"The book has also amplified debate about whether more blame should be placed on Democratic leaders, Mr. Biden’s staff and the press for not revealing more about the former president earlier...."

"Intentionally or not, by being an author of a major book on the subject, Mr. Tapper has allowed himself to become a symbol of the establishment press that conservatives have long accused of hiding the former president’s frailty from the public. [Megyn] Kelly, the former Fox News star, subjected Mr. Tapper to intense grilling on her popular podcast in an interview that went viral online. 'You covered the Biden presidency aggressively throughout the four years, and you didn’t cover mental acuity, hardly at all,' Ms. Kelly said at one point. 'I mean, time and time again when issues came up, you seem to be running cover for the president.' Mr. Tapper denied the charges. 'Conservative media absolutely has every right to say, "We were hip to this, and the legacy media was not,"' he said later in the interview. 'Now, I do not accept that I was part of a cover-up. I do not accept that I was just providing cover for Joe Biden.'"

From "Everyone Now Has an Opinion on Jake Tapper/A book the CNN host co-wrote has received positive reviews and appears to be a sales hit. But it has also generated intense scrutiny of him and his work" (NYT).

So... you weren't "hip to this."

Why not? And why would I read a book written by such an out-of-touch, unobservant, slow learner? Or should I ask why would I read a book written by such a liar?

A perfect example why the MSM should not be trusted to tell the truth about anything. Ever.

Jake Tapper is still covering it up by hiding the identities of the people in the administration who helped cover it, aka, "anonymous sources".

But the real problem is that even regular people were noticing Joe Biden's obvious cognitive decline as far back as 2019 but Jake Tapper, whose job it is to report on exactly this type of stuff, evidently didn't notice it. He was "fooled". Or, he noticed it, but didn't report on it because he thought it would help Trump.

Either way, he's no journalist. He's either too dumb to be a reporter or a partisan hack and he should be run out of his profession if there's anyone left in it with an ounce of integrity.

I still wonder what really happened to Jake Tapper. I never thought he was particularly a conservative, but I did see him as a traditionalist, especially when it came to journalistically playing it straight. It's hard to believe now, but he used to be a regular guest on Dennis Miller's radio show and podcasts. I used to enjoy Tapper's candid takes on politics and journalism. It's almost like a different person inhabits his body now.

@Althouse, you could and you should, and I think you just did. But it’s worth going through the book to see the people from Biden’s inner circle that Tapper names — and perhaps more importantly, who in Biden’s inner circle he implicitly absolves by not naming their names. Because it’s the people in that latter group that are likely to be the real puppet masters these past four years. And it wouldn’t surprise me to eventually find out that they had puppet masters of their own.

Tapper and almost all of his colleagues in legacy/corporate media are useless at best. Another luminary in this category is Joe Scarborough, who was grilled with a bit less spiciness by his friend Mark Halperin (whose 2Way platform I highly recommend. And for those who haven't seen it, Halperin has been merciless in his condemnation of how major media covered this). Scarborough simply would not concede that he did anything wrong in his infamous "he's at the top of his game" comments about Biden, basically saying aw shucks I was mistaken. It is a marvel of the ages.

There are two options with these people. They are either morons or liars. I'd bet a bit more on Joe being a moron than Tapper, but either way I will never believe anything coming out of the mouth of these clowns ever again.

On the leftist side, you have ABC, CBS, MSNBC, NBC, NPR, PBS, and almost every newspaper in the country. Nominally, on the conservative side, there's Fox (whom many conservatives have some to distrust), Newsmax, and a few others. Overwhelmingly, we already have almost nothing but a liberal press.

What I have noticed, both here on this blog, and IRL, is that suddenly no Democrat ever liked Joe Biden. I am constantly told that I should be ashamed of myself for perseverating on this issue when it is in the past, and I guess, that we should just forget it ever happened and trust the media fully in the future!

It's about guilty. Democrats sort of knew that Biden was an utter creep, not just a pedophile, not just corrupt, but a monger of mass murder, a proponent of war, but this makes them feel guilty for going along. How do you manage guilt? By denial! "I don't support war!" so it can't be true that I supported war by supporting Biden, etc, etc...

Jaq said...

"Why does anyone read a book about current events they just lived through themselves?"

Yes! Don't read it! Whatever you do, Do. Not. Read!

Why should we open the black box when we know that the plane has crashed and all aboard are dead?

Maybe because at the time we were living through it, the press was lying to us every time their lips moved, and just maybe, we should examine how this happened and make adjustments to whom we believe, and whom we don't.

