@amystaceycurtis Singing Simon and Garfunkel’s “America” to heal my brain 🧠 In 2017, I sustained a brain injury caused by never treated Lyme disease. My first symptom was a psychosis that would make me see horrific images nonstop 24 hours a day for 22 months. The psychosis could only be slowed with 16 treatments of electroconvulsive therapy. Then it took two more years for this psychosis to completely go away. About six or seven months into the psychosis I lost all control of the muscles in my body including the muscles in my face. I lost my ability to speak, stricken with a severe palsy and sometimes complete nonverbalism, as if the cord between my brain and my mouth had been cut. After 15 months of schizophrenia-diagnosing doctors, two psychiatric wards, and eight antipsychotic drugs, it was finally determined by a naturopath that I had had Lyme disease some time in my past and that hit it had attacked my brain. By then it was too late to treat the Lyme disease; it was all about strengthening my brain and getting my ability back. Two years ago, after progressing from wheelchair, to walker, to cane, back to my feet I was still struggling with my speech when I intuited that playing the ukulele could help by doing multiple things at the same time as a regular practice. Within a week of playing the ukulele I was capable of perfect-for-me speech unless overstimulated. I practice an hour every day as a self-prescribed occupational therapy. Over the past two years, my speech has steadily improved even when palseyed. So the practice of playing while simultaneously singing did her good, but there is nothing magic about the particular tune? Kinda disappointing.

Over the years I've seen the statement that making music uses and coordinates more parts of the brain towards a single task than anything else we do - and have never seen a counter argument. That seems to be going on here with the musical speech better than just speech. There's a similar effect I've seen lots of times where an oldster singing brings back the personality to the joy of family members joining in. Somehow being bolstered by a bunch of other parts of the brain allows a weakened part to function better.

Love that song and her rendition of it. Made me tear up, even. I’m a wuss.

Quite touching. Not a bad voice; I would like to have heard it before the brain impediments. ...Or maybe, god willing, a year from now when she has recovered.

BTW, Lyme disease was created and accidentally released by the US government. You're welcome, and keep those tax dollars coming!

Wow, so many things going on here-resilience, perseverance, hope, love, rebirth. To name just a few…

Thanks for posting.

For Thanksgiving we've been listening to a (good) premade playlist that includes this song and a couple of Dylan tunes. I have my own personal theme today with Althouse's posts, apparently.

I never expected to be so moved by a TikTok video.

Not all tiktoks are vapid time-wasters. Nice to see an inspiring entry.

wow, indeed.
Lyme disease can be that debilitating? yikes.

That's a great song, always loved it. Made me want to hit the road. It was genius to use in a Bernie Sanders ad, dammit.

Anyway, I should get my uke out again. I need something besides this.

First Ren, and then Amy. I didn't know Lyme disease could be so bad. I really enjoyed her performance.

There are many tick borne diseases, with Lyme's disease being just one. If you have any kind of tick bite don't ignore it. You need treatment. Soon.....

George Harrison was known to have travelled with ukes which he would invite folks to play and sing along with him.
I recently heard this Led Zeppelin instrumental version of "Going to California".
Mandolins and guitar quite pleasant,

Interesting, considering that Otzi the iceman is the earliest known case.

Not exactly the same thing, but I used to play with a drummer who had a considerable stutter. The stutter would completely go away when he sang.

I got Lyme disease a year ago. Never saw the tick. Had a red spot on my thigh but never got the ring rash. I got concerned when I started getting arthritis of the jaw. Went to a Rapid Response and got a prescription for Doxycyclene a very mild antibiotic. Cleared it right up. If I hadn't got the arthritis I probably would have ignored it and been in BIG trouble. Cost about $15.

Yeah, Jupiter, that's the ticket! (Got any peer-reviewed sources...chump?)

Interesting. Before I clicked on the jump, I figured this might be RFKJr talking about his brain worm.

I think they’re pretty magical:

“So I looked at the scenery, she read her magazine
And the moon rose over an open field
… "Kathy, I'm lost", I said, though I knew she was sleeping
I'm empty and aching and I don't know why
Counting the cars on the New Jersey Turnpike
They've all come to look for America”

When she goes from speaking to playing the ukulele, I was so invested, hoping the singing would be good. Fantastic payoff.

See the comments under YouTube "America" ... example.

Simon told Dick Cavet that the melody was taken from Bach’s St. Matthew Passion. Listen to Bach and it’s obvious. I always liked the song America and now that I listen to Bach more than pop music I can see why.

Mel Tillis the country singer was the same way. Grok explains it with, "This phenomenon is not uncommon among people who stutter, where the flow of singing bypasses the usual speech patterns that trigger stuttering."

I took guitar lessons when I was a teenager. But when I tried to play some Simon & Garfunkel songs, I discovered that Paul Simon's guitar arrangements were incredibly complex and difficult. The best I could do was learn the chords and strum along.

I’ve lost some ability to speak and my childhood speech impediments are back. It is very effective speech therapy to sing, or even howl with the dogs. Luckily, everything howls around here. I didn’t know a cow could make so much noise.

But I’ll be damned before I pick up an oboe again.

I know he isn't particularly popular around here but Ross Douthat's Lyme disease book is an excellent read; don't remember any Simon and Garfunkel, however.
