"Kamala Harris will reemerge in California on Wednesday night for her first major speech since her departure from the White House....

"Harris’s 2002 run for district attorney of San Francisco against an entrenched incumbent helped inspire the formation of Emerge and the group’s mission to create a support system for women running for office. Her trajectory and the obstacles she faced in her campaigns have shaped some of the training programs and curriculums that Emerge developed for female candidates to guide them through the unique challenges facing women...."

From "Kamala Harris reemerges to condemn Trump as she weighs a run for governor" (WaPo)(free-access link).

The original meaning of the word "emerge" was "To come up out of a liquid in which (the subject) has been immersed" (OED). Then, liquid wasn't crucial, and it meant: "To come forth into view; to pass out, issue, from an enclosed space, area of obscuration." One could emerge from the darkness or from a crowd or a building. Figuratively, it came to mean "To rise into notice, come forth from obscurity; also, to issue from a state of subjection, suffering, embarrassment" or even "by such a process as evolution."

So why do you think "Emerge" was chosen as the name for an organization to help female candidates? I get the feeling there's an idea that women are naturally buoyant and will float to the surface if they're not held under. This chimes with the traditionalist idea that women are part of nature and lacking individual will and reason.

Wouldn't their cause be better served by sticking to good candidates? Seriously, I'm not being snarky.

I think this gets to the (wrong-headed) idea that the reason Kamala lost was because the voters weren't able to get to know her. Her candidacy lacked the time necessary for her to emerge as a formidable and well-qualified Presidential candidate in her own right.

Extrapolating these thoughts: Many female Democrat candidates (AOC, Klobuchar, Whitmer, Clinton and others) are wonderful, super-awesome, exceptionally groovy people, who would make great Presidents if only their intrisically-female characteristics were allowed to emerge within the collective consciousness of the electorate.

The other way to think about this is that Kamala needs an entity ready for when the Dems retake power and funds begin to reemerge from a reconstituted USAID...

"Emerge" is probably an echo "Rise" or "Uprising" in left-leaning politics. "Emerge" doesn't imply "from below" like "Rise" does, but they all mean *movement from a place you should no longer be to a place where you should be.*

Interestingly, in local politics it's assumed a female candidate gets an automatic 2% boost compared to males. At least where I practiced it.

Or...the women should be seen as butterflies.

And what "tradition" might that be? This sentence may describe the witless Harris, but absolutely has nothing to do with my wife.

Well...I don't need to say this, but we all know how Kamala overcame the obstacles she faced in her early campaigns to be noticed.
I don't know where she's giving her much anticipated speech....(sound of crickets)....
But I hope it's in Oakland. It would be an ironic background for California policies that want to go nationwide.

Is there any hope it will be 17 years before Harris reemerges again after this?

In Harris' case, it's because she's being supported by invisible Democratic Operatives who are preventing her from sinking, as she would, given her (lack of) merit.

I might be wrong, but from what I read Emerge was formed back in 2002, and not last year when she became the Dem candidate for POTUS.

right?
what is her projected budget for this 3 year campaign?

some moron earlier today was claiming that President Trump wants to be the first Trillionaire..
Can we assume, that Kammy wants to be the 1st Presidential candidate to burn through a Trillion dollars in a loss?

Another Handmaid's Tale analogy (I am caught up now, so just wait for each week's new episode):

The Commanders ostensibly take over to solve a fertility crisis. In reality, they take over because they want all the pussy, and they don't want to have to put up with women's shit. They violate their stated goals whenever those doctrines endanger their quiet enjoyment of a pussy oligopoly.

Never underestimate the electorate's (of both sexes) unwillingness to put up with women's shit.

Not saying this like I approve it - just noting a reality. Even the D's own "Not enough people will vote for a woman!" translates into "Not enough people will put up with our shit!"

The passive voice is doing a lot of work in that question. Before I could answer it, I would need to know who did the choosing. I am going to guess that it was one or more wealthy men.

Who knows why they come up with names. Probably the first ten options were taken and this was the first of their options that was available.

I'm struck more by the levels of distance she is from the group. She herself (per the article) did not found Emerge. She did not even "inspire" its founding. So she was apparently, merely one of a number of people who "helped inspire the formation of Emerge"?

So seemingly, she can't even do THAT little of her own agency? Seems accurate.

I had a professor who often referred to someone, i.e. a less clever student, as wearing lead shoes. In other words, if one can't follow the proof of Euler's Totient function theorem, for instance, there must be lead shoes holding that person firmly to the floor. I think he looked my way a few times the lead shoes meme arose. Drat those coprime integers.

Questions about branding only matter when the project isn't inherently self-defeating. Are women generally stupid and gullible enough to accept political advice from Kamala Harris? If so, that's probably why they fail at politics without a massive crutch. A billion dollar advantage, full lawfare press, and two sponsored assassination attempts weren't enough for Harris to defeat Trump, though.

Back in the good old days this was used as a test for witches. Toss a woman in the water, and if she drowns she’s innocent; if she floats she’s a witch. Kamala’s in no danger.

That doesn't follow. Human beings are part of nature, are they not? The idea is that they will be able to rise if they aren't held down forcibly. They will be able to rise when they are able to use their abilities freely without constraint.
Stanley "emerged" from the jungle and found Livingstone. That doesn't mean that he was lacking individual will or reason.

"Emerge" has echos for me of "Womansurge" (or was in "Womensurge"?) a short-lived group founded by Betty Friedan when she was feuding with the NOW leadership. You could say that flood waters surge in. You could also say that invading armies surge in. It's common for revolutionary movements to liken themselves to forces of nature. They aren't saying that they are powerless, but rather that they are extremely powerful.
