Georgia Gov. Kemp has suspended the state gas tax (temporarily) in an effort to help with the state’s hurricane recovery.
It’s amazing the resources a competent state executive can bring to bear on behalf of its citizens when a state is managed well and running within its budget.
1. On the first of October, it was 111 degrees here in Tempe AZ. Amazingly enough it really didn’t feel so hot. And this evening is lovely.
2. Melania’s book was #1 on Amazon’s best seller list for a few days and is now #11. Yahoo News says the Trumps may be buying copies. Always possible. Poor Bill Gates is at 53,197. Bill Gate’s book is a heftier book - it weighs in at 1.45 pounds. Melania is a slender 1.16 pounds.
If all goes according to plan, I'll be back here on 13 or 14 October. Please don't solve all the world's problems while I'm gone.

Let's please remember that hundreds of thousands of people in North and South Carolina are still without power. Over a thousand people are unaccounted for and missing. There are NO FEMA TRUCKS anywhere in any of these communities and you can tell by looking at the photos from citizens on Twitter. FEMA is NOWHERE to be found. These people need our prayers because they have ZERO help from Walz or Harris.
Ths is from a non-political blog, by a very successful author who usually blogs about the craft of writing — how to get published, how I did publishing works, how to evaluate voice talent for audiobooks, etc. But her husband has family in Western North Carolina and that led to this set of observations:
Why didn’t people evacuate?
I see this question a lot, and I can tell you why. First, when WNC catches the tail end of a hurricane, it usually results in some flash floods and sometimes the power will be out. WNC is far inland. By the time the usual storms reach it, they lose steam, so buying supplies and waiting it out is usually sufficient. That’s why when Floridian evacuate, they go up north to north Georgia and North Carolina.
This is not the case of some stubborn coastal residents who know what hurricanes do because they get frequently hit. This has not happened in the last 40 years. By the time it became apparent just how bad the storm would hit, it was too late.
Second, a lot of people in that area simply have no place to go. It’s mountainous, roads are few, and you have livestock and pets involved. Roads in the mountains are not always safe. I-40 is the main artery in or out anwashed awayd it collapsed in the storm. The entire region is devastated.
I can add that I’ve seen pictures of parts of I-40 and I-26 that are gone — simply washed away. As of the last time I checked I-40 is closed from mile marker 3 to mile marker 435.
