Was today still Biden's stock market?

Getting back to the stock market levels Trump inherited on January 20th is cheered? So what everyone is really celebrating is a lack of deeper financial pain. Truly a dysfunctional relationship. Will the gaslighting ever end?

Podcast to recommend: Sold A Story. It's about the extensive adoption of whole-language reading instruction, also called cueing strategies, reading recovery, some other stuff, even though research at the time of its adoption had already demonstrated conclusively that phonics and decoding are the tools good readers use (and the strategies used in whole language are the strategies poor readers use to cope).

I've said before that a lot of policy of the left appears to be a cargo cult - create the appearance of the thing you want and the thing you want will magically result. This appears to be another example. Columbia School of Education postgrads liked the idea of cute children curled up in beanbags with books, absorbed in reading, and somehow thought if they just put books and beanbags in classrooms, reading would happen. I asked my kids what they remembered about their early reading instruction (because I, like many parents, just assumed that you send your kids to any old school and they'll come out reading - and they did, except that they have never enjoyed it and I always have). Sure enough, they were taught to try to guess a word that would make sense, check by looking at the pictures, and check the first letter to see if the guess still made sense. An occasional nod to phonics but only as a last resort.

I feel very angry about it all.

The grade school my daughter attended almost 40 years ago started that "whole language" instruction. A few years later we moved to my home town and the local school still used the "old fashioned" way. She had to catch up! She was behind! To this day I'm glad we moved when we did.

Bessent:“We had an excellent trade agreement with China — and the Biden Administration chose not to enforce it,” he said. “The Chinese delegation basically told us that once President Biden came into office, they just ignored their obligations.”

How much of this would even be necessary if Biden had just done his fucking job? But that would have reduced his 10%, wouldn't it.

Silly Socialite and Aged Madame of the Deep State Whorehouse Sally Quinn Whines That Liberals Don't Feel "Safe" or Social in Trump's DC

Rich, you idiot, the S&P 500 was at about 5700 on the eve of the election. It jumped on Trump's victory. The market Trump "inherited" on January 20th was already Trump's market. Nothing Biden did contributed to its rise between November 4th and January 20th. It's higher today than it was on November 4th. So maybe you should move to another topic.

Gilbar: You are mixing up Sally Quinn the Wapo writer with her mother, Sara Bette Williams, who was known for her cooking and entertaining, making her a prominent figure in Washington, D.C. social circles. Bette died in 2008.

Sally was the third wife of former Wapo Executive Editor Ben Bradlee who was famously in charge when Watergate and The Pentagon Papers hit the fan.

My stocks went through the roof higher than they were even before the minor tariffs corrections. Remember all the times Rich/Kak/Dinky/sockpuppet and Gadfly would gaslight us and bloviate that it will never happen under Trump? I suspect tonight they will be too busy continuing eating glue paste while crying on their darkweb server, mourning the death of USAID and LiveJournal to notice. Of course the damage that Bidenflation possess still affects those dumb enough to invest in tanking ESG stocks (my Home Depot stocks have been rising and doubled a for the last 10 months after they ditched DEI).

Then there is Disney which has been the worst stock to evwr own as they are intent on digging their own grave.

Kak, I own a stock, in my 401K. When the price of that stock rises, I do, in fact, experience a certain feeling of satisfaction. But all that signifies is that, should I choose to liquidate my stock today, I will get more than I would have gotten yesterday. And that is only true because someone else has decided that, while he wishes he had bought it yesterday, when it was cheaper, he has hopes that some other fool will pay even more tomorrow. As well he may.

The heQatari plane story is crazy. It would cost a fortune to convert the Palace 747 to use as air force one and we've heard no explanation as to how that can be done on a reasonable timetable by defense contractor L3Harris when the two being modified by manufacturer Boeing have been taking so long. And why wouldn't the Pentagon keep it when done? The original plan was to transfer it directly to Trump's library "foundation", but that was nixed after legal analysis. Now the talk is of "loaning" it to the Pentagon for the rest of this term. It should remain in government service until museum retirement as with the 707 at the Reagan library. Trump has already denied he plans to fly it after leaving office. Once he finds out he will be held to that statement and the realistic cost incurred by the US taxpayers, should lose interest altogether. Or else another sign of loss of executive function like the presidential papers caper.

Dear President Trump: You are too late. The freight is not coming. It’s not sailing between China and the US west coast, it’s not in the west coast ports. We can literally see this from space, by way of GPS tracking. There are no container vessels waiting off west coast ports for a berth. There will not suddenly be ships off the west coast before the end of the month.

Why Trump believers insist on lying about this rather than bracing themselves and preparing the country for the reality check to come in mere days is beyond me. They can’t spew enough believable denials to hide the shelves as they empty in the days and weeks ahead. They can’t cover up the damage already done to the US economy, the worst of which has yet to arrive.

