"He was clearly eligible for naturalization. He met all the requirements for citizenship, and he had applied for it last year, and he was scheduled for an interview, and he should have been naturalized."
Said the lawyer for Mohsen Mahdawi, quoted in "Palestinian Columbia student detained by ICE at citizenship interview/Mohsen Mahdawi, who has been a green-card holder for 10 years, was detained at an ICE field center in Vermont while appearing for a naturalization test" (WaPo)(free-access link).

Close only counts in horseshoes. The Democrats could put up much more of a fight against this, of course, but they aren't. For some strange reason, the New York law firms are very reluctant to defend Palestinians. That's only going to make life more difficult for globalists seeking jobs in government and law over time.
Shoulda', woulda', could'a ....
Did he tell the truth about WHY he was applying for that green card? Did he follow all US laws while waiting for his citizenship? Immigration is a privilege. Not a right. Privileges can be withdrawn just as easily as they are extended. After the whole "Maryland Man" bullshit I don't trust ANY reporting on these deportations/immigrations and especially distrust any LAWYER representing said perp.
That article left me with the feeling that some information has been omitted. I might be wrong. I'm not going to hunt for it, but will react with little surprise if the missing info crosses one of my screens.
"said the lawyer of the accused" is a phrase that always makes me wonder what isn't being said.
He overstayed his student visa term for HOW many years?
This guy violated terms of his visa, so absolutely committed felony by violating federal immigration law, hasn't paid his overstay fines, willfully incited vandalism, rioting, and violence at his university, and yet he's still "eligible for naturalization"? That's the progressive-liberal definition of "good citizen" material?
"That's only going to make life more difficult for globalists seeking jobs in government and law over time."
You see clamping down on criticism of one single country on Earth as making life difficult for the globalists?! You think the "globalists" are the peasants in Gaza and not that one nation which we can't criticize. You are safer criticizing America than that one other country.
Yeah. Sure. This is about globalism.
Trump is pursuing an "America close-second" agenda to Israel.
Dave Smith and Candace Owens are basically the only people on the right with an ounce of integrity on this issue.
But he wasn’t. There are lines. He didn’t pass the test. Send this guy back to his shit hole country.
"Close only counts in horseshoes...." Well, hand grenades, too.
The article manages to trot out every single emotionally-triggering attribute for this poor downtrodden young man-as-victim, but neglect to bring up any considerations that could impinge on his actual case. Protest activities, or visa dates, for instance. 'Grew up in a refugee camp', and so on and so forth. This is apparently all they have to argue with now, so the Progressive Democrat Left will pull all the stops to make the Trump Administration popular reforms into a humanitarian crisis, just like they did with St. George. Mohamed Ali had 'Rope-A-Dope', Progressives have 'Tropes-and-Dopes'.
Democrat US Senator Chris Van Hollen has announced that he's going to go to El Salvador and bring back the terrorist Trump deported to prison there.
That direct attack in the President of the United States should be interesting. I wonder if Trump will allow the plane to transit US airspace with van Hollen and the terrorist travelling back to the US.
"Privileges can be withdrawn just as easily as they are extended."
Democrats certainly understand this, which is why they're constantly trying to conflate Constitutional rights with privileges.
The linked article uncritically reports that Mahdawi "is a Buddhist who believes in nonviolence and, during the campus protests, advocated for a peaceful political solution to the conflict in the Middle East." But as might be imagined, there is another side, one the WaPo reporters are indifferent to conveying, https://x.com/ShaiDavidai/status/1911978781402669113 (Shai Davidai):
"I don’t know what Mohsen Mahdawi (the @Columbia student detained by ICE earlier today) was arrested for—and like anyone else, he deserves due process.
But before you turn him into a folk hero, here are a few facts:
1. Before moving to the U.S., Mohsen studied Computer Engineering at Birzeit University—a campus long tied to terrorism and anti-Western extremism.
2. In college, Mohsen wrote a poem praising Dalal Mughrabi—the terrorist who murdered 38 Israelis, including 13 children, in the 1978 Coastal Road Massacre. This was the worst massacre of Jews in Israel until the October 7 Massacre.
