Mainstream media helps Kamala Harris maintain the nothingness.

This isn't the first time I'm noting that the Kamala Harris campaign seems to have chosen a no-substance strategy — a campaign about nothing. See here and here, for example.

This post is just to collect 2 new examples of elite media helping the Harris campaign disserve the electorate by withholding substantive content:

1. "Kamala Harris Doesn’t Need Policy to Win/In fact, a detailed platform will hurt her campaign more than it will help" by Peter Rothpletz in The New Republic: "Harris’s vibes-based, personality-based approach to the first six weeks of this mad dash of a campaign is clearly working.... Harris should hang out in the coconut tree and not release any economic plans that can’t fit within a Venn diagram. To win, Harris doesn’t need policy. She just needs vibes."

2. "How Harris Wins (and Trump and the Republicans Blow It)" by Ross Douthat in The New York Times": "[Y]ou have to think about Marie Kondo, the Japanese style guru famous for her ruthless minimalism, whose prescription for a cluttered home is to remove any object that doesn’t immediately 'spark joy.' The progressivism that infuses the contemporary Democratic Party can be a cluttered, claustrophobic worldview.... Her convention speech was especially Kondo-ist: Short, sparse, and nonspecific about virtually everything....  [W]inning on the most limited agenda and by the narrowest of margins is still winning...."

I didn't go looking for more things to put on this list. These are just 2 things I casually ran across this morning. I'm guessing there's more of the same out there, whether it's this explicitly stated or not.

This reminds me: The debate date is coming up soon. I'm guessing it won't happen. Kamala Harris will drop out and blame Trump. Here's what I said on this topic a month ago. Excerpt: "She's already avoiding speaking on substance. She's following something like Biden's old Covid-era 'basement strategy.' To avoid any debate would be consistent with her overall campaign strategy."

Huh? That’s probably the feeblest attempt to conjure up some sort of argument I’ve read on this site. You even used the “weird” keyword.

The idea that Kamala can run to election day without substance and ditching the debate sounds like the "he's sharp as a tack" conventional wisdom from the lefty intelligentsia. It seems to be working until it catastrophically fails.

[W]inning on the most limited agenda and by the narrowest of margins is still winning.

Then you can claim an electoral mandate because "elections have consequences" and govern any damn way you want. Bonus points for continuing to state that your values "haven't changed".

Isn't that how Obama campaigned? Like he's so cool, wouldn't it be cool to have a "black" president? I mean people actually said that to me.

Only, she's not cool.

I've attempted several times to place a dollar value on the in-kind contribution the media industry complex has given to the democrats with zero transparency and zero FEC filings, and I can't do it except to throw out numbers in the (T)rillions.

But assigning a dollar number to their assistance doesn't capture its true value: it is literally priceless. No one could buy such assistance. Ever. It's true value is only expressed when being handed to them like a gift at Christmas. Then I ask myself what the democratic party would or could've done without that assistance, and the answer is their party would've ceased to exist a long time ago.

It is thoroughly amazing that republicans are able to pull victories whatsoever with such a leviathan sitting its fat ass on the scales of public opinion.

1. Not Donald Trump, AKA "Joy"
2. Reproductive rights until termination of pregnancy, AKA "Freedom"
3. On the ballot.
That's the platform. Will it win?
If not, what then?

Kate said...

Douthat does a good job of explaining the nothingness. It requires Kamala to be as bland as possible, which may mean the debate is cancelled, as you suggest. We'll see.

Democrats and Harris do have an argument: Vote for the Deep State bureaucracy. They’ll preserve your phony baloney job.

doctrev said...

If someone thinks President Trump and Kamablah Harris are on the same intellectual level after watching his 30+ debates and her one (obviously done from notes), then they are set up for true disappointment. At least Joe Biden had senility as an excuse.

Ironically YouTube is showing truth here: few people engaged with Harris' propped up infomercial and they would rather pretend footage doesn't exist. By contrast, Trump interviews routinely pop 2 million plus in the first 24 hours. "Momentum" is an oligarch lie, and an unconvincing one.

It almost makes one fear for the future.

