"Pluralism... is about recognizing that, in a democracy, power comes from forging alliances and building coalitions, and making room in those coalitions not only for the woke, but the waking."

Said Barack Obama, quoted in "In First Post-Election Speech, Obama Calls for ‘Forging Alliances and Building Coalitions’/'Purity tests are not a recipe for long-term success,' the former president said in the speech in Chicago" (NYT).
For Mr. Obama’s friends, he said, talk of bridging differences in a bitterly divided country seemed like an academic exercise.

“It felt far-fetched, even naïve, especially since, as far as they were concerned, the election proved that democracy’s down pretty far on people’s priority lists,” he said. But, he said, “it’s easy to give democracy lip service when it delivers the outcomes we want,” adding, “it’s when we don’t get what we want that our commitment to democracy is tested.”...

There's a special meaning to "democracy" in Obama's world, it seems — something like: It's democracy when we win. It seems to me that the election proved that we have a democracy and the people delivered their opinion. Obama seems to be saying that democracy is a background value, not the process of going through an election, and when that value is properly in place, people vote against Donald Trump.

Speaking of words, I wonder if "the waking" will catch on. It sounds like the title of a zombie movie.

ADDED: The meaning of "the waking" is like that special meaning of democracy. It's not a process that might go anywhere. It's a process toward a particular outcome. Those who are not progressing toward the prescribed outcome all outside of the process of democracy or waking. The "pluralism" is illusory.

ALSO: "Woke" and "waking" use the metaphor of sleep. When you are asleep, you have no consciousness or the illusion of dreams, which could be highly individualistic and include all sorts of unreal, unlikely, and impossible things. If you wake up, you have only one place to go: reality.

His post-election speech?!? Did he run for office somewhere? I suppose fits-the-suit Johnny Bravo is the closest thing they have to an elder statesman but that isn’t enough to be calling for anything.

The worst thing that happened to their Democracy is that people woke up.

They need to put the bear back to sleep and they know it, but I don't think they can.

Their spokespeople are really, really disliked: Rachel Maddow? The View? Whoppie "It's not rape, rape" Goldberg? Anderson Cooper? Joy Behar? Joy Reid?

They gotta get these horribly disliked people OFF of television. Their negatives are OFF the chart. They don't influence anybody. All they do is create a constant stream of negative news about Democrats. Get RID of these people.

Maybe he is speaking to Michelle O, per their known relationship tensions? Quoting from Michelle's "fiery" DNC speech in support of the lead-with-pop-concerts and $1B squanderer Kamala earlier this year:

For years, Donald Trump did everything in his power to try to make people fear us.

His limited and narrow view of the world made him feel threatened by the existence of two hardworking, highly educated, successful people who also happened to be Black.
...
It’s his same old con: doubling down on ugly, misogynistic, racist lies as a substitute for real ideas and solutions that will actually make people’s lives better.

You see, gutting our health care, taking away our freedom to control our bodies, the freedom to become a mother through IVF, like I did— those things are not going to improve the health outcomes of our wives, mothers, and daughters.

Shutting down the Department of Education, banning our books —none of that will prepare our kids for the future.

Demonizing our children for being who they are and loving who they love — that doesn’t make anybody’s life better.

Here's a simple academic exercise. When you are running the Federal Emergency Management Agency, don't pick and choose who you'll provide aid based on whether they will vote for you. It divides the country and makes it seem like you are only in it for the power to control others.

Amexpat said...

The term "waking" is very condescending. It implies that you have a higher moral awareness and should be patient and tolerant of those who have not reached your heightened state. That's not a good starting point for Dems to reconnect with their lost base.

Instead they should humbly engage in open dialougue with those that disagree with them and be open to the possibility that not everything they beleive is right.

I doubt that will happen.

Democrats love talking down to us. As do many Republican political types. Obama still thinks he is in charge, leading the leftist brigade.
Democrats could use some common sense, moderate types. But Trump, who used to be a moderate Democrat, already invited them to MAGA.

In Plato's Apology of Socrates, Socrates says he has tried to teach his fellow Athenians, like a gadfly stinging a horse. It's flattering to teachers and intellectuals to think they are always waking people up, but how does either party benefit from this? The fly might draw blood in order to survive, but it might also make the horse mad, which Socrates says is what happened to him. Being awake isn't the same as learning. People who are not allowed to sleep might hallucinate and become violent, just before they die.

This didn't start with Obama, just like demonizing Republicans didn't start with Trump. It's a rehashed and reheated version of "we didn't fool the rubes", pulled from a microwave turned up to 11 by making it about 'democracy'. Not surprising that it's an unpalatable plate of garbage. (A lot of us having been saying from the moment Democrats started using the phrase that the emphasis has always been on 'our', not 'democracy'.)

And that quote from Michelle is the rhetorical successor to Walter Mondale's "Mr. Reagan will raise taxes and so will I. He won't tell you. I just did."

