"I told them not to worry, nobody does self-deprecating better than I do."

Said Donald Trump at the Gridiron Dinner in 2018. Supposedly, there was worry that he might not be able to fit the tradition of Presidents being self-deprecating.

Last night was this year's Gridiron Dinner, and he wasn't there at all: "At Gridiron Dinner, Jokes About Trump, Musk and Russia Abound/But President Trump wasn’t around to hear any of the barbs thrown at the annual D.C. event" (NYT). I read that NYT article so you don't have to. Sounds like the NYT is also tired of it:
Even after all these years, jokes about Mr. Trump and Russia still play with the official Washington crowd. Those in the Hyatt basement, which was packed with reporters, editors, television anchors and ambassadors, laughed along.... The PBS journalist Judy Woodruff opened up the room with jokes about Mr. Musk’s fathering so many children and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s drinking....  One of the less successful acts centered on two men pretending to be the House minority leader, Hakeem Jeffries, and Mr. Schumer, the Senate minority leader, covered in leaves. “Lost in the woods” was the chorus. (“No one cares about your pronouns when you’re lost in the woods.”).... Another act had a mock Usha Vance singing about being a phony populist....

That may be the single most hilarious line I’ve ever known him to say, and I will go on the record as saying I’m sure it’s intentional.

Are there any grounds for calling Usha Vance a “phony populist”? Or is this yet another made up “fact” for lefties to push at the gullible?

Russia, Russia! One of so many hoaxes: Biden’s normalcy, COVID, climate change, lawfare against Trump, Jan.6 “insurrection”, etc. Something approximating half the population is delusional. Trump is the effect, not the cause.

Joe Biden thought self-deprecating meant it was time to change his diaper.

Funny Not Funny.

I don’t remember, how many of those did Biden go to?

They still haven’t picked up on the undeniable fact that the joke is on them.

The last time I’d heard anything about Judy Woodruff was in the Summer of 2024 when she lied to her audience that former President Trump tried to talk Israel out of a cease-fire.

They’re upset Trump didn’t show up so they could shit on him while pretending it’s good natured humor..

I still do not hate the MSM enough.

How many people get that this is a joke?

Just curious.

Usha Vance was the DEI lawyer for Disney. She was in charge of forming the legal policies for Diversity and whatever other buzzwords until the day Vance was chosen by Trump and she resigned.

So.

I thought it was funny. And intentional. And very typical of Trump's humor. (I think part of Trump's conflict with Zelenskyy is that Zelenskyy is envious of Trump being a better comedian.)

Judy Woodruff is the same age as Trump. But seems a lot older.

The Gridiron Dinner, like the Academy Awards, is one of those events that I never paid much attention to, but some interesting columns would be written about whatever happened. It's a little sad to see it dying, but it is.

When the official Washington crowd thinks about Trump and Russia, they don't know, care or remember that people in the CIA and other intelligence agencies tried to take down Trump to protect their power. They failed, and Trump is in a position to go after them. There is dark comedy in that, but they wouldn't find it funny.

So sad. They still don’t realize that they no longer matter.

Usha and JD Vance went to a concert at the John F Kennedy Center and were booed by the audience when they entered their box. The same anti-social shunning behaviors that the first Trump Administration got when they arrived on the scene. If there had been violence, it likely would have been applauded. The Left eats its own when they stray from protocol.

I think we can all agree jokes about them are hilarious and jokes about us are Just Not Funny unless of course they are self deprecating in which case reverse what I just said.

The gridiron dinner used to be where the POTUS would show up and take some comic jabs from the Press and show they were "good Sports". The jabs were supposed to "singe, not burn". Over the years, that held true only for the Democrat Preisdents. Starting with Bush, it became another chance to make vicious attacks on the POTUS and his family. It was dialed up to X10 under Trump. Now, the Press just talks to themselves or their fellow democrats, like schumer.

WHCA Dinner is even worse, Trump boycotted the whole thing for 4 years, and hopefully will continue the tradition. Should be renamed the "White House clown-press Association".

For the first time in its 140 year history the Gridiron Dinner didn't toast the president. Instead it toasted the First Amendment and the free press, at least according to reports. Did they really toast the president during Trump's first term?

Reporters used to be no-nonsense working guys with a cynicism about both parties. That made events like this not so bad. Now they're an "elite" and pretty much on one side of the political spectrum, so the smugness that accompanies in-group humor becomes insufferable.

Ha! What a bunch of butthurt, irrelevant losers!

Also, Washington is Hollywood for ugly people. Thank God they don't show up half-naked on the red carpet!

What tradition? When Obama was president he only made fun of other people and only bragged about out himself. Same for all the reporters. All the jokes were only about how wonderful Obama was and how lucky we are to have him.

Ever since Obama, it has only been about how great Democrats are and how horrible conservatives are. Really no reason to attend. It’s nonsense now.

Actually, I would edit that to say lighthearted jabs to all the presidents until George Bush when they really went vicious. Then when Obama was president, the dinner was used to tell the world how lucky we were that the savior deigned to grace us with his presence. Then as you said 10 times more vicious when Trump became president. Just like the press is in every way, the dinner is there to celebrate how virtuous Democrats are and how wicked and evil everyone else is. Just like all of the news media they worked hard to make themselves irrelevant.

If only Liza Minelli was still around to reprise her role in Cabaret, depicting the degredation that was Weimar Germany, for the self-celebrating press and DC elite. But I think the example would pass right over their thick little heads.