If Obama campaigning was the gold standard, Donald Trump would have never won the 2016 election. Barack Hussein is nowhere near as popular as he pretends he is. Not that it matters.

Kevin said...

To avoid any debate would be consistent with her overall campaign strategy.

What they need is something Trump does or says which can be turned into, "Kamala can't lower herself to be on stage with that monster!"

They thought they had it with Trump visiting the Abby Gate graves, but it slipped through their fingers because the GOPe is no longer fully on Team Mainstream Media. In 2016, with no surrogates to back him, it would have worked.

And other than vague plans to deport 12 to 15 million people (and in some of his rantings, 20 million), end the housing crisis by lowering interest rates (which he can't do), "fixing" Obamacare (of which he still hasn't produced a plan, maybe in two weeks) what exactly are Trump's policies?

And while you are at it, I was really annoyed the other day when you claimed Trump's speeches were "genius" because he "weaves" a story that, when the entire speech is finished, there is a point to it. Please analyze any Trump speech from a rally you like, and tell me the theme of the speech (other than "the country is fucked up and only I can fix it"). Cause maybe I am just stupid, but I don't know what the hell he is talking about much of the time.

For extra credit, you can explain what his pondering about electric boats and sharks has fuck all to do with being president.

Jersey Fled said...

I just went to the Harris for President website for my weekly update. Still not a word about her program or agenda. That’s unless you consider a blathering puff piece about how wonderful she is and what she “stands for” a platform. Remember: her “values” have never changed. Like on fracking. Except when she’s in Pennsylvania.

Now to Trump’s website. Once you get past the obligatory donate pop up, you are greeted by his Agenda 47 Platform. Twenty clear, one sentence statements of his plans for his second term. Right there for you to read.

The difference couldn’t be more stark.

Freder Frederson said...

How on earth did you come up with Trump participating in 30+ debates? Sounds like a number the monkeys flying out of your butt told you. He had a few debates in the 2016 primary campaign and a couple with Hillary Clinton, a couple debates with Biden in 2020, and one so far this year (he skipped the primary debates).

Union dues fill democrat/mob coffers to the tune of BILLIONS.

Gerda Sprinchorn said...

"I'm guessing it won't happen. Kamala Harris will drop out and blame Trump."

I disagree. Harris is capable of memorizing maybe 15 short (1.5 minute), punchy, dishonest, speech chunks. I predict she will stick to them relentlessly in the debate and then do nothing but repeat her stump speech for the rest of the campaign.

She can't risk giving another interview like the CNN interview, so she won't.

She will rely on wise MSM analysts to judge that whatever she is doing is exactly the right thing to do.

Pillage Idiot said...

We trust our actual eyeballs, Rich.

Can you please link to any of the plethora of videos where Kamala describes in great detail all of her policy goals and the means to achieve those goals?

If a media "talking head" says outlining her policy positions will hurt her, then:

1.) Her lack of policy positions makes that a true statement, or

2.) It is a false statement, and her policy positions will actually help her win the election, but she is too stupid to clearly state those positions.

Freder Frederson said...

All I see in Agenda 47 is a bunch of vague promises with no indication of the "how" of it all. It also has at least one outright lie, there is no "migrant crime epidemic".

She's FORCED to do this. Here are some things Kamala COULD say, but CAN'T say:

"On Day One I will ..." She can't say that because she's already IN OFFICE and has been for 3.5 years. She could do it today. Why wait?

"I will fix (x)..." ... She can't say that, because why hasn't she ALREADY fixed x?

"I promise to do (x) ..." Again, why isn't she doing "x" today?

"America needs bold leadership." - Um ... she can't say that.

"I promise to bring down inflation." - Why did you let it go up in the first place?

You can see how trapped she is by ANYTHING she says. So she is forced to say NOTHING and the media is forced to allow that because of course, they are in on the fact that our elections are fixed and rigged. "Can't let the uneducated deplorables determine the direction of a nation, now can we." The media see themselves as saving America from Americans.

Avoidance of policy statements IS a policy statement. It says, "I'm going to keep doing things the same way we've been doing them for the last 3 years...or worse. So I don't dare say that."

Bruce Hayden said...

