"In a world of steel eyed death, and men who are fighting to be warm/Come in, Walz said, I'll give you shelter from the storm."

Speaking of after the storm.

FEMA ordered its agents after Hurricane Milton to avoid houses with Trump signs in the yard.

Of course, now that they've been caught and the evidence is being leaked out, they've fired the employee responsible.

Just kidding. They didn't fire him. Just moved him to a different office. Like they do with bad cops who entrap citizens.

Bob may not have coined the term "shelter from the storm",, but unless Shakespeare used it or it's found in the King James version of the Book I'll give him primacy of usage. It's the best ever divorce song bar none.

I also thought, surely the phrase is much older than that.

ChatGPT told me Walt Whitman used the phrase in "Leaves of Grass", specifically in "Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking". I could not find it. (ChatGPT might be a liar, liar, pants on fire AI.)

Gemini tells me that while Whitman had similar imagery, he did not use that exact phrase and it was Dylan who first brought it to public attention.

Grok credits Dylan but also says, "there's a mention on X where a user suggests that John F. Kennedy might have popularized the phrase." Some rando on the internet isn't a source. I can't find any usage of it by JFK, the closest hits I get are about bomb shelters.

(I had originally tried just doing a Google search and got nothing but pages and pages of results that only mentioned Dylan, so I thought an AI would do better. Searching for '"Shelter from the storm" -Dylan' in Google shows sites for animal and DV shelters.)

I did find a hymn from the 1800s that uses "A shelter in the time of storm" and I expect there are other similar uses, just none that I can find that use the precise phrase "shelter from the storm".

If you have a quotation using that exact phrase from another source, I'd appreciate knowing what it is.

Bob doesn't avoid clichés. (Another one is "simple twist of fate.") He just makes his use of the cliché into the one that sticks in your head. That's how all sorts of random things bring me (and Meade) back to Bob.

The Democratic party is obsessed with promoting abortion and racial identity. It's hard to believe they could lose an election with that platform.

In the hymn "To the haven of thy breast" by Charles Wesley, 1742, 4th verse:
First, and last in me perform
The work thou hast begun,
_Be my shelter from the storm_,
My shadow from the sun;
Sprinkle still the mercy-seat,
And bring thy Father’s anger down,
Screen me, Jesus, from the heat,
And terror of his frown.

Apparently the (California resident) 22yo daughter of (Washington resident) progressive friends of ours called her parents Wednesday-ish , sobbing about how she no longer had any rights.

Democrats, look to your souls. What you've done to your own people is unconscionable, just to cling - bitterly - to a narrative of powerlessness that disguises your dominance in government, academia, entertainment, finance...

You don't have to do it this way. You could concentrate on legislative efforts on the states where you can't dismember a fetus the day before the mother goes into labor, if that's your depressing and horrific hill to die on. Or you could demand of your own people some minimal level of personal responsibility, such as deciding over the course of 3-4 months whether to elect to end a pregnancy. But no, you decided that scaring ignorant young women into hysterics was somehow a moral imperative.

I hate this issue. How can deciding whether to kill your fetus be a correct proxy for "bodily autonomy"? Someone referred to Schrodinger's minority in the "Hispanics are apparently white supremacists too" thread above; a human fetus is, to Democrats, Schrodinger's human being, I guess - "my baby" when wanted, "the pregnancy" or "fetal tissue" or "a clump of cells" when inconvenient.

In light of the way Walz brutally locked Minnesota down during Covid, it might start out as Dylan and Shelter from the Storm but it quickly morphs into the Eagles and Hotel California:

Last thing I remember, I was running for the door
I had to find the passage back to the place I was before
"Relax, " said the night man, "We are programmed to receive
You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave."

Weird that he didn't protect the citizens of Minneapolis as their businesses and homes were burned to the ground, alongside their own district police HQ. He was too busy kneeling to the rioters back then.
I often ask, Who's going to protect us from our protectors?

One missed opportunity by all republican candidates and pundits has been missed all these years. If you fervently believe that you have an inalienable right to what happens to your body, why did these same people force Covid vaccinations on many in our country or lose your job? And, even went as far as to lie about the details about the vaccine both in efficacy and in risk(more young athletes died of sudden cardiac failure in 2023 than in the previous 50 years combined).