Conditions won’t change much based on the so-called 90-day pause and temporary tariff reduction announced overnight. It’s still going to take time for factories in China to ramp back up, rejigger containerized shipping – and all of this is at risk of being changed again in 90 days. The loss of faith by consumers and business purchasers here in the states may not be restored as quickly. Orders will go south under any conditions now.

Sally Quinn, who ruled over Washington society for decades, and, yes, her parties were the gateway to deep state power, wails indignantly: "This is a city where people seek, and if it all goes well for them, wield power." What is that "it" that "goes well for them"? It used to be Sally, and now she's just another has-been terrified that someone else is wielding the power without her name on the top of the invitation. The power she wielded over others is gone, and she cannot stand it. "It's as if the air is permeated with an invisible poison," she cries, meaning us. The people have wielded their own power and shrugged off Sally's illicit and anti-democratic power, and among Sally and her extra-special peers, "Nobody feels safe. Nobody feels protected."

I couldn't even read past that. If Trump does no more than expose these media scum for the whoremasters they are, he will have done enough.

Some data to add to the rhetoric spraying about- Imported goods represent only 11 percent of consumer spending. The bottom 60 percent of consumer households are seeing easing inflation from lower rents, cheaper gasoline prices, and better wages due to less competition from immigrants. Top 40 percent of households are benefiting from same as well as strong net worth gains during the last 24 months. Meanwhile corporate earnings are still strong and improving while promised deregulation and supply side benefits are still to come. This all within a US economy that has time and again demonstrated an ability to adapt to policy changes. In short not an environment where being a tariff downer is a winning position…

Gadfly, I realized you proved your ignorance on shipping AIS when you claimed we needed the ability to track ships like we do air traffic. I realize you don’t know that can be done without going to space. Here: MarineTraffic.com

3 container ships and 1 car carrier will arrive at the port of Long Beach today. Oakland has none arriving today, but 4 container ships arrive tomorrow. I know this may come as a surprise, but it takes several days for a ship to cross the Pacific, so that means those ships were already en route.

Now quit telling lies. You are bad at it. By the way, April was a record setting month for cargo imports.

It's very instructive reading Stephen Greene's posts on Instapundit, but not in the way he thinks. Like today, he is telling us how evil Islam Is, you know, because of terrorist acts like 9-11, that's one prong, the propaganda, but the other prong is that we send operatives in to these groups, who would be pretty powerless without state sponsorship, and train them, arm them, fund them, even lead on countries to provide them shelter and support, the way Pakistan's defense minister just admitted that the US does to Pakistan.

It's not like the US is the "world's police force," no, it's worse than that, that could almost be justified to the normies, it's that the US is the world's police force, and is always framing "criminals" that they provides us with a pretext to "punish them for their crimes."

Really, there is a guy in the 19th century who explained the whole strategy of the US, though he was talking about the British Empire, Mackinder.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Geographical_Pivot_of_History

We use Islamic terrorism, same as we use the racist ideology of the Ukrainians, who even codified their racism into their constitution. They believe that they are the only true Slavs because the Mongol invasion contaminated the blood of the Russians with that of a "lower race," and this is why they have put preserving Ukrainian blood into it, whatever nonsense rationalization that they might push here. We have even seen comments to this effect in these threads, that the Ukrainians are some kind of master race. If you say that some Russian did something great, they will reply by saying, "well that can be explained because his maternal grandmother was Ukrainian" or something.

Anyway, we use these ideologies, because they can be turned to violence, which serves our strategy. These terrorist groups are in the business of providing pretexts to us for our endless wars.

Your concerned what a free 747 is going to cost the American taxpayer to upgrade.
Where was this concern when millions of illegal immigrants were invading our country and eating up our subsistence?
I bet that upgrading a 747 is a hell of a lot cheaper than providing food and money to millions of people who were here illegally.
You might think that your comment has some merit, but keep in mind you and your window licking friends brought us Joe Biden. The man you insisted was competent to be president. Now the current administration is going to be spending time and treasure undoing the shit Biden got us into. So. As cogent as you think your comments are, they ain't.

Do you have that at hand? What does that timeline look like, then? Come, come. Surely you must have it. It's the basis of your argument - right? Predictable results, on time, under budget?

“ May 12 (Reuters) - The U.S. government posted a $258 billion budget surplus for April, up 23% from a year earlier, reflecting strong tax receipts in the final month of the tax season and surging collections of import duties, the Treasury Department said on Monday.
Treasury reported that net customs duties in April totaled $16 billion, about a $9 billion increase from the year-earlier period. The increase occurred during a month in which President Donald Trump boosted tariffs on Chinese goods to as much as 145% while slapping at least 10% on imports on goods from other countries.”

Second biggest monthly budget surplus in history.
