KH picks Walz.

"Harris picks Tim Walz as VP ahead of multistate tour" (WaPo).

ADDED: This was expected, and what can we say about it?

1. If it were a race for the presidency, Josh Shapiro would be the stronger candidate, but for that reason, I'm happy to see him left out of the position of subordination to the already subordinate person, Kamala Harris, the sitting Vice President, sitting in the shadow of the barely-there President Joe Biden. Better for Josh Shapiro to remain active and independent, accomplishing things in Pennsylvania, and to launch a presidential campaign in his own right in 2028 or 2032. He'll have a stronger position than Tim Walz, if Tim Walz is the sitting Vice President, hoping to run in 2032. A Vice President always looks inert, and he tends to have been chosen to strengthen someone else. Do you realize how rare it is that a sitting Vice President gets elected President? It's only happened twice in U.S. history — 4 times if you count the first 2 Vice Presidents (which you shouldn't, because they did not get there as the winner's running mate).

2. What does this say about Kamala Harris's position on Israel? Is she appeasing the pro-Palestinian forces within the Democratic Party? Was anti-Semitism involved or some kind of idea that Kamala Harris, being triply intersectional, needed a running mate completely composed of traditionally privileged elements?

3. I'm interested in watching the onslaught against Walz. In the last couple weeks, Democrats have unloaded on JD Vance, so it's time for the retaliation. What form will it take? How intense will it be?

4. Or is it better to yawn? From my morning textings:
5. Do I hear a Walz?

6. Is there something about "Tim"? Hillary picked a Tim too. Did you know that "tim" was "A term of personal abuse" in the 1600s (according to the OED). From Ben Jonson's "The Alchemist": "Then you are an Otter, and a Shad, a Whit, A very Tim."

7. The name Hillary has been uttered, and she is summoned. Up she pops, and she is thrilled:

Watch the left get super depressed over Walz. Shapiro had a winning electoral record: Pritzker had his flood of money. Picking an elderly Minnesotan isn't going to move anyone's needle.

But then, Harris did need someone who wouldn't overshadow her.

They figure that most Jews will forgive them for not picking Shapiro; Muslims will never vote for a Jew. Harris is already in enough trouble for being tied to Biden who gives lip service to supporting Israel and for being married to a Jew.

Chadron State v. Yale Law.

It will be an epic beatdown.

Walz was born in West Point, NE and grew up in Valentine. He's really a Cornhusker, but mostly he's a tool for the teachers' unions. JD needs to crucify Walz on his mishandling of the Floyd riots and keeping kids unnecessarily out of school for two years.

Walz is a putz, subservient beta-male, progressive-liberal from Blue Floyd state, and former HS football coach? So he won't outshine Kamala, but only because hos credentials are weaker than hers. Oy.

Neither will quite a few college students. Pro-Israel legislators obscure how profoundly unpopular Israel is among the international left. Globalist oligarchs and their tools plan to ban TikTok, which only heightens that tension.

Anyways, JB Pritzker was attacking Shapiro pretty heavily. No way was Harris going to give Republicans the line "JD Vance was in the Marines, and Josh Shapiro served the IDF." But Muslims aren't going to be appeased merely by dragging out another boring white guy. Harris can either act against Netanyahu, or watch Palestine supporters stand aside.

Don't worry, I'm sure Jews will heavily back the Democrats, as ever.

Was anti-Semitism involved or some kind of idea that Kamala Harris, being triply intersectional, needed a running completely composed of traditionally privileged elements?

The anti-sematic are now the traditionally privileged elements, intersectionally aligned with the Jew hating KKK of old.

Walz is now the second white guy [Tim Kane first] to be the DEI hire for a horrible Democrat female candidate. As if white men fall for this bullshit.

OMG. Kamabla picked a guy who looks like ME. I'm switching my vote!

Plainly so. Why talk Shapiro up and leak the two weird stories yesterday, one a video promoting "VP Shapiro and president Harris" like they did, and one questioning his judgement for penning an article critical of Palestine and the two-state solution? This was a public repudiation of the pro-Israel and neutral wings of the Party.

Kamala is already remaking the Democrat party in her image, hardline pro-terror and vehemently anti-Israel (as also reflected in her husbands work at Venable representing the PLO and Qatar).

You skipped pro-child mutilation and pro-puberty blocker. The signing ceremony making Minnesota a "sanctuary state" for "gender affirming care" was sick. Many children under ten present. Six year olds...etc. Walz is a twisted, evil man.

Tim Walz executive order signing ceremony guaranteeing child mutilation in Minnesota.

Evil disguises itself with soft language like “gender affirming care” or “reproductive rights”. Althouse has a problem with the word “normal” as a linguistic disguise. The terms above promote the ghoulish as "normal" activity.

Let's face it there were very few Peter Principle governors to choose from who would not outshine the top of the ticket. She picked a bland one who happens to share her radical support of rioters. Now we await the ostensible reason to shut everything down like in 2020 in order to make the fraud easier.

