"I have a tendency to do things that scare me, just for the sake of it. I've done skydiving, parachuting; I rode a motorcycle across India aged 63."

"I've also driv[en] semi trucks for a living, hauling 53 foot containers across the country. One day, parked at a huge truck stop in Texas, I got it into my head that it wasn't fair that I, a burly man in his sixties, could no longer skip like I did when I was seven. I asked myself why the case might be, and of course it was one of self consciousness. Had I been with my wife or a friend we could certainly do it. We'd be two adults playing like kids for a lark. But do it alone?"

That's the top comment on "Is Skipping Really a Good Workout? It feels like play. Here’s what fitness experts say about using the activity as a training tool" (NYT).

"There was no way. Not with hundreds of mean faced, macho truckers around. So I didn't. But the idea stayed with me for a few days, until I couldn't take it any more, and I skipped across the parking lot of a massive truck stop in Arkansas, first of all, then others. Of course truckers saw this 6 foot, 240 pound old man skipping like a little girl, and at first it scared me. But it annoyed me far too much to think I wasn't allowed to do so, so I did. I carried on skipping across truck stop parking lots until I quit the job just after COVID. And I have to say it is one of the most liberating and joyful things anyone can do, particularly in such a macho and depressing environment."

This fella has other issues. He sounds interesting, but there are issues.

If everyone who thinks the environment is macho and depressing would just skip.

I like that idea!

Better than keying Teslas or getting surgery.

🎼🎶 We skipped the light fandango
Turned some cartwheels across the floor
I was feeling kind of seasick
When the crowd called out for more...🎶

Do you have to go to school for that?

Guy seems to be a little full of himself. Notice he cant stop bragging about how big and tall he is. And wow, look at how brave he is, why he rode a motorcycle accross India! Gosh.

Personally, I don't see the benefit in "doing things that scare me". Seems more intelligent to "do thing that you enjoy". But if 6-10 500 lbs. speciman of 100 percent macho manhood wants to "Do things that scare him" why doesn't he jump into a pool of sharks. Now that's scary!

Skipping can be part of a good warmup for running. But yes, it does look ridiculous.

Did he also press wild flowers and wear women's clothing while hanging around in bars?

Better exercise is jumping rope.

Why don't you stop wearing makeup and dyeing your hair, and being so damned SNARKY, and take up skipping yourself, lil missy? YOu are so f'n ugly judging others. Your day will come. God knows. Dawn wept.

A couple weeks ago I had a short bout with the flu, and was indeed a Whiter Shade of Pale.

When I ran regularly, i used to skip to warm up. It's a great way to do it.

"Many competitive athletes perform drills to improve their speed, power, reaction time and coordination. But without a coach to guide you, these moves can feel intimidating, Ms. Movold said. If you’re in this camp, skipping drills can be an approachable entry point."

I don't do drills now, so I'm not sure how skipping drills represents a change, let alone an approachable entry point.

I once had a choreographer try to teach me a dance move: hop right foot, hop left foot. I couldn't get it from his explanation. Finally, exasperated, he said, "Skip." That did it.

This guy, if he exists, is full of shit.

Andrew Huberman met world class sprint trainer to learn how to sprint better. First lesson? How to skip expressively.

Whenever I'm with anyone who is in a sour mood, I tell them to skip, because you can't not be joyful when skipping.

Boxers used to do it.

Football players have been doing that for years. A guy I work out with said his HS team started doing it and everybody thought it was funny but then they kept winning.

Jack LaLanne, the mid-century fitness guru, famously skipped down 5th Avenue in NYC.

I thought this was referring to skipping rope, which is something I like to do to warmup for a workout or skateboarding (my profile picture is no longer representative of something I just used to do).

I can see skipping being a good workout, but I think skipping rope would be just as good and leave a lot more room for progression. I can do a boxer skip pretty well now. Crossing my arms still eludes me more often than not. Someday I'll get some consistency.

I used to do the Follow the Yellow Brick Road skip.

I'm sure I still could, although I admit some circumspection about when and where.

And that trucker comment seemed, er ... less than authentic to me, reprising the theme for today's blog.

Expressive Skipping is being added to the 2028 Summer Olypics.

6", 240 lbs, in his 60's skipping across hard pavement? Wow -- congratulations on those knees!

My first thought was also about jumping rope. It's not just good exercise. It helps boxers with the footwork.

Now I'm thinking of the Eddie Murphy routine that couldn't be broadcast on SNL today: ''Moms and Dads, unless you want your sons to live in the 'Village' and skip to work, keep them as far away from Ken as possible, all right?"

Would the world be better if adults skipped more? The point is moot. It's not going to happen.

Good for The Skipper! More than one commenter has confirmed the bias against people coloring outside the lines.

The idea that you can't enjoy things that scare you leads to a self-limiting life. Who hasn't wondered, "WTF was I thinking" half-way down a double black diamond or while "safely" hooked to a cable on a via ferrata?

Only the brain-dead are truly "fearless". You miss out on a lot of great stuff if you're unwilling to find the edge of your envelope and, at least, give it a little nudge.

I'm terrified of heights and suffer from positional vertigo and spatial disorientation. Not a good combo for someone who finds wonder and peace walking as close to the sky as possible.

There ARE limits, though. If you've seen short you tube video of the "Stairway to Heaven" in Austria, you can be assured, I'll never go anywhere near it :-)

His inability to skip the first time he thought of doing it makes him a wimp. Do it the first time you think of it for the win. Just yesterday I was talking to my daughter on a video call while she was walking and I told her to skip... She said no, there are people around. She is 26 and I have failed her. I will continue to work on her to learn to skip when everyone is watching. Be who you are and walk and or skip to your own drumbeat and be confident in that action. You will probably be surprised to find others following.