But not men?

Why can't I have the right to make my own "health care decisions"?

Oh. Because it it not about the right to make our own "health care" decisions generally. Both men and women face restrictions.

It is only about abortion. But framed dishonestly.

Walz seemed like a nice guy but with the IQ of a turnip. The perfect example of Minnasota manhood. Or maybe they just live in their own little world up there. Yeah, you can get an abortion in Minnasosta - dontchaknow. Woo hoo, we're number 1!

Here's a question. Where cant you get an abortion in the USA? Answer: Everywhere except 14 states. Alabama, Arkansas, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, and West Virginia.

I'd estimate 85 percent of Americans live in states with legal abortions. And if you do live in the one of those 14 states, you can drive a couple hundred miles or buy an airline ticket and get one.

But hey, lets keep talking about how abortion "rights" are under siege, because that's what wimmen care about.

Narayanan said...

can MN feminist Walz match this

Narayanan said...

is abortion for women = I wanna get away [on SW airlines] whenever I wanna

Here I thought governors were supposed to enforce the laws made by others, including those signed by previous governors. What's he going to do if the MN legislature miraculously passes restrictions over his likely veto? Impeach!

planetgeo said...

I would suggest to the virtue-signaling Governor Walz that, in addition to offering "shelter from the storm" to all those "smart, strong women", he also offers them some basic education on how to take "shelter from the sperm". One would think that being smart, they would already know about such things. But maybe the problem isn't about being smart enough but more about being responsible enough to take timely action affecting the lives of others besides your own.

Health care "=" human rites or the wicked solution that denies life deemed unworthy of life under the Democrazis' Pro-Choice religion. It is a human rite performed for social, clinical, criminal, political, and climate progress. It offers cover for queer sexual orientations: incest, pedophilia, sadomasochism, rape and rape-rape under Democratic law. Keep women affordable, available, reusable, and taxable, and the "burden" of evidence sequestered in sanctuary states.

Perhaps Walz was referencing his fellow Minnesotan but the term "shelter from the storm" is found, for instance, in the Bible. So your Redditor's answer is not quite as categorically "right" as you declare it to be.

D.D. Driver said...

Thank you! Yes! Why all this talk about a "woman's right to choose"? It is a pregnant person's right to terminate the pregnancy. Many men have abortions and need tampons. Why does he continue to oppress us?

thesixthmoon said...

New International Version, Isaiah 25:4 "...a refuge for the needy in their distress, a shelter from the storm..."

The King James version uses the word "fortress" instead of "shelter".

Mason G said...

"We will protect a woman's right to make her own health care decisions."

"Health care"? C'mon now- everybody knows what you mean. And it's not the right to refuse the injection of an experimental medicine.

For people so obsessed with making it as easy as possible to kill unborn babies, the left sure seems to go a lot of effort to avoid saying the word "abortion".

Came across this Dylan quote about Trump from his book Chronicles:
I’m talking about artists with the willpower not to conform to anybody’s reality but their own. Patsy Cline and Billy Lee Riley. Plato and Socrates, Whitman and Emerson. Slim Harpo and Donald Trump. It’s a lost art form. I don’t know who else does it beside myself, to tell you the truth

If I had to pick a favorite Dylan song, Shelter from the Storm would be a strong candidate.

So would Walz/Harris/Pelosi +++ suggest we NOT donate to a charity for prevention of (e.g.) ovarian cancer? After all that appears to be outside of the left's entire definition of "women's health care".

’Twas in another lifetime, one of toil and blood
When blackness was a virtue, and the road was full of mud
I came in from the wilderness, a creature void of form
“Come in,” she said, “I’ll give you shelter from the storm.”

Seems like that could apply very well to the election cycle just ending, but I guess Bob Dylan lyrics can be applied to almost anything. Maybe every election cycle seems like a time of toil, blood and mud. The part about blackness being a virtue is something one probably shouldn't say now. The "creature void of form" may be the post-election future knocking at our door now and asking to be let in.

I'm curious about similarities and differences between Zimmerman and Dylan Thomas. I can see the often-obscure imagery in both, but Dylan Thomas's lines don't seem to be as applicable or relevant to so many situations and events as Zimmerman's.