Ah, but there's the rub. We must not lose our trust in a media machine that the Democrats control! That would be bad for our side! So, I repeat: Do. Not. Read! Do. Not. Discuss!

Most of us saw the Biden decline long before the disastrous debate with Trump. We pointed it out but the media said we were lying with a new concept called cheap fakes. Tapper shamed Lara Trump for being insensitive to his supposed history of stuttering.

As Forrest Gump would say, "And then, all of a sudden, Jake Tapper complained they lied to him."

Jaq said...

Thought stopping cliché. I know you mean it humorously, but using clichés to stop people from going down certain roads of inquiry is as old as cults.

Yeah, Joe not gonna be respected and fawned over by the left like their idols Obama, Bill/Hillary Clinton, Pelosi, Schumer etc.
No million dollar speeches. Few talk show invites. His biggest event will unfortunately be his funeral.
Instead of standing up for their idol, the left is abandoning Joe and his family.
Jill will represent for a year or so, if even that, then it's going to be "worse than Jimmy Carter" forevermore.

Still believe Joe's handlers messed with his drugs. Seems like it was planned, as MSM was primed and ready to agree the debate was a disaster and Joe was senile.
No attempt at all to spin it at all, not even from MSNBC

From what I understand of the press release from Joe's doctors where they said the cancer is "incurable," I don't expect that he will be around by Christmas, but I am not a doctor. However; I think that other Democrats have very little to fear from scapegoating him for stuff that they were all complicit in. Just as every Democrat leaning commenter here who defended Joe Biden is complicit, and prefers that we all just "move on." Where is "moveon.org" when you need it?

Calls for consensus and unity almost always come from people who aim for centralization of control. This time is no different.

Our country was always meant to have red states and blue states. To each their own.

The only thing the Federal Government should be doing here is protecting our borders and some other limited guardrails like ensuring equal rights.

Racist institutions like Harvard, leaders of sanctuary cities, and violent protestors should be suppressed. Political murderers publicly executed and their associates jailed.

Outside that kind of thing be wary of those calling for unity.

No. They were not cowards.

They installed a puppet through an illegitimate election, they hid their puppet's infirmity, they stole Trillions of dollars from taxpayers, and they tried to implement a fascist regime using censorship and widespread political violence trying to jail their political opponents.

They didn't make stupid decisions. They made evil decisions and there are at least a thousand people in DC that need to be publicly executed and made an example for generations in 6th grade history classes so this doesn't happen for a while.

Since Tapper was either
___ (a) Too stupid to know what wqs going on with Biden
___ (b) Too in-the-tank to the democratic cause to acknowledge and report what was actually going on with Biden
___ (c) All of the above
why should anyone with any sense at all read one word of it, much less buy his damn book.

The fact that he has any credibility at all in any public forum whatsoever is proof that Barnum was right: "There is [indeed] a sucker born every minute."

Lazarus said...

Don't buy his book (not even through the magic Althouse portal), but reading it could provide details about just who was in charge during the Biden years.

With all of the anonymous sources, though, it's a little like a redacted government document where everything is blacked out.

It's astounding that Tapper or his cowriter had all these wonderful sources, but for 4 years they asked nothing and were told nothing.

Been “fun” to see Tapper’s message change and his career take a turn. He miscalculated the effect of his MK appearance (and by the way the conversation barely included his co-author, Thompson).

The answer: No one buys the book. It's merely a disguised backdoor payout to Tapper from his masters, as a reward for doing the job he was commanded to do. But, to get the money he still has to trot himself out like Astrid's pet horse and submit to this humiliation ritual. Hope it was worth it.

Too many journalists toe the line in order to retain ‘access’. It’s happening with the current administration as well. This is an egregious error on the part of mainstream news media journalists who claim to be objective. Rather than reporting what their own eyes & ears record, they take the party line and don’t verify. It’s lazy and is one of the key reasons consumers go elsewhere for news.

The Democratic Party got arm wrestled by a 300 year old chief executive. And the Republican Party got taken over by a guy who is orange. This is the fail.

Don’t blame the old for being old or the orange for being orange. We have seen the enemy, and he is us.

Well, Kaki. We had a binary choice. Just because you chose Biden doesn't mean that there were a lot of people who could see that Biden was an utterly corrupt war monger, and that Trump does not seem to be corrupt, and he believes in peace. I don't know what "orange" has to do with this.

I have said many times that if the Democrats had come up with any other candidate than Hillary, I would never have voted for Trump. I threw up in my mouth a little when I did it, but you know what? Trump is the only person running who gives a rip about the interests of the people of this country, as opposed to the crony capitalists who have taken over the Democratic Party, and who recently lost control of the Republican Party.
