"It's not the economy, stupid: Why Kamala Harris should focus on everything else."

A headline over at Salon. The piece is by Joe Tauke. Excerpt:

[R]egardless of whatever economic statistics Harris or Biden or any other Democrat might throw out there... [polls] strongly imply that no amount of attempted persuasion will convince voters that they feel better about the economy now than they did during the Trump administration — because, well, they don’t. It’s not even close.... Moreover, real-time economic conditions (other than inflation) for the country appear to be deteriorating just as the campaign enters its most intense phase.... If voters in [swing] states are thinking about the economy when casting their ballots, Trump will win. If Harris can get them to think about virtually anything else (other than immigration), she’ll win. In 1992, during Bill Clinton’s winning effort against George H.W. Bush, “It’s the economy, stupid” was the best advice a Democratic campaign could follow. In 2024, it’s the best way for the latest Democratic nominee to lose.

Okay, but "virtually anything else"? Immigration? Endless wars? Going toe-to-toe with Putin? The Covid lockdown? Guns? Gender affirmation treatments? DEI? Rather than "anything else," the best advice — the advice she seems to be taking — is that nothing else is better. Kamala Harris is running as representing no issue at all. They say you can't beat something with nothing, but they are trying, and they think — I believe — it's their best hope... because the something (Donald Trump) is so monstrously, calamitously bad.

ADDED: I think the phrase "You can't beat something with nothing" originated with Will Rogers, and he was talking, in 1934, about Republicans running on nothing but the horribleness of their opponent — FDR:

BUT: I see I blogged about Will Rogers and the phrase "You can't beat something with nothing" last January, here. At the time, "I wanted to critique the Biden campaign strategy." Ha ha. Anyway, I determined last January that "Will Rogers didn't invent 'You can't beat something with nothing.' Even back then, it was an 'old saying.'"

As far as I hear, all Harris has is Trump will make Abortion illegal. Something he's stated he won't do. And Project 2025! Something he's disavowed.
How can anyone vote for a candidate who won't talk to the press, who won't state what she will do (and explain why she's not doing it right now!), and who lies constantly about her opponent?

Ann nails it. I just read a story about a rural Indiana teen girl who was stabbed in the hand by an illegal alien at a baseball game. That was unthinkable 4 years ago. In Manhattan, 75% of the crime is committed by illegals.

The only way Harris wins is by cheating and TDS.

This election cycle is really showing the power the media still has to control the narrative. We hate them, we distrust them, but they still exercise huge control over what people think and talk about.

How many people have forgotten that less than 2 months ago, there was a nearly successful assassination attempt on Trump? How many people think about Kamal Harris' involvement in the conspiracy to hide Biden's physical and mental decline? (Which should be one of the greatest scandals in American political history.)

a week after Kamela was anointed, my (92yr life long democrat) mother said to me:
"well, They Say that Trump's brain is starting to go.."
I asked her what she meant? and she said he was getting senile..
I asked her WHERE she heard that? and she said: "THEY SAID."

my mom believes ANYTHING that the media tells her.. ANY THING at all.
If it's in Mother Jones News.. it's Gospel.
Needless to say, She'll be voting for Kamela this month

The lies are astonishingly brazen. The D campaign has repeatedly referred to JD Vance as a child of rich parents assuming the voters that matter, the ones who are barely paying attention (because they have lives to deal with), will just accept it. Ds love to accuse Rs of "The Big Lie", but that one is pretty astonishing. I guess they know people don't read books.

I simply don't get the complaint that Harris is running on nothing. She has at least one big issue -- abortion. She is clearly against banning abortion. And although folks say that abortion is now a state issue, the federal government has a big say. For example, banning the sale of mifepristone. This is a big issue, and the contrast between Trump and Harris could not be more stark.

Saying she is running on nothing is really saying that an issue that is a major concern for many people, including many women, is nothing.

The California Man with the Plan was socialist novelist Upton Sinclair. Sinclair's comment on the election may be relevant today: "The American People will take Socialism, but they won't take the label. I certainly proved it in the case of EPIC. Running on the Socialist ticket I got 60,000 votes, and running on the slogan to 'End Poverty in California' I got 879,000." The next summer, Will Rogers would be gone -- a plane crash in Alaska.

