"Partner with Trump when he’s right—like on DEI."

That's point #3 on a 4-point list by Ruy Teixeira, in "Trump 2.0: A Survival Guide for Democrats" (Free Press).
DEI is of comparatively recent vintage and the programs are now indelibly associated with racial preferences, oppression hierarchies, ideological indoctrination, and language policing. Those aren’t American values at all.... Racial preferences are very, very unpopular and have been for a long time....
Most voters, especially working-class voters, believe, like Martin Luther King Jr., that people should “not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” A 2022 University of California Dornsife survey found that more than 90 percent of Americans agree that America should strive for color-blind tolerance. But many Democrats dismiss the idea of color blindness as either hopelessly naive or itself a racist dog-whistle.

And that fits so tightly with the Democrats' 2 favorite arguments: 1. You're dumb, and 2. You're racist. Which reminds me — the #1 item on Teixeira's 4-point list is: "Avoid name-calling."

I'm halfway through quoting all 4 items, so let me continue. #2 is "Moderate — starting with immigration." And #4 is "Embrace energy abundance."

Yeah, the Democrats cannot do these things. Not unless they get their own Trump. Someone extremely daring, charismatic, and powerful who barges in and reshapes the party around him. It could have been RFK Jr., but they used their grubby little ways to keep him off the ballot. And now who is out there?

Yuri Andropov, Konstantin Chernenko, but likely no Mikhail Gorbachev. Grubby little ways is all they got. And picking Ken Martin underscores that.

Deep blue California has repeatedly voted against racial preferences in state hiring and college admissions. They copied MLK/1960s race blind federal language and made it state law. Still, the DEI ideologues come back again and again seeking salvation. California's Asians point out that they were victims of written, official California racist policies in the early 20th century. Instituting racial preferences toay would mean they again become victims of racism, even as they work hard and perform exceptionally well in colleges (i.e., some "black and brown" people are different than others).

State-sponsored racism (DEI) has not won the popular vote in California despite 30 years of trying and multiple votes. Good luck passing DEI laws in Texas or nationally. Plans for salvation should be reserved for religions, as it failed with wealth and class in old-line Communist governments and has failed with race and sex/gender too.

You remind me of the situation in 2016. Both parties faced a reformer insurgency—the Dems from Sanders and the Reps from Trump. The Democrats successfully fought off their insurgent, the Republicans failed to fight off theirs.

And that is why the Republicans are winning and the Democrats are losing. The Democrats are mired in corrupt, sclerotic insider politics while the Republicans are run-through with dynamism.

He has indeed been trying to save them from themselves. They're having none of it. It's amazing to me that he hadn't been utterly cancelled - I guess he hasn't used up all the currency his "we're going to be a permanent majority, because we're on the side of the angels and we love people of color" thing afforded him. Even though after the election, he was desperately trying to tell them, "Guys! We can't say we love people of color and then tell Latinos and young Black men they're stupid and fascist!"

I can't think of a single Democrat currently who could compete with the new generation of Republicans that Trump has brought into prominence in his second term. They have absolutely no one like Vance, DeSantis, or Rubio, for example. And I had not given much thought to Rubio except he seems to have gotten off to a good start at State. I was skeptical about his appointment at first, but I have seen two interviews in the past week that won me over.

The Republicans are going to have a deep bench of capable people for 2028 and beyond. The Dems have no bench at all.

The Democrats love of climate hysteria is mystifying. They have been warning of doom for at least 30 years, yet none of their predictions have come true. Some are laughable - having to remove the signage at Glacier National Park stating that the glaciers would be gone by 2020. I recall reading Boston Globe stories in the 1990s that reported that the New England ski industry would be dead by the early 2000s for lack of snow. Now they reflexively utter climate change as the root cause of just about everything. It has lost all meaning, similar to calling their opponents fascists.

Now that I think about it, "Lord Jim" is a really on point reference. It was a European man who was hopelessly idealistic, and took over a naive tribe of natives on a remote island through his preaching of doing the honorable thing [we must take care of every soul on the planet if they show up at our door] and trusting others to respect it[nobody would lie for economic reasons] and do the right thing, [no man would ever falsely claim to be a woman just to get imprisoned with women and have female guards!] and he gets [Spoiler alert!] killed and the tribe destroyed the first time a guy shows up with a sword who didn't care about his morals.

Jaq said...

The problem with a "Democrat Trump" is that Trump's main source of power is just doing things that are very popular among the majority of voters, and Democrats can't do that, no matter how much their rank and file might approve, for example, of defending high value US working class jobs like auto-making or protecting US wages by limiting illegal competition from imported "migrants" who don't get the same labor protections, due to their status, as US workers.

One of the big lessons of the Europeans plagues was that limiting the supply of workers led to better wages for peasants. This is why the oligarchs, oooh, sorry, the correct term is "major donors to Democrats" want to flood the market in the US with workers and why they are screaming bloody murder as the flow is cut off!

"It will be inflationary! How will I ever afford my string of polo ponies and the dozen workers in the barn if I have to pay medical benefits, instead of just sending them to the ER, and —God forbid! overtime!"

This is the point where the Democratic iceberg breaks into pieces and starts to drift apart. TDS kept them united, while the Biden era revealed that they cannot be united (i.e., Israel vs. Gaza). The moderates and independents shifted to the Republicans, so the game's over.

Right now there's nothing that the Democrats can do all by themselves to recover their power because they childishly played "Whatever he does, do the opposite" with Trump instead of co-opting those of his popular positions that Democrats had held in recent memory (remember Rich Gephardt, the most "left-wing" of the Democrats in '88, being in favor of tariffs?).
But that doesn't mean they'll actually stay out of power long. It all depends on whether the Republicans revert to mindlessly defending giant corporations in their abuse and exploitation of normal people. If they do, than the (stupid) "BILLIONAIRES!!!ELEVENTY!" screeching by Democrats that normies are ignoring will suddenly gain traction. Republicans need it beaten into their heads that "Big Business" sucks just as bad as "Big Government," and that they were elected to bring BOTH to heel. Taking the side of insurance companies, big tech, or big telecomm will alienate the populists who right now are Trump's strongest supporters.
One of the best things Trump could do to cement his populist support would be to use anti-trust powers to break up Tech monopolies or oligopolies, block mergers, restrict private equity from buying up whole sectors of small business, and seriously investigate and when appropriate punish anti-competitive behavior by chains and franchises against local small businesses (much of this anti-competitive behavior is facilitated by banks and especially credit-card companies).
Over the past 30 years the economy has gotten over-consolidated and therefore unresponsive to consumers and often flat-out abusive or exploitive to both consumers and workers. Trump has MASSIVE powers through the FTC, and he should use them. He should also break up ALL the communications oligopolies, going back to the rule that radio and television stations must be owned locally.
If Trump can get the Republicans to realize that the only way they win is as the party of the Middle Class--which should include everyone who works full time at a private-sector job--standing against the top/bottom coalition of the Democrats, he might get that slot on Mount Rushmore he covets.
But I doubt that GOPe Republicans (who are not just metaphorically stupid, but actually low-IQ) will be willing to able to avoid backsliding.
