A Trump news conference is going on now... a lot going on.

I'm reading the NYT live updating. Excerpt:
Today underscores the overlap between Trump’s businesses and his government coming into focus. In addition to his Dubai partner announcing investments in the United States, Trump’s son and three incoming government officials are on a trip to Greenland, which Trump has expressed for years an interest in the U.S. acquiring....

Underscoring the overlap. Just don't overscore the underlap.

Trump is coming off fairly angrily in this news conference. Aides have for weeks asserted that he’s much calmer and happier. But the looming legal issues seem to be on his mind...

Later:

This appearance is a mini-rally for Trump at this point....

More seriously:

An extraordinary moment: Trump refuses to rule out using military force to reclaim the Panama Canal....

AND: The last thing he said was: "When I get into office, all hell is going to break loose."

Maybe this means Biden will give a Press Conference too. LOL.

JAORE said...

Just like all those times Biden stood before a hostile press and took any and all questions, answered in full and.... oh wait.

Dixcus said...

Some Idiot Reporter: "Do you think Mark Zuckerberg and Meta are responding to the threats you've been making recently."

"Yes, I think so. I hope so." - Donald Trump, trying unsuccessfully to keep those massive steel balls in his pants.

Leland said...

I think you meant all those times Harris stood before a hostile press and took any and all questions, answered in full and… oh wait. Hillary Clinton? No….

David53 said...

What a contrast.

Iman said...

Biden should gtfo before he causes damage that can’t be repaired. The list of the ruinous actions taken by him and his puppeteers continues to expand.

Leland said...

The Press doesn’t couch Biden’s actions as threats. Yet, the offshore oil and gas industry will have to respond to Biden’s executive order (assuming Biden was fully capable of mentally giving any order) that restricts offshore exploration. Makers of Hot Water Heaters will have to respond to other EOs restricting how they are manufactured based on EPA guidance rather than new legislation.

I hope so.
To save our country - the corrupt pedo money whore liar left must be brought to its corrupt knees.

"Trump is coming off fairly angrily in this news conference."

I was listening to it live and that is complete and utter bullshit.

Wince said...

"Trump is coming off fairly angrily in this news conference."

The expression I'd use is "calm dismay" when talking about lawfare and Biden intentionally damaging the country even on the way out the door.

PM said...

He'll finish these 4 years, do 'fantastic things' then have his own talk show and do most of the talking. A gifted monologuist with a flair for digression.

Ann Althouse said...

4 years from now, he'll be giving his last press conference as a President of the United States (if he is fortunate enough to escape assassins and impeachers), and he'll be touting his achievements. I hope he'll have great achievements — including the kind of achievements even the naysayers will celebrate. Clearly, he believes he should go down in history as one of the greatest Presidents. But many naysayers hate his idea of greatness. Imagine if we take over the Panama Canal and Greenland... and Canada. Will everyone love him then? Obviously not!

Quaestor said...

Only a president of a Biden--like mien would rule out using military force to reclaim the Panama Canal. Supposed the Panamanian government denied our forces access to the Canal, a violation of the agreement the feckless fool Jimmy Carter signed when he foolishly relinquished American control over the Canal Zone. What would America do? Meekly submit? Cripple our naval strength? Abandon our Pacific allies? Or would we use force to reclaim our rights to the Panama Canal?

"An extraordinary moment," says the New York Times, and it is. In thirteen days we will at last have a President of the United States with the wisdom to understand his duties, the fortitude to faithfully execute them, and the balls to tell the world what his duties might entail. That's extraordinary given the pattern set by the likes of nearly every president and would-be chief executive we've been cursed with since Ronald Reagan left office.

Mikey NTH said...

We will have a president once more who can have a press conference.

Quaestor said...

I'm certain the NYT did not intend "extraordinary moment" to imply anything obvious to the politically cognizant or forthright, but instead brutally shocking to the likes of the moronic harridans of "The View".

Freder Frederson said...

Imagine if we take over the Panama Canal and Greenland... and Canada. Will everyone love him then? Obviously not!

Short of actual military invasion, how exactly will he achieve this. His complaints about being ripped off by Panama are outright lies, neither the majority of Canada or the people of Greenland have the least interest in becoming part of the U.S. Canada and Greenland might not resist violently, but re-colonizing the Panama Canal would inevitably lead to a long term guerilla war, which would attract all kinds of revolutionaries from throughout Latin America.

Iman said...

Well said, Quaestor.

Freder Frederson said...

Oh good, maybe we will go back to funding death squads in Central America by selling arms to Iran.

MadisonMan said...

Agreed. He was not angry. Forthright is a better term IMO.

Howard said...

Love him or hate him, he speaks directly and he has a plan. I really like the idea of massive new construction of power plants with data centers right next door. Got to go nuclear though the gas isn't going to last forever.

Freder Frederson said...

Another lie that Trump keeps repeating. He did not win by "millions and millions" of votes. He won by under 2 million votes. Why doesn't Althouse point these facts out?

AZ Bob said...

If Canada joined the USA, Democrats would never lose another election. We should be offering New York to Canada and California to Mexico. Republicans would never lose another election then.

n.n said...

Democracy enjoys a commuted sentence with Trump. Hopefully, his successor will also acknowledge the viability of speech to the fitness of our Republican form of government.

Kakistocracy said...

And we were concerned about Biden's mental health?

I wonder if he’s ever thought about saying the second thing that comes into his head?

It’s going to be a long 4 years!

Wow. I mean, an actual press conference where reporters ask cogent questions that seem, on the face of it, to be unscripted - getting answers that seem, on the face of it, to be representative of actual thinking. Jazzy.

"An extraordinary moment: Trump refuses to rule out using military force to reclaim the Panama Canal...."

