Sunrise getting later........Must be a nice change, getting to loll about some , before hauling oneself out. I usually wake up with a cat nestled on one side, and two dogs on the other, between me and wifey. They're not allowed under the covers of course, but they have their own blankets and they know how to get under them quite adroitly.

If you wanted to do a parody mocking political chants could you do better than “Do Something! Do Something!!”?

So it looks like the stalwart archive site, https://archive.ph/ has been throttled for now. We'll have to find another site to paste our NYT and Washington Post URL's into, in order to read the paywall articles. At first, when I clicked on the site it simply timed out. But now, my Firefox browser first warns me about dire circumstances that could cause my hair to fall out if I proceeded, but when I proceed anyway, I got a '404 NOT FOUND' error window.

Anybody else? https://archive.ph/

My wife celebrated her 70th b.d. today. It was the occasion for a three-hour + phone convo with her oldest (half) brother, and texts, DMs, and other messages that by now must number a hundred. She did carve out some time for dinner at our Italian place, but has otherwise been socially mediated since early this morning.

Exhausting, and makes me glad I keep a low socmed profile. Only the quality institutions.

My favorite chant-wrecking ploy goes like this:
What do we want?
A pony!
When do we want it?
Now!

I have little doubt that within 3 or 4 repetitions, every woman in the crowd would be demanding a pony.

@Aggie: I couldn't get into archive.is or archive.ph for a couple of months. I was able to regain access by changing my dns server. I had to google around to find people talking about the problem and how to fix it. I attempted the fix a couple of times with no success. Third time was the charm. I'm back in business.

I've heard much about the "tyranny of the majority". But it wasn't until I watched this fantastic video, with professor Taleb that the concept of "Minority Rule" got me thinking maybe the emergence of tyranny is a very much more of a possibility than I previously thought.

YouTube: Nassim Taleb - The Secret Rule That RUNS The WORLD

I don't know if this is true, but the claim is the PGA is considering allowing transwomen (men) to play in the women's tour.

The trans agenda is clearly exploiting the "minority rule", the accommodations a functioning civil society reaches and stretching it to breaking point levels.

My 70th is in about 3 weeks on 9/11. For many years after the attacks, we'd celebrate on either the 10th or the 12th.

For this year, we're going to the Washington State Fair in Puyallup. We haven't been to the fair in over a decade. We're going to arrive on the 10th and stay two nights at the Fairfield Inn, about two blocks from the fair entrance. Go to the fair on the 11th and leave on the 12th.

In Wayne County Michigan, over 700 Republicans applied to be poll watchers and out of the 2,350 poll watchers they hired, only 50 out of the 700+ applicants were Republicans.

Too bad we no longer have LLR Chuck available to explain to us that, despite appearances, this is entirely legit.

What a weird way of expressing it. I assume she meant only 50 of the 700+ Repubs were hired.
I thought most states required election officials and watchers from both or all parties be present. Republicans are damned fools if they don't fix this and carry cameras to the counting.

Sorry but I really can’t believe she’s this stupid. It’s simply not possible.
My only explanation is that she’s trying to lose the election.

Maybe she believes she has to talk waaay down to her audiences, and she may be right. Al Gore used to speak really slowly, which often came off as wooden. In contrast, I remember his 2000 convention speech, uninterrupted by applause (wish they all were), as impressive and intelligent.

KAITLAN COLLINS on Bill Maher's show: I think Trump is nervous about the Sept. 10th debate on ABC. I think Trump– I talk to lots of sources in his world. I think he has struggled with it. It’s not just a narrative or a talking point from Democrats. He has struggled with how to combat her. And going into that debate, he does not want to do it.

I think it’s difficult, if not impossible, for him to pull out because his campaign manager printed cards that said “anywhere, time, any place” for President Biden. And it would look weak. But I don’t think he’s looking forward to it.