3. Expressing his anger at Israel, Mohsen once stated that "stones and Molotovs weren’t enough” to satisfy his thirst for revenge.
4. Mohsen proudly noted on social media that his cousin is a high-ranking member of Palestinian Islamic Jihad.
5. Despite multiple chances to do so, Mohsen refused to condemn Hamas for the October 7 massacre, calling them merely “a product of the occupation.”
6. Mohsen led pro-Hamas protests under the “By Any Means Necessary” banner—standing beside @NerdeenKiswani who has openly called for Israel to be “wiped off the map.”
7. In a pro-Hamas protest at in January 2024, Mohsen declared that “there is nothing more honorable than dying for a noble cause.”
8. Despite all of this, and even though he denied any allegations of rape and torture by Hamas, I invited Mohsen in December 2023 (and then again in April 2024) to help start a moderate, pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian, anti-Hamas organization on campus. He declined.
I hope justice is served in his case.
But let’s be real about who this guy is."
You see clamping down on criticism of one single country on Earth as making life difficult for the globalists?!
No Jew hater. You're free to criticize whomever you want. The subject of the riotous violence does not matter. They could be agitating for Occupy Wall Street or BLM and if they veer into violence and intimidation they will get the same treatment. Illegal immigrants will be expelled for illegal acts. It's very simple.
That the immigration violators from that part of the world choose to agitate on behalf of Hamas is sad, but irrelevant to the consequences they face for breaking laws. Intimidating minority students and blocking access to classrooms is something Democrats like you favor and have been doing and encouraging since before I was born and your couching it in anodyne infantile antizionism doesn't make it any more palatable to those of us who want our campuses thug-free. A thug is a thug is a thug... and most likely a Leftist.
Every time.
Dd driver - Oy. Good people advocate for democracy and democracies and oppose dictatorships and terrorists. People who love America and who love freedom do at least. And yet when there is war against civilization you support the terrorists and oppose the free people who are fighting barbarism at the tip of the spear!?!
Nice values. I want the terrorists dead. You seem to want the ones fighting them dead.
We are not the same.
What are these Palestinians studying at Columbia? Finance?
Those were crimes: riots, seizing buildings and public spaces, and organized intimidation of Jewish and other studests at Columbia, not "expressions of free speech." And the "speech" they engaged in was lending support to foreign designated terrorist groups. They weren't holding academically minded classroom debates. If Mahdawi participated in planning or executing any of these crimes, he of course should be deported.
The media is witholding important information. They say only that he is planning to get a Master's degree at Columbia. Well, he hasn't even started it yet, then, and he has been in the country for ten years already. Is that for a two-year degree? Even graduate and undergraduate education would take only six years. Is he even here on a visa granted for education? What weasels.
Another lawyer advocating for his client.
he should have been naturalized."
No, he should have waited until he became naturalized to engage in criminal activity. But he didn't.
As doctrev points out, horseshoes, hand grenades, and atom bombs.
In: Jewish students studying and attending classes in peace.
Out: Alien political activists/Islamic shit-disturbers
the 10 year student and Jew hater.
Turns out there exist many moribund laws that the Trump team has dug up, dusted off and put to use, including many of the premises on which deportation is being executed. One I read about last week was the long narrow (1 mile by 1500 miles) strip along the border had been declared "Federal land" by a prior president and by virtue of another old law, can be declared a military base like other federal properties can.
Voila! Now Trump has the legal authority to put the Army all along the border and prosecute trespassers as they do those who break into secured areas of bases. I don't want to hear anyone from the party of "hey let's prosecute Trump using a law that's never been applied this way!" object to this proper and efficient use of EXISTING law.
"Just imagine if non citizen university students on a student visa or people here illegally with no visa at all were protesting on a college campus calling for the death of all black people and celebrating when black people are murdered, raped, tortured and kidnapped.
"Does anyone for one minute believe those people would not be and should not be expelled and deported?