The reporter actually asked if Trump would rule out military force or economic pressure to get the Panama canal. But all the headlines say is that Trump said that he won't rule out military force.

Laughing Fox said...

Feder Frederson worries about the US under Trump "re-colonizing" the part of Panama that holds the Canal. Does FF think the current rulers of Panama are mostly the descendants of the pre-Columbus inhabitants?

Original Mike said...

"Why doesn't Althouse point these facts out?"

Why bother. She has you.

Dogma and Pony Show said...

The talk about statehood seems absurd to me. What doesn't seem absurd is as follows:

1. Acquiring sovereignty over Greenland as a territory of the U.S. by buying off the rather small population of that island, while invoking the Monroe Doctrine to denounce Denmark's claim to it;
2. Renegotiating the terms of the Panama Canal treaty to give the U.S. ultimate military/naval control over its use, and to ensure that U.S. ships aren't being overcharged, while still preserving Panama's right to operate it and derive toll revenues; and
3. Negotiating a further economic and security treaty with Canada.

Freder Frederson said...

The real question is what basis does Trump have for spreading these lies. Oh, guess what, it was a tweet, post on Facebook, and some other social media sites that the author posted as satire and parody.

ron winkleheimer said...

"The talk about statehood seems absurd to me."

Its just hyperbole.

Freder Frederson said...

I listened to the entire dumpster fire of a press conference. I can't even count the lies he told. But perhaps the most horrifying thing he said is that he will not rule out the use of military force against two allies (one a member of NATO) to wrest control of the Panama Canal and Greenland. I guess we can take small solace in the fact that he ruled out the use of force to make Canada the 51st state (which btw has aboot the same population as California). And yes, I am making fun of Canadian accents by deliberately misspelling "about".

Dave D said...

2,300,000 and some change votes, per AP/Google. That is literally millions of votes. Why does the left fail to talk in fact/truth?

Freder Frederson said...

Unlike Arizona, which receives about $2.26 for every dollar sent to the federal government, California and New York send more to the federal government than they receive.

Freder Frederson said...

Actually, in retrospect, the worst thing he revealed is that he is having his own negotiations over the hostages in Gaza. Does he think he is president already?

Merny11 said...

I couldn’t stop smiling during the press conference. It just felt so damn good to finally have a REAL President again. And his remarks about J6 were perfect.

In contrast, I give you Cookie and Howard, both of whom seem to be able to actually respond and partake in some give and take.

Field Marshall Freder: "I listened to the entire dumpster fire of a press conference."

LOL

That's right Freder. Its all a "dumpster fire"...which is why the world is clawing its way into MAL and world and business leaders are deferring to Trump and not ibam...er...biden.

Freder, like LLR-democratical Rich and Inga and victoria are having a bit of a rough day given the demands for full inquiries regarding the left/dem/labour-islamic supremacist pakistani mass gang rapes.

All on top of the Nw Soviet democraticals open support for pro-grooming policies in the US.

Gonna be a rough 4 years for these cats given they really cant go back to the russki collusion hoax anymore and their "fine people" hoax is also never coming back.

Tsk tsk tsk

Perhaps group therapy rates will be made available to them.

No, I am claiming that Trump is a pathological liar.

Drago said...

Field Marshall Freder: "Oh good, maybe we will go back to funding death squads in Central America by selling arms to Iran."

Lets just hand over billions in new, advanced US weapons to the Taliban!

I'll bet Freder doesn't even remember how many different Boland Amendments there were, what periods of time each covered, and what each one allowed as the New Soviet Democraticals were sucking up to Ortega and the Soviets in the 80's.

Drago said...

Field Marshall Freder: "And where the fuck did renaming the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America come from?"

A reiteration of some long ago surrendered concepts: US dominance of this hemisphere, shots across the bow to Freder's ChiCom allies a la Monroe Doctrine, a harkening back to Jefferson and the Louisiana Purchase....all messages to the New Soviet Democraticals at home and ChiComs abroad that there is a new sheriff in town.

Naturally, this upsets Freder greatly.

Because of course it does.

I just don't bother, cause I don't care how it looks. I'm not a web developer, but I have put together internal websites using php, apache, and mysql. Mostly for tracking bugfixes before the cheapskates at the company I worked for would pay for a commercial software package.

Which is why Freder called it the WORST thing about the presser. Because somebody is actually doing something to get our hostages back. And we just can't have that.

The Monroe Doctrine doesn't apply to Greenland. The Monroe Doctrine was written (by “Monroe”) to apply only to new European colonies in America, not to existing colonies—and Denmark's claim to Greenland dates back about a thousand years.

Nancy Reyes said...

before reporting on Trumpieboy's press conferences, you need to read the Art of the Deal. Lots of hyperbole as a negotiating tactic.
As to using military force in Greenland and Panama canal: This is about China moving in and taking over these places. First China offers help, then they loan you money, build what you want, but don't hire locals, but bring in lots of military age men to run what they build. And then if you can't pay the loan back, they take it over. They do this all over the place.

If Trump had said that those "millions and millions" of votes came from "all across the fruited plain", Freder would call that a lie because a substantial part of the plain is not fruited.

Distractions and inaction, incompetence, corruption and melodrama are going to be the hallmark of his presidency

I thought all of those adjectives were TM'ed by Biden.

Query: if the Trump administration also works to have those same adjectives apply, does that open Trump up to a trademark violation from the Biden family? The juice has to keep flowing somehow once the big guy is out of office...

MountainMan said...

Why do we keep talking about popular votes? Presidents are not elected by popular vote. They are elected by the Electoral College. There is not even a requirement that the electors must be selected by popular vote. The Framers wanted nothing to do with a popular vote for President. The only vote that was recorded in the Congress on Monday was Trump 312, Harris 226. That is a significant margin in favor of Trump and the only vote that matters.
