"While planning the first major overseas trip of his second term, a four-day swing through Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates..."

"... Mr. Trump told his advisers that he wanted to announce deals that would be worth more than $1 trillion. As a branding exercise it makes perfect sense. Surrounded by resource-rich royals and American business executives, Mr. Trump, who likes to brag about his deal-making skills, will scrawl his Sharpie over term sheets, and lots of them. He will visit palaces, walk on red carpets and be treated like a king in a region that is increasingly vital to the Trump family’s financial interests. Yet as a strategic exercise, the trip’s purpose remains foggy...."

From "Trump Heads to the Middle East With a Single Goal: Deals, Deals, Deals/President Trump has always viewed the presidency as a worldwide hunt for deals. And there is no better place for that than the Gulf, where a few men wield absolute authority over vast wealth" (NYT).

Ah yes, few outside Trump's family even care about the Middle East and South Asia! Nothing happens there. Ever. There's no geopolitical significance to any countries located in the region. It's simply a personal curiosity of President Trump that he wanders over to the region to see about new locations on which to slap the golden TRUMP name. Just like he spent his first term doing nothing but working tirelessly on behalf of Trump Inc.

NOT!

There may never be enough contempt in me to give the NYT the level of hatred they deserve. Good luck in your framing, "foggy" as it is, Times.

So now, the next phase continues. And while the NYT tries to figure things out, the Trump team is working on further isolating Iran by consolidating those with money and power around them.

Donald Trump defends gift of 747 jet from Qatar as new Air Force One ~ Forbes

‘Gulf state’s offer to replace aging presidential plane raises ethics concerns’

Donald Trump:

How it started: "I could "shoot somebody and I wouldn't lose any voters."

How's it going: "I can take a $400 million bribe in broad daylight, and I won't lose any voters ."

Re: Air force One

Well, to start with, you'd need to take apart every single rivet and bolt to check for bugs. But, more importantly, it's not a lack of a hull that has caused delays with a new Air Force One. It's the avionics and control systems. And that can't simply be sped up because there is a new hull. And also, this isn't a new hull! This is an old hull. So using this frame to make a new Air Force One is only going to take more time and money than a new built frame would cost.

Not only bolts and rivets, it’s the software that would need checking, and there is no way they can go over every single line of code and all other hidden payload.

Although an administration that uses Signal and personal mobile phones to discuss attack plans may simply not care.

This will never fly as Air Force One but, as the article suggests, it will pass to the Trump ‘Presidential Library’ after his term of office. Basically, it’ll replace his aging private 757.

Drago said...

Mike (MJB Wolf): "Pretty sure AF1 is an asset of the Air Force and designated as the plane for any present and future POTUS, even after Trump, but that just my MAGA-influenced spin on the facts at hand."

- Its a gift to the Dept Of Defense/Air Force. Legal.

- Will be refurbished by L3Harris, 6th largest defense contractor and experts at communications. Appropriate.

- Will be used instead of the current "ancient" 747's that moron DD Drivers pals at Boeing cant deliver without a decade of delay and billions in cost over runs.

- Safer and more effective for POTUS, no doubt that drives retard DD Driver insane.

- After being used it will be transferred to the Trump library (legal and precedented: see AF1 707 transferred to Reagan library)

- Aircraft will be "owned" and controlled by NARA, not Trump, as every non-retard knows (which excludes DD Driver, naturally).

- If the aicraft is ever de-mothballed it will be for the use by whomever is President at that time, not Trump nor his family.

But I credit Trump for once again cutting thru DD Driver's beloved incompetent bureaucracy and delivering a good deal for the American people while adhering to well established law and existing precedents.

Not directly related to the NYT article, but Trumps EO on Pharmaceutical pricing is fascinating/terrifying/exciting. Let me explain, as I know pharma some.

U.S. Drug Pricing is make believe. It's not rooted in reality, and it makes no sense. To understand where it is today, you need to first realize that the system is setup so that the U.S. MUST have the highest drug pricing. Further, that drug pricing MUST have rebates/kickbacks/heavy discounting room built into it for Insurance companies, PBMs, Pharmacies, Government, and more. That way, each of those can declare "wins" when they get something.

Then most other countries negotiate DOWN from the lowest prices the U.S. is paying.

This is not a single company driving this, this is a broken system that has grown into place over the course of generations.

Now, the terrifying part is what Trump is doing which will break things. It will break Pharma investment, at which the U.S. is the best in the world at innovating. Our broken system actually yields the fastest and best new drug developments than any other country/region (albeit at enormous cost).

At the same time, Pharma/Drug pricing is BROKEN and has been for years. And if you view Trump's moves as an opening gambit to renegotiate a status quo through force, then this is a good first move.