We all know the plan. Comrades Harris and Walz will duck saying much of anything for the next two months, and the Dems will try to depend on their cheating to win. The Republicans are trying just the opposite - fight the cheating when they can, and try to overcome the level of fraud by firing up the masses.

Right now, looking at the fraud, MI looks lost to Trump. Its Courts, etc are strongly coming out in favor of election fraud. PA seemed to be going in the right (honest elections) direction, until last week when a judge there determined that mail in ballots can’t be rejected for bad dates on the envelopes. I still have hopes for GA and AZ, where Republican legislatures tightened up election laws, and the courts haven’t gutted them yet.

What must be remembered is that the Dems only stay close across the country through massive election fraud. Once they go to all mail in voting, the state is locked up for the Dems. The Dems utilize computer databases to register and reregister illegal voters, whether they be dead, moved away, etc. Remove them from the rolls of eligible voters, they pop back up a couple weeks later. The fraud is institutionalized, well organized, and heavily funded by Dem super pacs like ActBlue. It is likely that Trump actually received more legal votes, across the country, in 2020, than FJB, while the latter recorded 4-5 million more votes. Yes, the fraud rwally is that massive.

Election fraud. It’s real, and it’s massive. Maybe a million illegal votes in PA in 2020, and a half million in both GA and AZ. Certainly far more (at least 10x) than the Dems’s margins of victory in those states.

The executive branch and the apparatus that feeds it with personnel and enjoys its perks would rather be governed by a lighter hand, and has total control of one of two major political parties. This is what Harris represents. This apparatus can, will, and prefers to self-manage. That way, it can practice risk-aversion to all the forces that threaten it (that's us) and avoid any direct responsibility for the product of its work. The self-licking ice cream cone es uber alles.

Another crutch for Harris to get through the debate: shouting.

Both Harris and Biden have trouble talking in a normal voice, but each can shout reasonably well. All of Biden's "good speeches" were shout fests, e.g. the SOTU. Harris's acceptance speech was mostly shouting, even the "hearfelt" parts.

So, in the debate, Harris can help herself by mostly shouting. ("Shouting" doesn't always have to use a loud voice. Here, I include accusing, bullying, outrage, and general viciousness, she just has to imagine herself shouting in a loud voice to get the right tone and to avoid sounding ditzy.)

I used to live in an apartment complex in Aurora, back in the early eighties. It was a different place back then than now, it seems.

Remember though, it's against Colorado law, a felony, to attempt in any way to validate that the 100% mail-in elections are fairly counted. This law was passed by the people elected by 100% mail-in votes.

In 2020 the Republican Party ran on no platform whatsoever, and to hear Donald Trump tell it, that’s the year he won the Presidency by millions of votes. So I think withholding substance can be an effective strategy.

The Harris campaign is a sham campaign. It’s sole purpose it to raise money and send it to the down ballot races. $25m just a couple days ago. They can’t allow Trump to have both the House and the Senate when he wins back the WH.

What "platform" did Trump need in 2020- he was the actual President and did promise to follow the same plans from 2017-2021. Harris could do that but she isn't. Now, the GOP did run without a platform in 2022 and that didn't work out so well.

The New Republic is more in the bubble, or cocoon, or silo than it used to be. Fewer people read it now -- like Spinal Tap they have become more selective -- so they don't have to write for people outside the bubble, or even take their existence into account.

Is the premise correct, though? It seems like every day Harris is promising something new, some new pot of money to be bestowed somewhere on somebody or something. Not setting these offers down on a web page lets the campaign and the press pull promises out of the bag, show them to the crowd, and stuff them back into the bag as they see fit.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

Admittedly it's a small sample size but why are the crazy progressives on here acting crazier than usual? Maybe they realize the campaign about nothing isn't doing so well, that her high point was before her speech at the convention. That is her peak polling took place mid-week and has steadily eroded since then. Even the darling of Inga, Nate Silver, has Trump projected to win after the brief 5-point "lead" Kamala held for a day (a whole day!) is now showing her trailing by 5 and dropping in every poll. She didn't even get the post-DNC "bounce" they all predicted. Her appearance there was the exact point where the free fall accelerated. Now she's running behind both Hillary and Biden compared to 2016 and 2020 respectively.

