Until I read this post, I thought Kamala Harris was from Oakland, which gave her the right to claim a certain gritty credibility, in that that she might not have actually lived the struggle but she would have seen it up close and personal.
I think unless you're a baby boomer, growing up in Berkeley isn't going to mean anything to most of the rest of the country. You have to know a lot about the 60s and then Patty Hearst and all of that to think of Berkeley as anything other than some place out in CA.

The NYT has to address some of these issues to get their excuse making out of the way. But fundamentally, I think they cover this because they know Kamala is never going to happen.
That’s “average” That average is obtained by including the dumpy Flats region, the transient student are, where just about no permanent residents of Berkeley live. I’d say the average up in the hills is at least $5 million. A quick Zillow search returned home prices from $3 to $10 million and more.

The difference in the electorate is measured between those who see the key parts of this statement as 'very' and 'spectacularly' and those focused on the word 'wealthy'. It's a matter of class identity. Madison and Berkeley are the homes of factories of knowledge, built and supported by the governments of these powerful states. Imagine the impact on the families tied to these factories, many through generations, if they were for some reason to shut down.
What if the future history of the U is like the past history of the Hamilton Watch Company or Studebaker or Westinghouse? How does the Gibson family of Oberlin Ohio feel about the ethos of academia?
What if the U is not a forever thing? A thought exercise.

The big underlying groundswell out among the American people is a deep-seated desire to move the national leadership down a generation. Harris has hit this moment both beautifully and with perfect execution. She's not a punchline in anyone's joke anymore.
Harris' acceptance speech was an example of first-rank speech writing well delivered. One can expect to hear these themes expanded and driven home in the fall campaign. FDR-like.

Picking the right topnotch person for the big jobs is a crucial skill for presidential success -- and Harris far exceeds Trump at this vital skill.
The consolidation of support after Biden's withdrawal, the VP selection, the smooth runup to the convention, the perfectly managed convention that was competence on display -- all of this should be a powerful boost to the assurance and confidence of Democrats going into a consequential election where the Democrats have a chance too capture the future in a once-in-a-generation way. She is a proving to be a perfect candidate for a turn-the-page election.

If you look at a color-coded demographic map of the East Bay, you’ll see the wealthy white neighborhoods of Berkeley are contiguous with, and an extension of, Oakland’s wealthy white areas, while the poorer black neighborhoods of Berkeley are contiguous with, and an extension of, Oakland’s poorer black areas — stratified, as I noted, by elevation. What’s anomalous is Berkeley’s remarkable concentration of Asians around the university. California does not use affirmative action in university admissions, and therefore the Asian population of UC Berkeley exceeds 40 percent.

This component is not easily amenable to improvement through the interest rate because it reflects structural imbalances of physical supply where change takes much longer to have an effect.
"Affordable" housing is also Democratic party parlance for lots of government encrustation of housing programs to ensure that socially desirable results are achieved through proper mixes of incentives and planning and that all local state and municipal partners are engaged in the effort. Housing is much too important to be left to the vagaries of market-created supply and market-driven demand. Harris is probably correct to support a goal that way undershoots real need (demand). The deficient future supply will point to the need for even more future government intervention to Democrats.
For Republicans, a future more free-market Republican administration could throw the housing constraints overboard, pump federal subsidized mortgage into the sector, and let a surge in housing be the basis for a broader base of noninflationary growth such as occurred in the immediate postwar era. (Also see the Reagan administration scrapping of Carter administration price controls on natural gas and the resulting supply glut and price collapse--all in complete contravention of Carter admin economic prognostications.)
Quite likely Harris will win due to Trump's manifold inadequacies as a credible alternative (he personally steps on the Republican message with his very presence). However, the horizons for a post-Trump Republican party are excellent and one can expect the Republicans to storm back into legislative majorities in 2026. There is a deep layer of dissatisfaction in American public opinion that is unlikely to dissipate soon.

Hippy towns have, well, hippes -- people who have tuned in, turned on, and dropped out. They're more interested in the things they dropped out for. There's a political context, but their actual focus might be more on vegan food or chainsaw art.

1.5 million is not a lot of money for a house in California. My roommates and I bought a house in Fountain Valley CA for $305,000 in 1996. (4 bd.3 ba. 2,608 sq. ft.) It's worth about 1.5 million now.
Berkeley is more of a boomer thing. It's been quiet, or at least out of the headlines, for years. Is it more radical today than Ann Arbor or Madison -- or Portland or Seattle?
And yes, the East Bay is more of a highlands vs. lowlands than a Berkeley vs. Oakland thing. Oakland isn't what it was 50 years ago either, or Jerry Brown wouldn't have been elected mayor.
As the daughter of esteemed academics, Harris did have a more privileged background than many Americans or Canadians, but it doesn't look like her mother pushed her daughters academically, the way that Asian-American parents are said to.

