The WaPo./NYT's really hates that people in East Asia (including Japan) have homogeneous societies with a strong group ethos. So we constantly get these doom and gloom articles about things are bad and Young people are rebelling against "conformity". As opposed to say Israel or the USA, where "conformity" is a good thing.
And then there are those "Look at those wacky Japanese (Chinese/Korean)" articles. Which are supposed to make us smugly think that we're superior.
This was sorta of a Two-fer.
Man, kids in Asia seem to be even weirder than kids in the US.
How does pretending to be a bird help you cope with stress, I wonder? I can see maybe imagining yourself as a bird, soaring above the mess below, but - what's this? Is it just that this generation of kids doesn't believe they've actually had a thought or an experience unless they've uploaded it?
The fact that kids make photos like this has absolutely no meaning whatsoever, this is just something kids do to for identity. NYT fake news.

(2) Protest the Communist Chinese Party's corruption, nepotism, and social control in Tiananmen Square and be killed, jailed, or ostracized for life.
I'm guessing Option (1) will soon be treated the same as protesting in Tiananmen Square by the corrupt CCP. It is certainly more offensive to the dignity of the CCP than the Falun Gong doing Tai Chi in public back in the 1990s, and the Falun Gong is eliminated now.