The Democrat hope is that with Biden's stepping down, everything Biden and Trump will be old news, eclipsed by fresh, new, "brat" Kamala, but what's really left for the Democrats to harp on? Abortion 24-7?

The thing is, Harris does have something. She's not running on nothing. "It's not the economy, stupid: Why Kamala Harris should focus on everything else."

1: It IS the economy, which is why she's going to lose.

[R]egardless of whatever economic statistics Harris or Biden or any other Democrat might throw out there... [polls] strongly imply that no amount of attempted persuasion will convince voters that they feel better about the economy now than they did during the Trump administration — because, well, they don’t. It’s not even close

That's because the Dems are gaming the numbers, and the reality is far worse, which everyone knows from their own lives

If Harris can get them to think about virtually anything else (other than immigration), she’ll win
"anything else" like, oh, all the things the good Professor listed

If you can get them to do no thinking at all, on any subject, and simply emote "Trump is bad", then you might win. Once any thinking gets involved, Harris loses.

Tell me three things so bad about Trump that they force you to vote for Harris, and I'll show you where Biden, Harris, Obama, or Walz was at least just as bad as Trump on those things.

"Trump is a lying narcissistic windbag!" So are all 4 of the Dems. "If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor." There's no bigger liar in politics that Barack Obama, although Joe Biden ran a close second

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

Boy that's some vacuous advice. How apropos. Harris's problem in this campaign is that there are no wins in the biden-Harris era. The closest they come to positives are that most of the jobs lost during COVID (but not all) have been back-filled and inflation is not presently increasing. Unfortunately for the cacklers campaign both of those slight positives come with yuge caveats. The full-time jobs never came back to the extent part-time jobs replaced them and the only growth for US citizens was in government jobs; all other job growth went to immigrants. And inflation is stubbornly near 3% still, even if it is down from its high, there is no relief because wage growth has stalled. This used to be called "stagflation."

But I think the biggest hangover from being Biden's wingwoman is that Harris has had to continually lie to the American people about the border, about Joe's fitness, about the economy, etc. They were both in such a habit of telling us how great it was when we all knew it wasn't that she has no credibility left. Which is why "my values haven't changed" was received much differently than she thought it would be when she memorized it, and used like an all-purpose answer in the fake interview.

Kamala-lala-ding-dong is running on abortion as are the Dems here in AZ. However, she is deceptive about the difference between her position (unlimited access until the moment of birth) and Trump's position (let the states decide, but thinks 6 weeks limit is too short).

In other words, Trump is taking the moderate position and Kamala the radical one. In AZ, Kari Lake seems to be taking the radical position (almost all abortions banned) and will lose dramatically to Socialist Rueben Gallego.

This is why Kamala talks as though Trump is the incumbent and she's the challenger.
She's running on the future, on "what can be, unburdened by what has been."
Since the Biden Administration's record is dragging her down she has to distance herself from what is currently perceived as her own record.

Maybe her campaign slogan should be: "Yeah, but Joe wouldn't fucking listen."

All this fun and games is amusing, but only the mail-in ballot harvesting matters in electing the next president. And the Dems do that harvesting better than the Repubs. PA will have every single registered Democrat voter voting, absolutely 100%, for the Dem ticket, and every nursing home resident, empty lot, cemetery, etc., etc., etc. voting for the Dem ticket, too. Same in every other swing state.

I expect over 170,000,000 votes to be counted this election, versus the 155,000,000 last time. Both sides are harvesting mailed votes this time, but again the Dems do it better. Is a mail-in ballot, never asked for, never seen, by a nonvoter, but filled out by a Dem operative and mailed to the precinct counting center along with 100 or 1000 others, counted as a vote? Hell yes, always, since 2020. The fix is in, and it is being sent in via the US Postal Service.

That's a high-priority issue among us "conservatives". If a particular drug is safe, the Feds have no right to ban it because it is used to prevent or cause abortions. People these days forget how popular Will Rogers was - - he turned a vaudeville roping act into an early standup comedy routine, telling "fresh-laid" jokes in the same manner that Johnny Carson later did. He became a popular newspaper columnist and radio show personality, and of course was a popular actor in the earliest years of Hollywood. When he died in an Alaska plane crash the entire US went into mourning. He was well-informed from his newspaper reading habit ("I only know what I read in the newspapers") and was politicially astute. I'd recommend the Donald Day biography of Rogers for anyone who wants to be better informed of that period.