A little historical context: in the early 1970s, the neighborhood Harris grew up in was much more working class and racially mixed than it was by the late 1980s, mostly due to rent control. It was also much more hard-left, which didn't change until later.
Like Lawnerd I went to Boalt Hall in Berkeley--65 to 68. Too late for the Free Speech Movement, just in time for the Filthy Speech Movement, and graduated a year before People's Park. My late brother lived in Berkeley (up near Grizzly Peak high in the hills from 1972 to his death in 2012). So I knew and watched Berkeley change (a bit) over the years. There are and were big social and class divides in Berkeley. The hills were full of professors and their kids, successful lawyers and doctors and such. It was a really nice place to live. The Berkeley flats--where Kamala was a child--not so much. You had student housing and, until they were priced out, lots of blue collar workers and people of color (I'll use the woke phraseology). In the schools you had this volatile mix of rich white kids from the hills and poor black kids from the flats. My sister in law taught at Berkeley High for years. The school gradually became a woke combat zone.
If you want a flavor of Berkeley in the late 60s and early 70s you would enjoy reading Robert Roth's recent novel ":Berserkeley". He catches the flavor of life in and around the campus at the time perfectly.
May I say a few words about Berkeley -- where I and my husband both went to the UC, and came out more or less unscathed? It's not all protests, you know. I was insulated at first by being in Mech. E., and then musicology; he was a music student both as undergrad and grad. Sure, there were protests; there always are. Back in our day (80s and 90s), the topics were divestment (from South Africa, not Israel), Julia "Butterfly" Hill and her pet redwood, and (always) People's Park. I imagine it's less civilized now -- Telegraph Ave. had certainly gone more than semi-feral the last time I was there, a couple of years back -- but I believe that it is still possible to get a decent education there.
Whoever says above that the distinction between Berkeley and Oakland is largely superficial is right. We lived for some years in a small cottage on Alcatraz Ave., so in North Oakland. When I walked to school, there were perhaps three blocks of Oakland, and the rest was Berkeley. The only thing I noticed about the border was that street repair got suddenly better in Berkeley.

Yes, there are two Berkeleys the "Hills" and the "flats". There is also a very nice part of Oakland up in the Hills. But even in the 70s there was a big difference between Oakland and the flats of Berkeley. Harris only lived in Berkeley for 6 years, 1970-1976, and per her Bio would go live with her father in Palo Alto on the weekends.
Berkeley wasn't segregated in 60s and certainly wasn't segregated in the 70s. So, I doubt 12 y/o Kam was radicalized by "Crazy Berkeley" nor do I believe she was living in the ghetto and affected by "busing".
Berkeley is much worse now then it was in the 90s. Recently, maybe 1 or 2 years ago, a white UC student was murdered by a black vagrant, and the reaction of the UC Berkeley administration was "ho hum". A brief notice that he was killed with a blase "Well thats sad".

outsiders to grasp how Oakland-Berkeley is simultaneously one of the most integrated and segregated places in America. Everyone is welcome in the best neighborhoods, as long as your income exceeds $750k per year or you possess generational wealth.
I too knew a Fig Newton, only his nickname evolved to "Figger". He had a roommate who spent all his time lifting weights and preening in front of mirrors. So it was inevitable that we referred to the duo as "The Figger and the Narcissist". (and yeah, we were college smart-asses)
I lived behind the Orange Curtain from the age of 5 until I was 35 and watched it grow from a sleepy beach county filled with orange groves to a different environment (1985) on its way to what it is today. We still have family there and we think it’s a nice place to visit for a few days… a week at most.

Oakland is a center for medical facilities in the East Bay. It's likely where many people whose parents lived in Berkeley were born.
How did you come to conclude that was what the "right" - whoever that is - is doing?
In my lifetime (and I'm OLD), the only VPs I can think of who did anything worthwhile while VP were Dick Nixon and Dick Cheyney (and it's stretching a bit to include Nixon -- but he DID debate Kruschev about the relative merits of Capitalism and Communism). But so far as I can see, Harris did NOTHING as VP. Yes, Reagan's VP Bush succeeded him, and was one of the best qualified VPs in recent history, but he was a failure are President, and I see no reason to think Kamala would be more qualified. Bush was elected by voters who wanted "another Reagan". Is there a great desire out there for "Another Biden"?

Okay, so she claims Oakland instead of Bezerkely. She probably thunk that up herself. More important - if she wins - who is going to be the real President? The same people (minus Jill) who've been running the country for not-quite-there Joe ? Kamala is incapable of world leadership - a plant in every sense of the word.
If I remember correctly, California limited affirmative action, so UC Berkeley is now largely Asian. That might be one reason why protests there haven't made the headlines lately, the way that those at Stanford, Columbia, and Harvard have. Of course, the Bay Area itself is more left wing than the rest of the country, and the faculty is securely left wing, but maybe Berkeley's on to something.
'More important - if she wins - who is going to be the real President?. The same committee that organized Barak Obama's meteoric rise in net worth since leaving office - now estimated at $400 million. How can that be, one might ask? Connections, baby. Connections. When you're at the top of the Hollywood and Silicon Valley pile, and money is no object, other objects take on more of your attention.
Nice First Amendment ya got there...nice Second Amendment too. Too bad if something were to happen to them..... That would mean nobody could touch us, forever.
