"[Chantal] Kreviazuk, who is from Winnipeg, Manitoba, also wrote the phrase 'that only us command' with mascara on her left hand."

"She posted a picture of that on her Instagram with emojis of a Canadian flag and a flexed muscle. 'I just put it on there so if I ever had a moment and I kind of froze, I would be able to look at my hand and see it,' Kreviazuk said. 'I’d love to see people sort of get inspired and catch the fire and say their heart more in their art. ... Sometimes you just got to speak the truth in your art and it’s awesome. That’s what it should be about.'..."

From "Singer of Canadian anthem at 4 Nations Face-Off changes lyric to protest Trump’s 51st state remarks" (AP).

The official lyrics begin: "O Canada! Our home and native land! True patriot love in all of us command."

That is, the homeland commands true patriot love in all of us.

The changed lyric was "O Canada! Our home and native land! True patriot love that only us command."

So it is no longer the homeland commanding love. It is "only us" commanding love. There are several problems (aside from the problem of changing the words of the anthem):

1. It is ungrammatical. It should be "only we command."

2. Ironically, "us," used as a subject in the clause, when seen in print, looks like U.S. — the very entity you are trying to fend off.

3. You're no longer saying the country commands love, which means the country has a quality that inherently causes us to love it — true patriot love. You are saying we, the people of Canada, are doing the commanding. We are commanding love for country, as opposed to the country inspires love from us. You've diminished the country and diminished the love.

4. I get it that you're trying to say only the people of Canada have power over Canada, but that is a step down from saying we love Canada.

5. You seem to be trying to say that "only us" command the country, but you've said "only us" command love, so that has the people commanding the people to love. You're commanding each other.

6. If only Canadians command Canada, why don't you slough off that King of yours?

ADDED: Congratulations, Canada, on winning the big game in your big sport.

AND: If I was going to write with eye makeup, I'd use an eyeliner pencil, not mascara. Hard to picture writing with that scrubby little brush.

I understand what Trump's doing, but we neither need another state with the politics of California nor an economy worse than Mississippi.

The French version of Ô Canada is a whole different kettle of fish, with references to the arm which carries the sword and the cross to various glorious exploits.

I also thought it was silly to change the lyrics of your national anthem to protest the notion of someone else taking over your country. You are literally changing your country in response to someone else, rather than standing firm in your commitment to your country's own identity.

Not a single American there noticed the difference. We know, “Oh Canada” and hockey fans might know “Our home and ancient land…”

So what is Trump doing, really? Pointing out that Canada is without leadership, that its Papier-mâché prime minister (Castreaux) shut down the Parliament that would have ejected him from his position, and forced elections - rather than waiting it out for another 9 months? I think Trump is just pressing for elections, sooner, so that a conservative doesn't inherit the bigger mess.

Canadian takes a knee to rhetorical flourish. But, seriously, George "Fentanyl" Floyd syndrome is a common cause between neighbors and lives.

Canadian here. I don't like what Kreviasuk did with the anthem. That being said the original lyrics are actually "in all thy sons command". The Canadian government changed it to "us" a number of years ago because "sons" was not inclusive enough. Once the government starts changing the lyrics why shouldn't Kreviasuk. Canadians do not hold any traditions sacred anymore. The concept of the "51st state" was born out of our own mascara.

Emotional patriotism is ok, but it does not pay the bills.

Chantal Kreviazuk?

If we don't get Canada and can't stop the Russian-Ukrainian war and can't resettle Gaza, we could at least resettle the Ukrainians with their relatives in Canada (or the Canadians with their relatives in Ukraine). Problem solved (I'm not sure which problem, but Mission Accomplished anyway).

BTW, the earlier version was "True patriot love in all thy sons command." Parliament amended it in 2018 to get rid of the sexism. But wait. Before that it as "True patriot love thou dost in us command." Parliament amended the English text several times. The French remains as it was written in 1880. Gotta love those Frenchies.

What I want to know is whether Canada is the Canadians "home and native land" or whether they stole the land from "First Nation?" First Nation is what a good virtue signaller would call the tribal entities up there.
And here is an example of Trudeau acknowledging that the Haida nation own a part of Canada>
Today, the President of the Haida Nation, Gaagwiis Jason Alsop, the Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, and the Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs and Minister responsible for the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency, Gary Anandasangaree, announced the signing of the Chiix̲uujin / Chaaw K̲aawgaa “Big Tide (Low Water)” Haida Title Lands Agreement. The Agreement includes Canada’s recognition of Haida Aboriginal title to lands on Haida Gwaii and marks a significant milestone in the journey to reconciliation."
As I see it, we have some tribes, too, such as the Mohawk nation, with claims on so-called "Canadian" land such as Hochelaga, a former Mohawk stronghold, which the Canadians call Montreal.

The previous and most widely used lyrics before our nation went woke was "in all thy sons command". In this instance "true patriot love" was in the hearts of the soldiers under the nation's command.

How about Oi, Canada?

I read that as "True patriot love commands only us, not you other folks in other countries." Is that true? Canadians don't seem that nationally conscious when they aren't angry at the US.

Back when we were under 21 but the drinking age was 18 in Montreal we used to drive up and look for true patriot love. Worked out sometimes…

I’d consider also taking Saskatchewan, if they would agree to a new name I could spell without looking it up.

Guess she got us with that one. If only anyone had noticed...
But the AP is on the story. They just can't show up at the White House to ask about it.

Joni Mitchell’s hometown was Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
Imagine spelling that out as a child.

Boy, would that be on-brand for Canada.

Every time I hear "Peace, order, and good government" I can't help but laugh.

Christopher B said...

So she believes the people of Canada have sovereignty over their country? I wonder how far she thinks that extends.

Was it just me or was the horribly bad, like that chick who sang the anthem in Goon. Well that was borderline treasonous, and a disgrace to our nation and its proud and storied history. My father didn't kick the Nazis'... and the puck drops!

Let's get real here. If Canada had been part of the US in 2024, Trump would NOT be President. Neither would Kamala. I think my money would have been on the late President Biden.
I like Canada. I like the Canadians I've known. I had a Canadian client who told me that their daughter's aspiration was to be President of the USA.
But they aren't Americans. You want to know how I know? When traveling in Europe, when a Canadian shows up, they call themselves "north Americans". Not "Canadians".
Canadians DON'T share our history. When the American colonies broke away from England, Canada stuck with the "old country" (I guess mostly to keep the French in line). Does Trump really want to bring the Quebecois into our federal union? I don't think so. (If someone here speaks French, please translate "I don't thinks so" into French. Thanks)

Canadian here... I agree wholeheartedly with BtheNorth: The government of the day keeps changing the lyrics of our national anthem to appease... someone, I assume. I can't keep track. But if the government can so blithely discard decades of precedent, so can Chantal.

But jeez... try to stay on key. She was terrible. And completely forgettable. At least the singer for the US anthem could actually sing.

Je croix que non.
The Québecois are ambivalent about being part of Canada, so it's unlikely they'd be any more sanguine about being Yanks.