Trump is clearly the most consequential person on the planet. He does more deals around the world last week than Biden did in 4 years. Under Biden nothing good ever got done, because doing whatever, the process, was the real goal. Why is it taking so long to finish AF1? Because the Biden Admin was running the contract, and Boeing was in on the graft. Then Trump comes back, and Bam!

The Dems are continuing to melt down, because Trump isn’t playing their game - which is to get very rich via the process of governing. Trump really believes in MAGA. Internationally, he is doing three important things. First, he is taking the money away from China that they have been using to build modern weapons that they are using to threaten their neighbors, and us. They have an export economy, the tariffs would kill that. And domestically, they can’t afford the unrest that is starting to cause. Working with China, is Iran, which is the driver for almost all of the violence in the Middle East. They are rapidly being isolated and put under financial pressure, for similar reasons - they too face mass internal violence if they don’t back off. And, finally, the Russian/Ukrainian war is idiotic. Both countries are bankrupting themselves, and killing hundreds of thousands of their peoples, for what? So the Dems and leftist leaders in Europe, can continue to benefit financially from the war. With all three of these issues, Biden and the Dems were happy to keep taking the bribe money, and let them fester. That they aren’t intractable problems is evidenced by what Trump has done in less than four months.

As I see it, you have it partially right. As I said above, for the Dems, the process is the goal, because that is where they make their money. And Boeing was in on the graft. The longer they strung out the reconfiguration of the 747s, the more money they, and the Dems, would make. The real goal, under Biden, was not to get new AF1s, but to make money off the process. Biden himself didn’t care - he mostly just used the planes to fly back and forth between Andrews, outside DC, and Delaware. Trump does care, because he is always in motion. My thoughts are that they should just keep all three AF1s, throughout his term, just because of the mileage and landings he is putting them through.

This is one of those cases of Trump taking public corruption to new lows.

If Trump was actually able to broker an enduring peace in the region that respected human rights, saved lives, and hobbled Israel's expansionist aims permanently (along with its influence in the U.S.), I would find it much easier for Trump to take a "commission/percentage" for his trouble.

Unfortunately, as with most things Trump does, there are ample reasons to be skeptical about just how substantive and beneficial his agreements are likely to be. Is Trump negotiating a deal that represents some broader public interest, or is this another one of those cases of Trump acting for himself and his cronies in a way that only benefits himself and his cronies?

Kakistocracy said...

In 2017, it seems highly likely that Trump allowed Jared Kushner to shake down the Qatari's to bail them out of a bad real estate investment (666 5th Ave, NYC) in a deal that was worth hundreds of millions. This is how Trump and his people operate. Some of this is probably just a matter of "carrots" and "sticks". There are things Trump can do to reward and hurt the Qataris as president.

In fairness to the Qataris this issue isn't exclusive to them. This is pretty much how Trump operates across the board. Trump has done a lot of shady stuff domestically, with Israelis, Saudis, Emiratis, Turks, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc.

Achilles: "If you look at October 7th from space there are no real good explanations"

Come on mate, it's the oldest explanation for military failure: perfect preparation...for the last war.

The Israelis knew there wasn't going to be a conventional attack from that direction, since they are at peace with egypt, and Hamas has no tanks. So they were geared up for missile attacks and terrorist infiltration. They use Iron Dome and shelters for the missiles, and TSA on steroids to inspect every Pali coming in to work. Then they added unarmed female draftees watching remote cameras as an economy of force measure. No reaction force, because what reaction force do you need for one dude who smuggled a knife or bomb thru the checkpoint? You can do like Hitler and send a policeman to arrest him.

So Hamas figured out that they could do a low tech conventional attack: bulldozers to breach the fence, hang gliders for air assault, dirt bikes for cavalry, and missiles to make sure everyone was in their bunkers instead of out looking for G's.

Kind of like how the Egyptians figured out they could just use Cairo Fire Department boats to breach the Suez Canal berms with their hoses.

True, the IDF high command ignored the border girls' reports of military age males amassing in Gaza, but it takes a lot to get a general to realize he's in a new war. Malice is unnecessary to explain it.

I'm not sure why Trump awarded Boeing the contract to build the F47 fighter jet. The development costs are expected to be $20 billion with final build costs in the hundreds of billions. If Boeing can't build 2 air force 1 planes. why would they complete a multi-aircraft contract on time and up to the high quality standards of the military.

When I was working, we did business with Boeing, St. Louis which was the Defense arm of Boeing. Maybe they will be responsible for building the F47s. Maybe they have their stuff together.

"Free jets from the Muslim oligarchs" is 100% in the same basket as Hunter's "artwork" and Nancy's investments."
Shhhhh. Hush, now. The airplane is being transferred to the United States military. They are going to contract to have it converted to AF1.
Now go and search the web for something else to be outraged about.
