"[H]is sartorial inspirations included people he described as 'accidentally well dressed' or, as he put it, those who 'have no intention of being fashionable.'"

"'They have just found a style that works for them and developed it throughout their life, which often leads to their clothes telling interesting stories,' he said. As for his hair, he explained that he started growing it out seven years ago when he was looking for ways to style his thick, fuzzy curls. 'It just stuck ever since,' Mr. Willis said, 'and I think the style unintentionally guided how my way of dressing has developed. And it keeps my ears warm in winter!''"

From "Look of the Week/Dreamy Hair With Clothes to Match" (NYT)(free-access link so you can see what Billy Willis wore).

Note: I love it — the clothes and the hair. Reminds me of Marc Bolan in his Tyrannosaurus Rex days.

I remember Room 222!

Not the image I had in mind when I read "Dreamy hair with clothes to match".
I was thinking more George Clooney's hair, or something of that nature. With a nice suit, ala Cary Grant. I'd been reading about how suits were making a comeback (probably articles sent out by suit makers).
Not at all taken by the photo of a guy with Richard Simmons hair. And yes, his clothes do tell a story, though not what they may think.

But then, I'm a man who proudly wears shorts.

Or Victor Garber on his way to the studio to shoot Godspell.

Dude's "nice hair" and facial expression are exactly how I remember Art Garfunkle. But not the clothes.

Willis's clothes all appear to be "ribbed."

For Althouse's pleasure?

There's a resemblance to actor Paul McCrane in "Fame" (also in "ER" years later).

Everything old is new again. Hair is straight from the 60s. the clothes from the 90s.

Clean shirt, new shoes
And I don't know where I am goin' to
Silk suit, black tie (black tie)
I don't need a reason why

They come runnin' just as fast as they can
'Cause every girl crazy 'bout a sharp-dressed man

Gold watch, diamond ring
I ain't missin' not a single thing
And cufflinks, stick pin
When I step out, I'm gonna do you in

They come runnin' just as fast as they can
'Cause every girl crazy 'bout a sharp-dressed man

I like the colorful charlie brown/grandma's hand-made blanket draped over the sofa, jacket.

That kind of hair is much more fun if it isn't yours. Ah, the 70s.

Looks like he could have been the model for the cover art on the album “Hair”.

Ann Althouse said...

His hair is not like the Room 222 guy, Richard Simmons, or Art Garfunkel. There's a difference between a uniform sphere of frizz and a tumble of little curls. People with non straight hair can figure out how to get the different looks. Lots of demonstration of the techniques on TikTok.

Long hair that is stylishly unkempt? Does Althouse not recall the COVID era, when men grew beards (in my case, a very redneck looking goatee was all I could manage) and let their hair go wherever it wanted? This is not a new thing, this is a revenant of the stay home and become a mushroom era!

That guy needs a pair of shorts.

If I had that face and jaw-line, I could wear anything I wanted too, and women would "love it."

Bill Cunningham is sorely missed. Is the photographer visually impaired—these choices of the week are uninspired.

Humble curls? yeah - if you're lucky.

Some of us just can't do style. Give us the clothes, do the hair, but it really never works. We are not stupid, but we are stylishly retarded.

JFC. All those people look ridiculous. Except the woman in the blue coat; she looks nice.

Ugh. Imagine the crud those pants pick up from the street.

Most of those looks are stylishly layered outfits that only work in perfectly chilly weather. If they were warmer they wouldn't need jackets, and if they were colder they'd be wearing big, puffy coats.

Does everyone in NYC dress like that? If they do, then there's no way to stand out and no point in dressing up.

Whatever happened to Karen Valentine, and what did Sally Field have that she didn't?
