The Presidents go head-to-head in my "For you" feed on X.

Obama, perhaps representing the Democratic Party, sticks to a minimalist position: Republicans might take some of your money. Trump is effusive, lists a lot of things that will benefit some of us, and ends with an exciting but vague and weird attack on Democrats: They've lost control of themselves! They are aimlessly wandering around! They've got no grit! They are warped in the past! They think they're going to bring their insane policies back, but it's never going to happen! Meanwhile, Obama merely wafts anxiety about health insurance coverage.

That tax on Social Security, of course, signed into law by Ronald Reagan.

FormerLawClerk said...

And that tax on Social Security was written in the Senate and sponsored by Bob Dole, Republican.

They're both sticking to script--Obama with the usual Democratic fearmongering about Republican's pushing grandma off a cliff, while Trump declares everything big and beautiful.

Note though, that everything Trump touted is a cost; he didn't have anything to say about cuts (of which there weren't nearly enough).

Speaking of insurance is a cop out. Let's see if Trump can resolve the 40 trillion dollar deficit therein, and address health, not medical care. That said, Obama is living in a mansion by the rising waters at the seashore. Climate change is good, others say it is a kleptocratic Ka-catastrophe.

FormerLawClerk said...

Speaking of rising waters ... have any more dead bodies washed up on Barack Obama's Martha's Vineyard lawn lately?

If debt, supply, and production do not matter, then taxation has an ulterior motive.

I distinctly recall how the bill that completely screwed my healthcare insurance coverage and everybody else's, at great cost to consumers and physicians, and to the great enrichment of insurance companies, was "pushed through" back in 2010. I remember who pushed it, and who it is named for.
I'm still waiting for my $2500.

No Medicaid coverage for gender-affirming care for adults. That seems discriminatory to me...

Trump is trying to deflect from the fact that if the bill goes down it will likely be because of Republicans.

Warped in the past? hm.

Obamacares merely shared responsibility a la progressive prices. This why sustainable labor and environmental arbitrage is critical to the viability (pun intended) of progressive principals... principles prosecuted through liberal license.

Trump - 1
Obama - 0

Trump smartly weaved in some social issues that are 80/20 in his favor. The guy from Queens rhetorically destroyed the Harvard Law guy.

Tim Maguire is correct--neither of them talk about anybody paying for any of this. It's all "Federal funding" which of course simply exists for Presidents and Congress to distribute to us peasants.

FIFY, Althouse. And you must have missed the attacks on cabinet officers by the likes of senators Tim Kaine, Chris Van Hollen, and Sheldon Whitehouse, among others, to not grasp how accurate the charge that they’ve lost control of themselves is.

Obama as ALL of the democrats and media call out vague “cuts” with absolutely no discussion of what those cuts are. There ARE NO BENEFIT CUTS. This is the same crap democrats pull out for decades. Any slowdown in growth is a “CUT”. The one thing learned over the last 4 years is that there isn’t a single Democrat or Democrat media outlet that doesn’t lie to your face. Not one.

Still thinking of that doctor I could keep if I liked my doctor.....

As Obama reminds us, it's the Progressive Democrats that 'Give', and the Republicans that 'Take Away'. But they both can take credit for the $37 Trillion debt that neither of them like to refer to. As for Trump, it's called a 'weave warp'.

Also: Ms Althouse, please check your spam folder, I have suspicions......

Isn't it the case that the "people will lose Medicaid" thing refers to a work requirement for the able-bodied? My understanding is that that one thing is crushing the Medicaid budget. Am I wrong?

Big Mike said...

Obama with the usual Democratic fearmongering about Republican's pushing grandma off a cliff

@tim maguire, let’s not forget that during the pandemic Democrat governors like Andrew Cuomo and Gretchen Whitmer deliberately forced grandma’s nursing home to accept COVID-19 patients into the facility, so we shouldn’t ignore the fact that it’s Democrats that actually killed grandma.

Aaron said...

What Obama is "worried" about is the requirement for Medicaid users age 18-65 who are not disabled to work 20 hours per week.

Doesn't have to be for pay. You can also volunteer.

Is that really too much to ask?

So its only a cut if they refuse to work.

Ambrose said...

I am struck by two things. One - that Obama, 8 years out of office is the Demcrats' spokesman here. They really have no one else. Two - the rhetoric is from the FDR New Deal era. "We Democrats will give you more goodies from the treasury than the Republicans will." They really have nothing else.

No, "warped in the past" is exactly right, Dems entire platform is like an unpopular 45 record, thrown out along the train tracks by the radio station at the edge of town, warping in the sweet Sunshine of free thinking and free speech, leaving the police-state-loving ObamaNation to shrivel as the trash that it is. (They've put Kamala into training now to be able to speak without drinking any wine, snort).

It's hilarious and dare I say "Great".