TRUMP posted on Truth Social:

I watched ABC FAKE NEWS this morning, both lightweight reporter Jonathan Karl’s ridiculous and biased interview of Tom Cotton (who was fantastic!), and their so-called Panel of Trump Haters, and I ask, why would I do the Debate against Kamala Harris on that network? Will panelist Donna Brazil give the questions to the Marxist Candidate like she did for Crooked Hillary Clinton? Will Kamala’s best friend, who heads up ABC, do likewise. Where is Liddle’ George Slopadopolus hanging out now? Will he be involved. They’ve got a lot of questions to answer!!! Why did Harris turn down Fox, NBC, CBS, and even CNN? Stay tuned!!!

That so-called panel of Trump haters that the ex-president referred to included his former Chief of Staff Reince Priebus who is on the show defending him every week.

RFK Jr. Loses Secret Service Protection After Suspending Campaign, Backing Trump

"It’s standard procedure for the Secret Service to end protection when a presidential candidate drops out of the race. Kennedy said that he has suspended his campaign in 10 battleground states but will be on the ballot in the other 40 states during his Aug. 23 address. He encouraged voters to support him in states where he would not be considered a “spoiler” and detract backing for their Trump or Democratic presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris."

This Tom Cotton clip is worth every second of your time, if nothing else it clearly shows how easily the ABC #fakenews anchor slips into the roll of defensive political operative, making arguments that Kamala herself has not made, asserting imaginary statements counter Cotton’s point. Karl flails mightily to defend the nominee but Cotton shows how to do it: don’t accept the Bs premise, don’t back down, stay on the offense.

He left Russia a few years ago when Putin tried the same malarky. Russia tried to block it, but after decades of Soviet rule, the Russian people know how to get around government clamps on information. Finally the Russians gave up and just allowed Telegram, which is where most of the accurate news about the war comes from. Of course mixed in with generous doses of disinformation or just plain lies.

"France is jailing CEO's of social media that allow speech the state disapproves."

While it’s an obvious route to start treating this as a freedom of speech threat let's step back.

Fundamentally, Telegram is not a messenger. It started as one to compete as secure alternative to WA, but really rocketed after two major feature addons:

1. Bot integration – effectively a programmatic way to interact with a user both ways server <-> client.

2. Groups / channels – data delivery mechanism for user group of any size.

With it of the features it became possible to create alternative to message boards, stores for any sort of content. The amount of illegal content on the platform (starting from video content, adult resources, illegal substances etc) is beyond belief. It is by far the easiest way to reaching this side of the web, from any device in a matter of seconds.

When Hydra (largest drug marketplace at that time) was shut down in 2022 it was largely perceived as a massive success of special forces globally. With TG ability to track down underlying owners of the groups is extremely difficult and relies only on human errors. Think TG as a hosting platform based non regular http/s protocols but on proprietary server/client solution. Durov has explicitly stated that he will not facilitate disclosure/admin of any content hosted on the TG network.

Durov portrays himself as a noble freedom speech fighter but ultimately played the same card as with his original project VKontakte which really shot off when it became the largest source of publicly available pirated content with popularity quickly declining once the moderation was introduced.

Won’t be surprised if the story ends with complete segregation of messaging and platform/social services. That should keep the secured messenger on the market whether, but massively restrict availability of platform resources. Whether the TG appeal after will allow it to continue its current growth trajectory its highly questionable though.

Dr Weevil said...

Rich started with a good point, but then ruined it. In fact, "spreading lies, hate, insults" is not illegal except in very specific cases, e.g. lying to a judge under oath is perjury, and insulting a judge in court can be contempt of court. And expressing hate is never illegal, fortunately for all of us, since we all hate some people, things, and political positions (e.g. Illinois Nazis).

The problem with Telegram is that it facilitates child pornography, drug-dealing, and terrorism, and the owner refuses to cooperate with any attempts to prosecute these. The French warrant came from the office dealing with crimes against minors. Telegram is also heavily used as a communication tool by the Russian armed forces in Ukraine, and by Russian agents in Ukraine and elsewhere. The people who are freaking out over Durov's arrest are the likes of Aleksandr Dugin (who also thinks surfers should be put in ghettos for their annoyingly white teeth), all the propagandists on Russian TV, Kim Dotcom, Edward Snowden, and such.