"Apparently there are different rules for Jews."
He isn't owed anything. The thug has proven himself disqualified from our nation and DQ'd from citizenship.. We know that makes the left cry - because leftists love criminals and Israel/Jew haters.

You're half wrong. I really don't think you understand how hard it's going to be for rootless cosmopolitans within the halls of liberal internationalism. Ethnic purity for me, diversity for thee is not going to cut it. If anything, the intense effort dedicated to protecting such people is going to burn out- sooner rather than later. So relax.
So a Palestinian who grew up under the occupation is anti-zionist? I wonder what percentage of N Ireland Catholic immigrants during the Troubles were pro IRA and anti-Brit.
Closing time.
Democrat US Senator Chris Van Hollen has announced that he's going to go to El Salvador and bring back the terrorist Trump deported to prison there.
I met the twerp dome 40+ years ago when he was just starting out. He was very big on promises, much lighter on execution. Has he changed? I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting to see him actually do something. He’ll have an excuse: his dog needed walking, his bedsheets needed ironing, something like that.
Said the lawyer for Mohsen Mahdawi
Lawyer pounds table on behalf of client. News at 11:00.
DD Driver,
Violence, violent rhetoric, harassment and intimation (behind masks - mind you) - all protected speech as long as it's only aimed at Jews/Israel.
right.
"Democrat US Senator Chris Van Hollen has announced that he's going to go to El Salvador and bring back the terrorist Trump deported to prison there."
It should make for great TV. Maybe he can get AOC to lean against the prison wall and cry.
The precedent Trump has set is that any time a president doesn't like a green-card holder, he can just instruct his Secretary of State to say the person's political views might have serious adverse consequences for US foreign policy and then boot him out. Not a great selling point for the Gold Card.
And ball room dancing!
can we keep van hollen over there, and how much would it cost
The lawyer seems to feel that his client has a right to become an American citizen, and that right has been infringed. Where could such a right possibly arise? Is there any other country that owes his client citizenship? Why would we want his worthless piece of shit client in our country? I just wish we could deport the lawyer along with him. Antarctica needs lawyers!
At around noon on 14 April 2025, America ceased to have a law-abiding government. The US president’s middle finger to the court was echoed by his attorney-general, secretary of state, vice-president, and El Salvador’s vigilante dictator Nayib Bukele. The latter is playing host to what resembles an embryonic US gulag.
The Oval Office drama offered a civics lesson to the world: America’s government pays greater respect to a foreign Trump-loving fool than its own Supreme Court. Trump casually told Bukele he may need to build more supermax jails for “homegrown” deportees, which means US citizens.
Evidence can now be withheld on national security grounds or seemingly invented, as it was on Monday with Garcia. A government lawyer who conceded that Garcia’s deportation was mistaken was placed on administrative leave. Should the wrong person be deported in shackles, the US can do nothing about it. That would interfere with another country’s sovereignty, they say. This is from the same administration that is demanding other countries’ territory.
what did the penguins ever do to us,
Trump is going after the lawyers and judges. Just as he went after election officials. That is the first step in removing access to law for anyone who would dare to stand in his way.
“ One I read about last week was the long narrow (1 mile by 1500 miles) strip along the border had been declared "Federal land" by a prior president and by virtue of another old law, can be declared a military base like other federal properties can.”
How about when Biden declared 6500 square miles land west of the Mississippi off limits to economic development without eve benefit of “old laws”. Just Executive Orders.
just like the 65 project and the doj went after Eastman, Navarro and Guiliani, like that,
the problem is as gunther grass relayed it to jacques revel, (as heard by Tom Wolfe,) 'they keep saying, the long dark night of fascism, is falling on America but it always lands on Europe,
"Democrat US Senator Chris Van Hollen has announced that he's going to go to El Salvador and bring back the terrorist Trump deported to prison there."
Remember when the Logan Act was a thing?
So a Palestinian who grew up under the occupation is anti-zionist? I wonder what percentage of N Ireland Catholic immigrants during the Troubles were pro IRA and anti-Brit.
