Question for the Texas delegation within the Althouse commentariat: my wife and I have escaped the Wisconsin winter doldrums and are lodged in San Antonio just south of the downtown area until the end of February. Besides the obvious attractions like the River Walk, Alamo, etc. what do you recommend we look into. (We do have a car rented, so can travel out of the immediate area, no problem).
I'm not tired of all the winning. But I've switched to donut holes for morning wins; apple slices for afternoon wins; popcorn just for those great evenings when Chuck Schumer, formerly Senate Majority leader, now trying out as cheerleader coach, is leading faint cheers from a bored restless crowd. Or when the ineffable Maxine Waters is screaming outside the Department of Education: "Let me in, I'm a Congresswoman, I pay your salaries" and all around voices are raised in that formerly magical incantation "am Congressman," "am Congresswoman." The curtain has been pulled aside, however, and the little men and women behind have been revealed. One man stands there , blocking the door - arms folded. One is enough. No one gets by. "I'm doing my job." Corn, popped.
PS. They could have called ahead for an appointment but they din't even try it. They're used to shouting "I am Congressman" and rushing in to bully someone. This time they only got to try it on a security guard - and he wasn't having it.
Re : the milk discussion from several days ago : "The younger Joseph Firmage was short, with boyishly thick brown hair and a wide nose. A workaholic known to linger at the office past midnight, he was an avowed teetotaler; one early employee recalled him ordering a glass of milk at a steakhouse." Firmage was an early internet phenom and founded a number of companies. Now, it seems he's a bit of a wacko.
I’ve been an Eagles fan for as long as I can remember, so I’m obviously going for the Eagles. But I keep seeing picks from so called experts that go something like this.
“The Eagles have the better team but I can’t go against Mahomes and Reid”.
As a Texan, most of the reason to go to San Antonio is the River Walk, so good choice there. Alamo really isn't much. If you have a military ID, then lots of shopping at Randolph and Lackland. There is plenty of good places to eat in San Antonio. We used to go to Sea World, which is much better than Fiesta Texas, but both are there if you have time and like amusement parks. San Antonio Rodeo is going on now, Keith Urban is playing tonight. If you have a car, I recommend driving up to New Braunfels, checking out Gruene Texas nearby. Just a bit further north is outlet malls at San Marcos. Once there, you are halfway to Austin, which is worth at least a day visit. Lots of other Missions to visit than just the Alamo.
All the liberals have not yet migrated over their safe space. I see a lot of their absolutely unhinged posts on X.
Starting with egg prices- their high price is all TRUMPs fault. From Day 1 of this administration I've seen that, and just now another new post blaming Trump..
And this: BREAKING: Senator Chris Murphy just organized this massive protest of Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s seizure of power. Democrats are organized and ready to fight back. Let’s go. So being elected and carrying out audits is a seizure of power... I wonder what we could define fighting back at an elected administration legally performing it's job as?
And I'm not sure what kind of drugs are required to write this: A fake billionaire is letting a fake genius destroy America because a bunch of fake patriots are too stupid, too entitled and too hateful to understand the difference between what is fake news and what is fact. What is JoJoFromJerz even talking about?
And then you have judges issuing absolutely lawless orders. At what point does a judicial order become sedition? I think we've reached that point here: https://x.com/amuse/status/1888310498036416643
Thomas Jefferson warned against the dangers of judicial tyranny. In my lifetime we've seen more and more of it to the point where judges are simply making things up in their rulings. That's how we got same sex marriage- it's right there in the Constitution, it's that until recently we didn't have anyone smart enough to see that.
“The Eagles have the better team but I can’t go against Mahomes and Reid”.
Does that make any sense?
I have no dog in tomorrow’s match up, but three Super Bowl wins in a row makes sense to me. Andy Reid has a damn good record that never seems to get the respect it deserves. I do think Mahomes is slowing down.
@Whiskeybum, there is lots to see. There are quite a few historic old Spanish Missions within a short drive of S.A., there is Schilo's deli, downtown (very good very old German delicatessen, near the riverwalk area, street level E Commerce St) See if you can get a copy of Texas Highways magazine, it'll have a calendar of events (online at https://texashighways.com/). Lots of breweries and, I would imagine, some distilleries too. Castroville is an Alsatian village W of S.A., and the hill country immediately to the NW is also very pretty. City Market in Luling is also terrific BBQ. I hope you enjoy your trip.
Whiskeybum: if you like history there’s a great WWII museum with a focus on Admiral Nimitz in Fredericksburg, TX. It’s about an hour from San Antonio. Nimitz was born there. Some great lunch places and a nice Main Street for window shopping.
I guess I should clarify. If she's talking about paying the DOE guy from her salary, I stand by my comment. If she's, however, talking about paying him from insider trading profits and other under-the-table type income, well... not so much.
Thanks all who have provided suggestions for our south Texas adventures. With being here for 3 weeks, I’m sure we’ll be able to hit the majority of these attractions.
Twenty years or so ago I made numerous business trips to San Antonio. I loved the place, but thought the River Walk was overrated. One thing about the Alamo is that the walled in park was outside the fort (and the wall was not there then). The front of the church faced inside the fort and the fort itself reached all the way down to the river. Much too large to be held by 160 men armed with muzzle loading muskets against 2000 or more soldiers.
There’s a legend of the ghost of a Mexican soldier haunting the walled-in park, but I normally stayed in a hotel thst overlooked the park and I never saw it.
The best QB with the best Head Coach usually win the big games.
I am sort of rooting for Philly, mostly because I am a Vic Fangio fan from his days as the Bears DC. However, I fully expect Pat Mahomes to pull the game out in the end.
What's up with Wheaton College? They posted congratulations and prayers to an alumnus, Russ Vought, who was confirmed to serve as the White House Director of the Office of Management and Budget. Then they withdrew their recognition and prayers because he'll be working for Trump and he's icky (I'm paraphrasing a bit).
I don't see the original post as being political, but I do view the withdrawal as being so. Also tacky. And cowardly.
The Left Talking Point (LTP) on Trump's EO banning men from women's sports has been released, we should hear it soon from Igna and Kaki. "This EO affects less than 1% of (collegiate) athletes". Apparently, the "collegiate" is optional, depending upon where the LTP is deployed. Of course, as the accompanying video makes clear, millions of female athletes are affected by this order. It is true, that the only people negatively affected are a small group of lunatics and con artists.
Gosh, I hope the Chiefs win tomorrow and Travis proposes to Taylor right after the game right on the field. She'll be so happy. Maybe they can be married at the White House Rose Garden with that Anglican lesbo bishop presiding and President Trump looking on benignly. That would do so much to heal the divisions in America. Then, afterwards, Taylor, Travis and all of America can go on to live happily ever after.
Jupiter - the left always have a hivemind LTP to regurgitate. The bottom line is leftists support the subjugation of women in Iran and in America. Do leftists want to allow men in women's locker rooms at the local YMCA - undressing their kids and grandkids? - you bet they do. loyal hiveminders gonna hivemind(D)
You do have to wonder who arranged that signing ceremony. That video is political gold. Trump has some very smart people working for him. As Scott Jennings noted, Trump took a position favored by 80% of the American electorate, and the Trump-haters felt obliged to take the other side. If stupid came in a box, their picture would be on the front.
Peach; "The bottom line is leftists support the subjugation of women in Iran and in America." Don't get me wrong, but I think that imputes a coherent and principled policy to the modern American Left, which is giving them credit they don't deserve. The majority of Leftists are thoughtless, ignorant, virtue-signaling twits. But as DOGE is demonstrating, there is a logic behind the Left, and it is purely monetary. The criminal scum who have used USAID to loot the American people could not care less what happens to anyone but themselves, for good or for ill.
Melania is out of the top 100 best sellers at Amazon. She’s #115. Hillary’s book is at #12,351 and Michelle’s workbook is at #5,285. So who is in the top 100? #20 1984 #27 On Tyranny #38 Source Code, My Beginning’s by Bill Gates #31 The Handmaid’s Tale #45 Fahrenheit 451 #78 The Art of the Deal #88 The Constitution of the US #100 Hillbilly Elegy #s 20, 27, 31, and 45 have been on the list since Trump’s reelection. Bill Gates’ autobiography was released 2/4, was #1 for a day or two. I figured maybe more people would buy his book on kindle but he’s #289 in the kindle store. #s 78 and 88 are new additions. Besides Frieda McFadden (4 books in the top 100) who has had several books on the list every time I check, the other big money maker is Coco Wyo. 5 books on the list (under $10 coloring books) this week and a presence on the list with several entries every week. The coloring books have an American culture vibe and are produced by a group of Vietnamese artists. "According to the Coco Wyo website, they’re “a little team with a cozy dream”. Coco Wyo has a lot of imitators, but none are as successful as they are.
Re yesterday's attempt by Mad Maxine to browbeat the guard into letting them all in so they could stage a scene at the DoE... the left just lost one of their major weapons. The ability to browbeat 'commoners' into doing what they want, because they're 'somebody important' is something they've used for a long time - as is the performative hysteria they've happily employed in the past. (Nothing convinces of sincerity like kneeling for BLM... or having sit-ins on Congress.)
They lost another one when a formerly cancelled softer expert was reinstated. Cancelling needs to be swift and permanent - if it can be rolled back then it's got no power at all.
So with no paid media cover from USAid, and two of their classic weapons useless, it'll be interesting to see what's next...