It was during Obama’s second term that the Democrats — presumably at Obama’s behest — deliberately ran white working class voters (who bitterly cling to their guns and their religion) out of the Democrat Party. Once Trump made the ecnomic case to Hispanics and black workng men (and their wives) that their economic interests aligned more with white working men and women than with the credentialed (never call them “educated”) snots who openly look down on people without a college education, the whole thing was going to be all over.

From where I sit it was Barack Obama who developed a strategy of slicing and dicing the American electorate into identity groups based on superficial things like skin color and whether their last name is Hispanic, then set the groups at each others’ throats. Trump won by emphasizing the commonality of interests in public safety and the economy.

An important point made by Mike Benz w/Joe Rogan this week was that the Gov’t reacted to Trump’s first election win by changing the fundamental definition of “Democracy“ from a consensus of The People to a consensus of Institutions — AKA scientific experts, the media, NGOs, Think Tanks, corporations, etc. When Democrats like Obama talk about "Democracy" that's what they're thinking of. A nation of the people, by the people, and for the people never enters into the equation.

Very similar to the ideological divide Thomas Sowell describes in his Conflict of Visions (1987), between the "unconstrained" (mostly left) and the "constrained" (mostly conservative) visions of the world.

The unconstrained vision speaks directly in terms of desired results, the constrained vision in terms of process characteristics considered conducive to desired results, but not directly or without many unhappy side effects, which are accepted as part of a trade-off.

"Democracy" is a halo word that people apply to what they want. On the left in particular it may not have much to do with what a majority of the people happen to want, but rather with implementing some vision of progress. There is assumed to be some subjugated population that is served by an elite vanguard, and as the vanguard wins and puts its agenda into effect "democracy" is advanced. The "subjugated population" may include foreigners, trees, or the planet.

The right doesn't share that Leninist politics or will to power, but they may have assumption that the "silent majority" is always on the side of traditional values or conservative principles that isn't always true. It sticks around no matter how many times it's been disproven, but it hasn't justified the kind of elitist authoritarianism that we currently see on the left.

Liberals and progressives who hate Erdoğan for comparing democracy to a trolley that you ride until you get to your destination and then get off, have a similar conception of democracy, except for them the ride doesn't end. You're on that trolley and it takes you wherever the driver wants to go, and you don't have any say in the matter.

Wrong.

Multiculturalism emphasizes our differences to the detriment of what we have in common. This leads to "Stay in your lane" and Balkanization.
Then there's Plualism, which emphasizes what we have in common and tolerates our differences. As Americans, we used to believe in pluralism so much that we put it on on money.

And "forging alliances and building coalitions" is basic politics, regardless of the type of government. Both Yorkists and Lancastrians were coalitions after all.

Kamala Harris got quite close despite not having a Clinton or Obama-like charismatic connection with voters. Competitive primaries in 2028 will identify such a candidate and the missing piece for victory will be in place. The Democratic program has mainstream appeal that the Republicans will be missing.

Fascism was and is always the wrong word to describe American homegrown far right politics, which have been home-grown since before the American revolution. Illiberal politics built on racial hate, dislike of foreigners and "the other," and populist grievance runs in the American political bloodstream. Read David Pietrusza's book on the 1936 election "Roosevelt Sweeps Nation" to read about the creatures who populated the primaries in that notable year. You beat this kind of politics with something better -- which is why those competitive primaries are so important. Democrats must break the hold that the alliance of small constituency activists have with the billion-dollar donor-funded Washington establishment over choosing Democratic nominees and let Democrats out in the states select presidential nominees -- most likely from the ranks of governors or other figures representative of the broad party, not the narrow party.

The Democrats are likely heading for a 2026 landslide year greater than either 2006 or 2018. Democrats in Congress should take a General Grant-like position and say that they're prepared to fight it out on this line all summer long--over everything. Richmond is in sight and this generation of Johnny Rebs has no General Lee at their head. Don't confuse the rabble with genuine rebels. Hate never raised anyone's standard of living.

This is not the awakening they were looking for, more what they feared.

“One way to read Trump’s second victory in three elections is that the movement for a post-American America with a successor ideology and post-Judeo Christian cultural and ethical foundation aimed at fundamentally changing American society has reached its sell-by date. Its social base, in a deeply dysfunctional upper-middle class, is too weak, too faddish, and too narcissistic for the hard work of remaking society. Too many of its concrete proposals are too unpopular or too unrealistic to bear fruit.”

“The specter of a radically transformed America that hates Christianity, sees no difference between women and men, actively discriminates against whites and especially white men in the name of equity, and seeks to regulate every economic and social interaction with a puritanical fervor not seen since Oliver Cromwell has angered and frightened enough Americans to create a mass movement of resistance centered on the person of our new president-elect.”
