"I mean, I would describe it as god-tier level trolling, that has triggered a full-on China Syndrome to own the libs in perpetuity."

Said John Fetterman, quoted in "Sen. John Fetterman calls Rep. Matt Gaetz AG nomination ‘god-tier’ level of trolling to 'own libs'" (NY Post).

Well, Gaetz wouldn't be in office "in perpetuity."

Or would he...

I don't like the characterization that it’s trolling. Like many others he’s certainly capable of prosecuting Democrat criminals. The problem with the others is motivation. Nobody is as motivated to wade through the swamp ick more than Gaetz…

People saying that Gaetz and Hegseth are likely incapable of "reforming" their portfolios are completely missing the point. In the first Trump term, the president tried reforming the DoJ and State departments. That failed catastrophically. Even if there is supposedly a vast reserve of lawyers remotely as motivated as Matt Gaetz to dismantle the DoJ- there is not- such intentions do not require vast degrees of skill. A flamethrower, not a precision bomb.

Democrats doing what Democrats do--they don't like Trump's picks, but instead of recognizing that Trump has picks because Trump won and if they want picks, they need to win, they instead throw a temper tantrum that Trump isn't making their picks.

My question is: Does Gaetz knows 120 ball-breaking Mafioso-type prosecutors who know where the bodies are buried and are willing to do some pipe-hittin'?

To replace every US attorney in the United States on January 20, 2025.

Not sure he does.

Dixcus said...

It won't be Democrats preventing Trump's picks from taking office.

And remember for the last 3.7 years, Republicans have been funding NPR, handing out grants to Harvard, ensuring their professors keep getting paid, etc. etc. Funding Democrats, in other words. Funding the Democrat Party as those insanely-inflated salaries are kicked back to the DNC.

Republicans are the problem now.

I dont think Gaetz has the wordworking skills required to build the requisite number of scaffolds that will need to be constructed on the Mall.

Does anyone? The ones who are "qualified" are the ones least likely to rock the boat. Now, do I know people ready to simply fire bullets into brainpans? Yeah boy- millions of them. Let us know which version we're going with.

"God-level" trolling? Does he mean to invoke Daryl Van Horn's rant on the creation of women?

Lem Vibe Bandit said...

Even then, I don’t believe the lessons are clear to them. So far I’ve only heard from one Democrat activist, who happens to be trans, saying “we’ve made our bed”. all thought she does express some apprehension at the very possible Republicans fresh with power believing it’s their turn to overreach, to throw out the bottle with the baby formula.

Who better to investigate DOJ lawfare prosecutions than the victim of a DOJ lawfare investigation?.......They say that the ethics investigation against him will not be released since he has resigned from Congress. Sure. No chance of it leaking to the press....I don't know that much about Gaetz. There's a lot of smoke surrounding him, but maybe there's no fire but rather a smoke making machine that was placed in his vicinity.....I don't suppose it's possible that he could be any worse than Alvin Bragg, and I have never once heard Alvin Bragg be criticized by any Democrat.

It turns out Fetterman is quite sharp. Much sharper than, say, Gavin Newsom.

Fetterman appearing all magnanimous reminds me of coach Belichick heaping praise on the other team’s prowess on the field.

Hegseth and Gaetz are not the same. Hegseth is a thinker. The open question on him is whether he has the executive skills to accomplish what he wants.

Gaetz is a jester. There is no way he has the skill required to tame the Justice Department.

Murkuski and Collins are definite no’s. It is likely that there are at least two more.

Did the Trump team even vett Gaetz? If it comes to hearings the Ethics Committee report will come into play. Why nominate a guy who, if this were twenty years ago, would have been a frequent flyer on the Lolita Express?

It seems likely to me that Trump deliberately picked the most inflammatory possible individuals for some of these jobs as part of his well-known negotiating strategy. If they manage to squeak in and deliver on their promises to dismantle the deep state, that will be excellent. If they fail, hopefully he has a more low-profile assassin waiting in the wings who will seem like a reasonable compromise to the blowhard grandees of the Senate, but will quietly be just as merciless.

I recall the tremendous hoo hah and screams of outrage when Trump tried to fire U.S. Attorneys at the start of his first term. It had been traditional that each of the U.S. Attorneys (the head lawyer in charge of each US attorney office) resign or offer a letter of resignation when a new President came into office. But with Trump I and the call for "resistance" that tradition was not followed. Gaetz is a bomb thrower--and may not get confirmed. But this sort of mule headed bureaucratic "resistance" to a new President has to go.

From the NYTimes:
“None of the attorneys had what Trump wants, and they didn’t talk like Gaetz,” a Trump adviser tells The Bulwark’s Marc Caputo. “Everyone else looked at AG as if they were applying for a judicial appointment. They talked about their vaunted legal theories and constitutional bullshit. Gaetz was the only one who said, ‘yeah, I’ll go over there and start cuttin’ fuckin’ heads.’”

The Gaetz-for-AG plan came together yesterday, just hours before it was announced, Meridith tells us. It was hatched aboard Trump’s airplane en route to Washington, on which Gaetz was a passenger. A Trump official revealed more details to Playbook late last night: BORIS EPSHTEYN played a central role in the development, lobbying Trump to choose Gaetz while incoming White House chief of staff SUSIE WILES was in a different, adjacent room on the plane, apparently unaware.

This has been planned for some time. Trump referenced his "little secret" with Gaetz back in October.

You might have noticed that Gaetz was in the room in the video of Trump dictating criticism of Kamala's "thankyou, thankyou" acceptance speech - as shown here on Althouse.

So was Tulsi.

Also, Thune said before his selection as ML that he would allow recess appointments.

Given that Gaetz has already resigned from the House to pursue this new opportunity, I don't think it was just an opening bid from Trump, with the intent of replacing Gaetz with someone more palatable. Gaetz is all-in. I read one possibility being that if the Senate turns thumbs down on the nomination, then Florida Governor DeSantis could name Gaetz as the new Senator to replace Sen. Rubio, meaning that the Senate's choice is to make him the AG or make him a colleague in the Senate.

I would expect Gaetz to be the President’s wing man. A return to the norms set by previous appointees like Holder and Garland. Trump’s first term picks were the exception.

planetgeo said...

Tina, I follow your posts and respect your thoughtful comments on Gaetz, but this time you're the one not seeing that some logical, professional career candidate would NOT be able to accomplish anything you just listed. Just the naming of Gaetz starts to enable that possibility...even if he was just a stalking horse for the real person Trump figures he'll be able to get approved after Gaetz gets rejected by the Senate.

Message delivered via the exploding heads. And Trump didn't even need to do it via pagers.

Mike Petrik said...

Yes, because Trump will have made a loyal gesture, Gaetz will not be confirmed leaving his career in the toilet, and Trump will be left with a functional House with which to work.

loudogblog said...

It's an old negotiation tactic to ask for something outrageous, that you know you won't get, so that you can then propose something later that now appears more reasonable. (Don't forget that Trump is the master of "the deal.")

I think that Gaetz may have been premature in giving up his seat before he was confirmed. He just has too much baggage and too many Republicans in the Senate will vote against him.

Earnest Prole said...

With so many Republican enemies Gaetz will never even make it to the floor for a vote. It’s probably best for Trump since kamikazes make poor wartime consigliares.

Rosalyn C. said...

IMO the person most trolled by the appointment of Gaetz has to Merrick Garland. Merrick Garland was supposedly a totally respected and professional jurist, a federal judge, and yet he allowed the DOJ to become a weapon of the Democratic Party.
