Whether Signal was a subsequently approved exception and whether it’s use for a discussion regarding the advisability of the Houthi attack was “critical for fulfilling mission operations” are questions that reports I have seen have yet to address. Certainly there were secure communications channels available.
Goldberg said today that he is open to disclosing the portion of the discussion that provided details of the proposed operation. If and when he does, the Administration may have more to say.
My take is that there was no intention to disclose the discussion but that it was needlessly reckless and reflects poorly on each of those participating.That there is zero acknowledgement of any problem is not surprising as a matter of domestic politics but both that reaction and the underlying facts detract from the perceived competence of our most senior national security team

We use Signal because it is fairly well encrypted. The usual texting apps are controlled by Apple, Google, etc. Which means that our government, and probably others, have all your regular text messages. It wouldn’t surprise me if the NSA had managed to break their encryption (there have been rumors to that effect), but likely no one else in the country has. If the NSA is cracking my Signal messages, they are going to have needed a FISA warrant, and at that point all my phone calls are being bugged anyway (and the FISA warrant is likely illegal).
