I got a call from a very good guy, and friend of mine, Kid Rock, asking me whether or not it would be possible for me to meet, in the White House, with Bill Maher, a man who has been unjustifiably critical of anything, or anyone, TRUMP. I really didn’t like the idea much, and don’t like it much now, but thought it would be interesting. The problem is, no matter how much he likes your Favorite President, ME, he will publicly proclaim what a terrible guy I am, etc., very much like the Democrats at my recent Address to the Joint Session of Congress, where I stated, correctly, that no matter what I said or did, they wouldn’t stand, they wouldn’t applaud, they wouldn’t smile or laugh and, certainly, they wouldn’t be in any way “nice.” Who knows, though, maybe I’ll be proven wrong? In any event, I’m doing a favor for a friend. I look forward to meeting with Bill Maher, Kid Rock and, I believe, even the Legendary Dana White will be present. It might be fun or, it might not, but you will be the first to know!

Immediately after the 2016 election, Maher had crazy Keith Olbermann on his show and was in complete agreement that Putin installed Trump. A known propaganda lie. Mahar is also willfully bling to the obvious absentee voter fraud of 2020. Bill Mahar is a godless asshole.
Trump is a gracious host so I'd expect a favorable report from Maher. When you're with Trump, he makes you feel like the most important person in the room, the reports are. Asks you questions and listens.
Mort Sahl wrote some speeches for JFK during the campaign and then went on to roast Kennedy in his comedy as he roasted Eisenhower. The Kennedys did not appreciate that. Wikipedia even says that Ronald Reagan was a close friend of Sahl's, but you wouldn't know that from Mort's comedy routines.
Much of Sahl's appeal came from being new and different. Few people were doing political satire (at least on the West Coast) when he was doing it. His later stuff after the novelty wore off doesn't wear as well, but he gets credit for being honest and willing to skewer both sides, though he did get lost in the JFK conspiracy theory weeds for some time.

No. The idea isn't to form debate teams. The idea is for Bill Maher to get to know, a little, the man as opposed to the myth. That involves seeing him in a social setting. I'm sure Trump will be very gracious and use his famous winning charm. I doubt Maher will feel uncomfortable or ganged up on. Trump will make sure he has a good time and lots of laughs.
Trump's post isn't rude to guest Maher, he's basically daring him to keep an open mind and be fair and honest.
According to repeated Imus stories, Maher's father was an NBC news executive and whenever little Bill visited Radio City, Imus and sidekick McCord would set him up with NBC page girls, as a way to tweak his father, their boss.
I'd suppose he'd learned a sense of humor from that.
Maher will probably end up liking Trump in spite of himself. If he's honest about that on his show afterward, that will be a very valuable thing for Trump in terms of breaking down the false image of himself as a monster that the left wing media has built up for years. It will give a lot of people permission to re-examine their ideas about Trump the man and reexamining their ideas about his policies will follow.

Lately, Maher has been very critical of Democrats and the left in general, which usually garners (ducks) studio audience acquiescence if not outright approval. But the critiques have a what were you thinking? tone, which contrasts sharply with Maher's tone when his subject turns to Trump.
Maher recent rants have been against his own party. It's amusing to watch him get upset at 'woke' culture, especially since he has spent his entire life promoting, financing, and propagandizing for just that.
He can't admit that the policies he supports are destroying America.
Trump forces the left to look into his magic mirror, and they can't deal with it.
Maher is just another fool who is beginning to see that the 'cause' he has devoted his time to, is crap. Usually get two reactions- they turn violent, or they fold.

Both Kid Rock and Dana White know Maher and have been on his show. Having them there creates a balance of opinions to keep the discussion productive and the debate honest.
It also makes it harder for either Trump or Maher to mischaracterize the conversation afterward.

There is certainly precedent for Trump inviting celebrity adversaries and being civil and cordial. Which Maher did. He is, perhaps has become less close-minded than the average Liberal. In fact I generally respect Liberals who stand by Classical Liberal principles as Maher has. I think Maher's recent leftward criticism is based in his Liberal views, such as his enunciated principles like Free Speech, and that separates him from Progressives, who have no principles at all other than will to power.

President Trump is preparing the battle space. No, it isn't cordial to be contentious prior to the meeting, but he is the president doing a favor for a friend.
Maher will come away from the meeting saying that Trump was a great host, but Maher won't change is mind on policy.
It may be beneficial if Trump can educate Maher. Mahers fans are swayed by propaganda. If Maher changes his tune, fans will follow.

I've met Trump … twice. What rhhardin says is absolutely true.

That is an entirely appropriate way to treat a dinner guest - they get the option of dining with whoever else the host invited.
If Maher comes away speaking favorably of Trump, he may find that the people carving swastikas on Teslas and setting them on fire will do the same to him.
There is zero chance Bill Maher is going to say anything nice about Trump. But Trump should have said he was happy Maher has finally come around on Covid and Transgender issues in order to piss off Dems more.
