"Think I'm going to be sitting on a waiting line, at United, waiting...?

I know. He sounds entitled. I see that being mocked at Instapundit — "FIGHTING THE OLIGARCHY LOOKS A LITTLE… OLIGARCHIC" — but I just want to join the pile on so I can comment on the language: "sitting on a waiting line, at United, waiting."

1. There's no sitting. One stands in line.

2. A line's a line. It's not a "waiting line." Is there some other line that could be relevant to this discussion? I know there's line dancing. For the annals of Things I Asked Grok: "When can people be in a line that is not for the purpose of waiting?" There are a few things — military formations, dance formations, games, team-building exercises, protests, picket lines, posing for photographs, walking on a narrow trail — but none of these other possibilities make Sanders's use of "waiting line" sound idiomatic. People say "I was waiting in line" — or, in New York, "waiting on line" — but not "I was in a waiting line" — and "I was sitting on a waiting line" is, to my ear, weird, as if dealing with lines is so alien to Sanders that he can't call to mind the words ordinary people use.

3. There's that extra "waiting." He tells us what he'd be doing while "sitting on a waiting line": He he'd be waiting. The repetition of the word "waiting" suggests that he feels it has an immense power.

4. In context, however, he makes perfect sense. Play the clip. He's talking about getting to events where 30,000 people are waiting for him. Any delay for him should be multiplied by 30,000. An extra hour in the airport for me or you is only one lost hour. But for Bernie, it's 30,000 human hours lost.

A blast from 1985 showing the hypocritical Bernie “l need three house” Sanders:
"You know, it's funny, sometimes American journalists talk about how bad a country is because people are lining up for food," Sanders said. "That's a good thing. In other countries people don't line up for food. The rich get the food, and the poor starve to death."
Lines for the average citizens, no lines for the oligarch.

Yea - capitalism is like the Cops. Easy to hate on it until you need it.

But if I’m getting this right, he had to fly private to be in multiple states so he could spread a message that’s demonizes others who fly private. He flies private, in order to restrict other peoples ability to fly private. It’s always OTHER people who are greedy…how convenient.

Or he could schedule events so that there are not 30,000 people waiting for him to board a plane elsewhere to fly to where they are waiting - you know, get there the night before or something. Particularly when he is not up for reelection until 2030.

@Althouse, so is there some reason why he cannot plan ahead and put some slack into his schedule to allow for the possibility of delays? Besides the obvious fact that he’s a dim lightbulb, I mean.

What Kate said (evergreen statement). TSA was the longest queue for my recent travel. Also, I believe the airlines refer to the line to board the aircraft as the boarding line. Some may call it a embarkation line for a sense of adventure.

The old Bernie of 2016 would have used the waiting in line for hours to get even more exposure for his cause. Imagine the viral videos that would proliferate if Bernie flew coach to his Eat the Rich rallies! He doesn't quite care as much as he used to.

There's no sitting. One stands in line.

Back in the days of my youth, I remember going with some friends to buy tickets for a concert. The box office opened at 9. We got there before 6, and there was already an orderly line of people there who had camped out the night before. Some were still sleeping in tents. Others were sitting on folding chairs. We went to the end of the line, sat on the ground and played euchre for the next couple of hours. Almost nobody was standing. If we weren’t waiting in line, what were we doing?

Ironic that a self proclaimed socialist doesn’t like to stand in line since that’s what people do in socialist countries. It’s just for food, gas, and medical attention—not flights on United.

*
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) in 1985 praised countries where people "line up for food," calling breadlines a "good thing."

The video of Sanders, then the mayor of Burlington, Vermont, resurfaced on Tuesday after the senator announced that he is running for president in 2020. In the interview from the mid-80s, Sanders was asked about breadlines in Nicaragua and his support for the socialist Sandinistas who ruled the country at the time.

"You know, it's funny, sometimes American journalists talk about how bad a country is because people are lining up for food," Sanders said. "That's a good thing. In other countries people don't line up for food. The rich get the food, and the poor starve to death."

Leland: remember Pascual Perez, the baseball player who forgot to get off the perimeter highway and circled Atlanta several times looking for the stadium before missing the start of the game? After that, they called him Perimeter Perez. He isn't much missed. Nor will be Bernie, the limousine Marxist with a freakish, musty, obsession with menstruation. He's the Robert Crumb of politics, if Robert Crumb had been an asshole.

Hassayamper said...

We have long experience with such things, and we know this man is full of shit.

The best example is from the aftermath of World War II. Under the thumb of the Labour scum and filth, England continued rationing and price controls on food and fuel well into the 1950's, causing much suffering among its population.

West Germany, starting from an even lower baseline with much more wartime destruction, removed all price regulations and rationing on even basic foodstuffs in 1947 or so, and the shelves of every grocery were groaning with abundant food within six months.

Socialism kills. Socialism destroys. Socialists are ontologically evil enemies of all humanity. They should be treated just like Nazis and communists, starting with excising them from all classrooms, government bodies, and other positions of trust and influence.

Agree with other poster. Manage your schedule better and waiting in line is not an issue. This also explains why TSA remains terrible and pointless, but it never changes--because the Important People never wait on TSA anyway. Finally, why is Bernie travelling to multiple states to do speaking engagements? Doesn't he have a job? As a senator, representing Vermont? Do your job in DC or do your job in Vermont. I don't think either one entails speaking to big crowds in other states.

“There's no sitting. One stands in line.”

Yes, you stand in the TSA line, but there is sitting on a plane on a taxiway and sitting in.a waiting area at the gate.

I think that Bernie’s thought process evolved mid-sentence from “sitting on” a plane, which isn’t the best wording for the point he is trying to make, to standing in “line”, which would have sounded in elitism, to sitting in a “waiting” area. That mashup of thoughts came out as “sitting on a waiting line”.

As to why Bernie threw “waiting” in again, he may have wanted to shift the imagery away from sitting to waiting because that picture of Bernie Sanders with mask and mittens at Joe Biden’s inauguration is the most famous sitting meme of all internet time.