Maybe Will Rogers (and whoever he riffed on) was correct: You can't beat something with nothing. Actually, with anchor weight Tim "Tampon" Walz she has less than nothing to work with. He's losing support in MN the state that knows him best.

Jupiter said...

In the early days of the American Republic, it was considered unseemly for any candidate to make any overt attempt to secure election. One "sat" for election. One did not publicly campaign. Of course, plenty of campaigning went on behind closed doors.
Maybe the system is working as designed.

Precisely the way any "neutral" observer would................

Yes, the chart at the link shows Trump participating in all but one of the 2016 primary debates. There were separate debates for the first and second tier candidates at the beginning. They came in pairs on the same date in the same place and under the same auspices but at different times. Trump obviously wasn't at the debates for second tier candidates, but the record shows that he only missed one of the primary debate nights in that election cycle.

Foibles and screwups and failures? Withholding substance is a strategy that appears to be working for Democrats in 2024 just as it did for Trump and the Republicans in 2020.

Freder Frederson said...

That ridiculous assertion is based on a quote by some anonymous cop in New York: A Midtown officer added:

"I would say about 75 percent of the arrests in Midtown Manhattan are migrants, mostly for robberies, assaults, domestic incidents and selling counterfeit items."

He estimated this figure because "you can't be 100 percent sure [they're migrants] unless you arrest them in a shelter or they're dumb enough to give you a shelter address."

Don't rely on information you read in the Daily Mail (or the New York Post).

So you are admitting that you have no proof? Even Bill Barr agreed that there was no evidence of significant fraud.

One piece of evidence is that level of fraud alleged by Bruce Hayden (one million fraudulent votes just in Pennsylvania, so I am assuming he believes the 20 million+ nationwide assertion) could not be carried out by a handful of people. It would involve hundreds, if not thousands, of people in a massive nationwide conspiracy. Are you telling me no one involved had a fit of conscience, or at least greed, and spilled the beans about the fraud.

No, Sebastian, it's "enough" right now.

Maybe.

The problem she and the Dems face is that the same voters who don't believe the gov't economy numbers over their own lying eyes, are going to get tired of Kamala always hiding.

What the Democrat shills are doing is confusing "patiences" with "acceptance."

The voters are patiently waiting for Kamala to tell them where she stands. That doesn't mean they accept that she's never going to tell them.

I expect that Althouse is right Kamala is going to skip the debate. But I also expect Kamala's numbers will start to tank after she does so

This claim has been debunked repeatedly.

The Republican National Committee's Executive Committee voted on June 10, 2020, to adopt the same platform the party used in 2016. The decision accompanied a series of adjustments to the itinerary and location of the Republican National Convention due to the coronavirus pandemic, including reducing the number of in-person delegates attending the convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, from 2,500 to 336, and canceling the meeting of the Platform Committee.

Politico reported that both conservative and moderate Republicans were dissatisfied with the decision: "Social conservatives wanted new language on gender identity and late-term abortions. Social moderates said the current platform could alienate suburbanites."

Responding to criticism, RNC national press secretary Mandi Merritt said, "It would not be right for a very small group to craft a new platform without all of the delegates present." On June 12, 2020, President Donald Trump (R) called for a new and updated platform.

The Republican National Committee adopted a resolution regarding the platform on August 22, 2020, that reiterated that the party would not adopt a new platform because "it did not want a small contingent of delegates formulating a new platform without the breadth of perspectives within the ever-growing Republican movement." The resolution also noted the party's continued support for Trump's America First agenda.

On August 23, 2020, Trump released a list of his core priorities for a second term in office.

And I love how the cop included "selling counterfeit items" in his list of crimes migrants are responsible for. I would imagine more than half of all the arrests he makes are for selling counterfeit items. Midtown is one of the safest parts of NYC, which means it is also one of the safest urban areas in the country, and also one of the richest (median income is $120,000). Selling fake Louis Vuitton purses and Rolex watches on the street hardly rises to the level of crime which would deter anyone from visiting the area.