LOL yet the Irish and English made peace. And you still don't understand why they could but Palestinians can't.
I'm not surprised at all. All Leftists are blind in one eye. Some both.
IF Van Hollen actually did as he says he probably would not make it back out without Trump's help. And he certainly won't return with the ejectee intact.

Mike: hindsight is 20-20. Both conflicts seemed intractable to this Irish American in the eighties. And a lot more Americans were contributing to the IRA than the PLO (Hamas just getting started). Your point is irrelevant to the injustice of rejecting naturalization and arresting a peaceable green card holder based on political beliefs.
The naturalization process should be cheaper and faster but far more stringent. America is no longer the open, unpopulated territory that simply needed bodies to fill it. We need better people than we often get. Mohsen Mahdawi is a very bad fit.
I get the feeling that his problem wasn't meeting some basic requirements. I think his problem was engaging in disqualifying behavior.
The 1965 immigration reforms were blatantly discriminatory against those of white Christian European backgrounds. We need some affirmative action to catch up.
We have enough Jew haters in the United States. We don't need to import more.
No one who agitates on behalf of Hamas should be naturalized.
"Turns out there exist many moribund laws that the Trump team has dug up, dusted off and put to use..."
I wonder where he ever got that idea.
“Ever since Kash Patel and Dan Bongino took over at the FBI, Patriot Front completely disappeared off the face of the earth.
Not one more peep out of them.
So, yes, they were 100% feds.”

“Democrat US Senator Chris Van Hollen has announced that he's going to go to El Salvador and bring back the terrorist Trump deported to prison there."
I wish he’d take that liver-lipped, S of a B Chris Murphy with him.
Two shitbirds, one stone…
Hassayamper "The 1965 immigration reforms were blatantly discriminatory against those of white Christian European backgrounds. "
I understand your tongue-in-cheekiness. But if you allow me to use it as a springboard to seriousness: the 65 immigration law was really discriminatory against American POC's.
We made this huge mistake last century of trying to fix all our social ills at the same time. Black equality. Hispanic equality. Women's equality. War on Poverty. 18-yo vote. Closing the snake-pit sanatoria. Free international trade. And re-opening immigration.
These things worked at cross-purposes. We told the Black man, "hey, sorry, you're equal to us now." He replied "Well, white man, it's about damn time, but ok, bygones." We added, "Oh, by the way, you won't just be competing against white men. You'll be competing against women of all colors. And Latinos. And middle-class people from other countries who can afford plane tickets here. And we'll dump free money into your neighborhood to blow up any rational incentives. And we won't take the crazies out of your neighborhood anymore. And we'll unprotect that factory you were hoping to finally get a 'white' job at." To which he replied "D'oh!"
You can rewrite that from the perspective of any other group.
Would have been nice to focus on one problem at a time.

Iman: "Democrat US Senator Chris Van Hollen has announced that he's going to go to El Salvador."
Would be hilarious as hell if Bukele locked him up for espionage and had him spend a few nights in T-shirt and boxers with a shaved head, until El Sal succumbed to Trump's "vigorous protests" against the mistreatment.

DD, Readering: how many Sharia Supremacists should be in the US?
I requested my grandfather’s naturalization papers (he emigrated from Sicily in 1922) and he was naturalized in 1927. On the paperwork he swore allegiance to the US, abjured allegiance to King Victor Immanuel III, and declared that he was not a *polygamist nor (I think) an anarchist*
He came after surviving a WWI German POW camp where the prisoners were starved; he survived bc he had a useful skill (shoemaking) and I thank God he got on that boat in 1922
Hey Skipper: no more than the number of Mark Levin fans.
I can barely tolerate the former so I think that would be my upper limit.
Readering, your stupidity is overdetermined.
In this case, as in the case of the "Maryland dad"/"gang member" it's hard to know who's telling the truth. As I find out more, my mind changes back and forth about this. If you're in the middle of the road, uncertain which way to go, you're apt to get run over by the 18-wheelers rushing one way or the other.