Looking at the San Antonio Rodeo lineup of musical acts makes me wonder what the hell happened to the Houston Live Stock Show and Rodeo.
It’s actually two wins in a row. They’re going for number three.

The latest leftwing BS poop bomb is that people are souring on consuming.
I visited 2 costco's today. At one, I could not find a parking space.
Looks like a wintry day again in Madison. What's with the orange cones on the ice? Highway construction, or ice fault lines?
That time that Trump nailed the "million dollar" football throw!!

That is, to be fair, not true. Her salary is paid out of the same pocket theirs is, which is the pocket filled with money taken from taxpayers.
so karen bass hired a consultant out of illinois, to handle reconstruction, surprise surprise,

I blame Al Sharpton’s buycott of Costco.

Nancy Mace and Marjorie Taylor Greene are smarter, prettier, and manifestly more sane than Maxine Waters.
Puppy Bowl XXI tomorrow!
I just discovered that non-citizens can receive the Kennedy Center Awards. That's nuts.

I notice with the 'Reply' function gone, that I can no longer 'Delete' a comment - that option has also disappeared - or, am I missing something?
Aggie, I see a little trash can next to the date/time of my comment. I assume you can use that to delete one.
@Mary Beth, Thanks - but Nope. All I see is Date and Time, no trash can. And if I hover over that, it shows 'comment permalink'
If I ever went to San Antonio, I would make an effort to see that moonlit pass by the Alamo, where I could see the moon in all its splendor.