If the ObamaNation had succeeded, this conversation on X between 2 Presidents would have never been able to exist: jan 6, 2021, Facebook and Twitter obediently silenced the sitting, elected President of the United States of America 2 weeks before he was going to be leaving office, and were staffed to police us all. By now, Banks & PayPal would have long ago pulled my family's ability to get our funds, because we expressed Wrong-think too often.
Year Zero would have retroactively been claimed for 2009, a new calendar & civilization begun, 40 to 400 years of darkness, the ObamaNation.

GlennR once said "leftism always leads in the direction of Pol Pot."
we are now heading UP, instead of Down. Praise Be.

We should not forget that the entire PURPOSE of ObamaCare was to destroy all private insurance, clearing the way for "single-payer" insurance, or "national health insurance like Canada". That last phrase *ought* to have been a huge Red Flag, because Canada has no "national" system -- it varies vastly from province to province. The only thing "universal" about it is that it's universally terrible.

Two vignettes, in comparison.

Yesterday, my informal fiancée in Québec (where I lived for 15 years) was whooping with delight because after 5 *years* she was finally allowed by the mandatory lottery to have access to random basic doctors in a "clinic". These are the only way you can be referred to any sort of specialist, and she has an auto-immune disease which also attacks her eyes. Two years ago, after 24 hr in the ER a hospital doc called in a specialist colleague who (at some risk) gave her a renewable prescription which has held the disease in check. Otherwise, she would now be blind and unable to stand or walk.

Compare with my kid sister, who in March decided that the osteoarthritis in one hip was becoming a serious hindrance to normal life. She contacted an orthopædic practice -- no referral needed -- who ran key tests, then sent the results to an independent practice for a second evaluation. They agreed on the diagnosis and recommended a surgeon specialising in women's hips. He ordered the usual array of pre-surgical tests, and when they came back fine booked her for surgery 10 days later.

Using the newest ceramic technology and minimally invasive techniques -- well, for hip-replacement, at least -- it was an outpatient procedure at a regional surgery centre ... and she was home in time for supper. Total out-of-pocket ? One hundred bucks flat administrative fee for the surgery centre ad 20 percent co-pay for the post-op meds.

Standard wait for a hip-job in Québec ? Almost 7 years, and they offer government "assisted" suicide as an option if the wait is too arduous.

And there's this:

"California Gov. Gavin Newsom slammed congressional proposals that would, among other things, cut Medicaid funding to states that provide taxpayer-financed non-emergency health care to illegal immigrants."

California is apparently at risk of losing $40B in federal Medicare dollars because of i) the illegal alien provision, ii) the able-bodied work requirement, and iii) the elimination of a scheme that lets CA overcharge the feds.

Gee, Gavin, I can't imagine what you could do to address this…

Skeptical Voter said...

Ah the Obama mist of fear mongering--sprayed through an atomizer bottle like Chanel #5--but it smells more of a Democrat reservation cattle feed lot. If you have driven by Harris Ranch on I-5 in California you'll recognize the smell.

This is where Barrack learns what happens when you fight Trump on a 70/30 issue.

Democrats used to get away with it because they had media control. But now with X even good little Barry is about to learn what the country actually thinks about him.

Warped or warping is a sailing term. It is interchangeable with the terms kedge, kedged or kedging. This is for when there is no wind or or the wind is blowing from the wrong direction. The ancho is taken out to a point away from where you are, dropped, set (jauled) and then hauled in by the of the capstan and incrementally moving your vessel to a place where it can take advantage of the wind.

As Presidents go, there is Trump and then there are the rest. He is like no other for better or worse. Most seem to make sense in a linear transition of pendulum swings big and small, but the builder sees a wrecking ball as necessary before rebuilding. Closest would be FDR.

Interesting word, and good info from Aztec the Heartless. A very cumbersome and desperate way to move -- lots of effort and very little result. Add it to the list of nautical terms now used in common non-maritime ways, with shifted meanings over time. Grok summary says "Trump’s usage seems more aligned with the modern, figurative sense of being stuck or distorted rather than a direct nautical reference."

Medicaid is where significant fraud takes place. It should only be made available to those UNABLE to work… e.g., the disabled. These Democrats have ALWAYS been all about growing the size and scope of government.

Any politician, whatever the political party, who is not on board with the need for serious reform lacks a sober understanding of the situation.

They only start piping up about fiscal responsibility when the status quo is under threat.

"That tax on Social Security, of course, signed into law by Ronald Reagan."
Half of it became taxable for people with significant other income. Clinton raised it to 85% in '93. It's annoying, but I think it's also a good idea, so retired people have an incentive to keep middle-income tax rates low, since they tend to vote more than young people. They got rid of the old income caps that made you lose benefits if you earned much in your late 60s--those were ridiculous.
