”

I would describe this situation as symmetrical asymmetric warfare. Asymmetric war is when a country uses guerilla war or terrorism against a country whose army is too strong to fight directly. and symmetrical asymmetric war is when a country uses its strong armed forces in an asymmetric way against an asymmetric foe. If Iran arms terrorists to massacre civilians indiscriminately with rockets without declaring war, then carefully, discriminatingly shoot the generals of the Iran army units arming the terrorists without declaring war. If Iranian scientists and generals are developing nuclear weapons but not in a symmetrical arms race but in an asymmetric secret way, what rule says the only thing one can do is declare war on the Iranian people before stopping that development? Why not symmetrically be asymmetric and shoot the scientists and generals developing the weapons and blow up the weapons sites using all the power of armed forces but power focused like a laser on the asymmetric paymasters and nuclear scientists. Then, leave it at that without insisting on declaring war and attacking the Iranian people. They don't have much to say about what their country does, so why involve them?

No, I said early on that there was some evidence that masks worked, and there was, though it became plain that if that was ever true, the virus had evolved beyond it. I doubt I said that schools should be closed, beyond maybe the first couple weeks while we got our bearings on this new man-made virus designed to infect humans. What I did say was that teachers who were old enough to be at risk should probably resign, and I never said that anybody should be forced to take the jab, as it was experimental, and forcing children to take it was unconscionable, and probably nobody under 50 should take it. I said I took it because I am old enough that it was worth the risk at the time, and I knew it was a risk, and somebody had to volunteer.

I think that you are misremember things. But sure, find a link.

I have made thousands of comments here since 2016 supporting Trump. That I feel betrayed by him on this, seriously betrayed, like he is a bald-faced liar, betrayed, is beyond doubt, that the MAGA coalition is dead, is also beyond doubt. IRL I have put up with so much shit for supporting Trump, but I always said "He never started any wars," and it didn't get to me. Now I am red-faced.

Foreign policy is not my bailiwick. But observing the news is, and I was quite surprised all night by how much agreement there was across political journalists, from Fox to CNN, and their foreign equivalents, approving of this move, and now. Supports the idea that there must have been some there there, especially as Trump has risked angering his anti-foreign engagement base.

It should be noted that the Iranian FP Minister emphasized that he was immediately meeting with their ally, Putin. Puts leftists in a bit of a bind.

You misspelled "anti-endless war."

Jesus, I'm done with this subject. I need a break from this obviously, and I am sure that you guys would like to congratulate yourselves on how Trump fooled enough of us to get elected in peace.

There is a weapon nicknamed "The Rod From God". Supposedly a guided titanium rod about the size of a large telephone pole. It is dropped from orbit and hits at mach 5 or 10. No explosive but kinetic energy equal to a small nuke. It vaporizes on impact leaving no trace.

Tungsten. It's much heavier.

A friend who worked at the Pentagon denied it exists.

This was an answer to 45 years of terror attacks by Iran on Americans. Full stop. US policy has been "no nukes for Iran" over the same period. But like other official US policies to which several presidents paid lip service while doing nothing Trump is the first to give the policy actual power and carry it out. We didn't do it for or at the request of Israel. Trump had the same stated policy in his first term when Israel was not at war.

Israel has played a role obviously by taking out air defense and other Iranian defense assets and that made our efforts last night easier but we took the action to protect American lives first and foremost. It is not war. It isn't even a 30-day bombing campaign like leftist hero Obama directed at Libya in violation of the WPA. These were a targeted specific response after which Iran has a chance to de-escalate or FAFO some more.

Since the attack I have been wondering what the impact of this will be on the Atomic 'Doomsday Clock' that is kept by the 'Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists'. The last I checked, it stands at 89 seconds to midnight, the closest it's ever been. So - which way will it move? A difficult one, eh? Or, at least, difficult to find a defense for, if it moves closer. It will be interesting to see how it changes, and to see what logic is marshaled to support the change.

Democrat behavior outside of the law, and also using the law, and also hiding within the law, has removed any support for exhibitions of fake moral posturing or phony outrage coming into play. This is simply a case of sowing what you have reaped. If Trump had notified Schumer in advance of the mission, it would have been blaring out on the NYT website approximately one nanosecond later, and we all know it.

There was not any real evidence. Yes, a poorly designed self-reported observational study did make the news, but its flaws were obvious and it certainly did not fool the Cochrane reviewers.

Rusty @7:49am provides the correct answer.

Iran, along with the countries and Presidents assisting Iran, hasn't been incompliance with the NPT since 2003 and was officially recognized as noncompliant by the US in 2007. For 18 years, the best the US did to demand compliance was send pallets of cash; and then Trump, backed by the majority of Americans, said "enough". Now Iran is incompliance with the NPT.

"What's with the whole 'killing brown people' nonsense? Do you not know that the word 'Aryan' was originally used to describe the people who lived in Iran? The very NAME of the country comes from 'Aryānām,' which in Old Iranian means 'land of the Aryans.' The Iranians are as Indo-European as anyone ever."

Thank you. Technically, they are a genetic mix of Indo-Europeans and the closely related Neolithic farmers, with a few other genetic inputs. But that high level description also applies to "the original people of Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa". Which has been the US definition of "White" since the census definitions were standardized across the country (instead of more local levels) in the early 1920s. Which in turn was based on older categories from centuries earlier.

I never heard of Arabs or other people of Middle Eastern origin being called "brown" until after Bush Jr went into Iraq and some on the Left started calling them "Brown People" to try to make the war into a racial issue.

Yup. The Iranian peoples seem to have a disproportionate amount of women who are stunningly beautiful.

Inga expresses concern for Israelis regarding Iran's response with missile attacks, but none for the alternative scenario of Iran developing nukes. Sometimes adults have to make hard choices. Let Iran develop nukes, and all that implies not just for Israel but for the entire world, or eliminate that risk and suffer some casualties in the short run? Inga seems to imagine some alternative that avoids both, but she (and others here) are dreaming. Iran had its chance with diplomacy and rejected it.

The "Rod from God" thing doesn't exist (except in Neal Stephenson's Anathem) because our ability to launch something heavy enough to do massive damage without burning up on re-entry is just too high. You'd have to break the rod into something like 15 segments, lift them individually, then rendezvous in orbit and weld them together in such a way that they wouldn't separate.
All well beyond anyone's capabilities.
"Rods from God" will only work when we're regularly capturing asteroids and towing them into near-earth orbit, and even then you'd have to somehow manufacture the rod out of a metallic asteroid.
There are so many easier ways to blow things up.

Prof. M. Drout said...

My original tepid opposition to our attacking Iran was based on my fears that our military would suffer casualties in the operation and/or that we'd do the Bush thing of making the general population suffer in wishful thinking that they'd rise up and overthrow their government (kind of the Bushie version of the loathsome and idiotic Marxist "immiseration thesis," especially because the immiseration invariably happens but the pie-in-the-sky good result never comes).

This strike completely avoided the former (as an aside: Hey, Russia—it looks like your S-400 is an piece of crap. You should stick to something you're good at, like making guns out of tractor parts).
And, Trump seems to have no desire to attack the Iranian people, invade, or occupy their land.
So far, so good.

Josephbleau said...

“Yup. The Iranian peoples seem to have a disproportionate amount of women who are stunningly beautiful.“

My thesis on Scandinavian women. The Vikings went all over Europe steaming women to send back home as slaves, and they were not going to waste freight on the ugly ones. The Middle East did the same with the Circassian women, who were imported to feed the harem trade.