Will it work again? None of us really know, but I'm still optimistic Trump can push the turnout beyond the margin of fraud. It's been twelve years since Hugh Hewitt wrote his book "If it's not Close, They can't Cheat" for any of the LIV here who think Trump is the first to assert Democrats have a vast and well-oiled cheating system. (There are I admit a few idiots who will gullibly believe that addresses where 4000 individuals are registered to vote is "normal" and nothing to be concerned about. If Walz would ever have to serve as president if (God forbid ) anything happened to Harris, the nation would be in good hands, unlike the horror of a JD Vance becoming president, which is more likely considering Trump’s age. Or could be they thought having a Jewish VP-Jewish wife with a Hindu POTUS candidate married to a Jew was a little too much. While such a four-some would look look like the Yale Law School, it defintitely would NOT look like America. Especially since 1/2 of the Harris-Biden cabinet is Jewish, including the AG, sec of treasury, Sec of state, DHS Secretary, along with a Jewish CIA Director and Jewish WH Chief of staff.

Walz will do well enough. He reminds me of Pawlenty. Bland and forgettable.

John Althouse Cohen said...

Do you realize how rare it is that a sitting Vice President gets elected President? It's only happened twice in U.S. history

That's very skewed. First, why should we care only about a "sitting" VP being elected? That leaves out people who still used their VP position to be elected president, just not in the same year they were VP, like Biden.

Also, most of "U.S. history" was before mass media as we know it, so that shouldn't count. The media environment completely changes how the VP can benefit from their position and win the presidency. People in 1800 or 1900 weren't watching the VP on TV or the internet.

If we look only at modern times (say, FDR onward), almost every VP of a president who served at least 8 years ended up winning a presidential election when they tried:

Obama's VP (Biden) won

Reagan's VP (Bush) won

Eisenhower's VP (Nixon) won

FDR's VP (Truman) won

The only exception is Clinton's VP (Gore), but he lost on the narrowest possible technical grounds in an election that was a virtual tie, coming down to just a few hundred votes in one huge state.

That's a pretty impressive success rate, with a very small sample size.

"Tim Walz, the Governor of Minnesota, faced controversy regarding his military service in the Minnesota National Guard. Allegations surfaced that he misrepresented his military rank and abruptly retired to avoid deployment to Iraq. Critics accused Walz of falsely claiming the rank of command sergeant major, which he never officially completed the requirements for, leading to his reduction in rank to master sergeant upon retirement. Additionally, Walz's retirement shortly after his unit received orders for deployment raised suspicions that he left to avoid active duty."

This will not sit well with veterans, especially those who were called up and served their time.

I guess Democrats don't consider this in any way damaging?

This is not the choice of people who think they have to convince the American people to vote for them.

I'd say this ensures Kamala's defeat, but the Dems actually don't have to convince people to vote for them so...

If democrats actually thought they could get people to vote for them it would have been Moore, cooper, or beshear.

Those guys all pulled themselves out of contention.

I think it is interesting that Shapiro humiliated himself to the extent that he did.

No that isn’t true. Wisconsinites don’t love people from Illinois, but are fine with people from Minnesota. A lot of our young Wisconsin people go to the U of MN, my two grandchildren included.

Walz was essentially a white flag...The democrats have no intention of actually trying to get people to vote for them....They are 100% relying on mail in ballots and fraud.

You're right. The absentee voter fraud in the swing states in everything. Everything else just keeps us distracted from the biggest issue, just like in 2020.

I always assumed that Shapiro would refuse the position if it were offered. Why would he want to play second fiddle to a non-entity like Kamala? Best case scenario, she wins and he gets to be vice president with very poor prospects for anything more. Worst case, and most likely, she loses and he's finished politically. This is perfect for Walz.

JUST IN: Media buzz is rising that Kamala Harris is selecting Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her VP choice.

Who is Tim Walz? Let's take a quick look:

• Fueled BLM Riots in 2020
• Rioters looted and wrecked Minneapolis
• Change MN state flag to resemble Somalia's
• K*lled old people with Cov*d nursing home scandal
• MN a 'gr**mer friendly' LGBTQIA+ "sanctuary" state
• Pushes youth trans surgery, 'hormone therapy' agenda
• Soldiers accused Walz of embellishing and selectively omitting facts about his military career
• Fellow soldiers accused him of "quitting" on them
• Got DUI in 1995 going 96mph in a 55 speed zone
• Praises socialism

Kamala's "perfect" running mate? 🤔

StoughtonSconnie said...

This is an unforced error by Kamala. Of course it won’t be reported as such. 98.2% of the coverage will be about how “moderate” the nut is.
The commercials basically write themselves. Show Minneapolis burning, show Walz saying that essentially this was a deserved result, show Kamala urging people to bail out the looters, and simply say this is what they want for America. So of course I expect Trump to spend 147 million in adds bitching about how Brian Kemp didn’t support him.

Well, that's good news. Choosing two city-burning, anti-semites clarifies the issues in the race. But everyone fell off that turnip truck some ways back and they're kind of bruised. Not the moment for a guy who looks like the winner in a why-I-still-drink-Bud-Lite contest.

All replaced by part time jobs and most taken by illegals who are low paid.

There's a Kamala ad in heavy rotation in Wisconsin right now in which she says she's for an 'economy where workers only need one job.'

Does she think voters don't know who's been in the White House for the last four years?

Steve said...

Kamala could side with Jews or rioters. In today's Democratic Party rioters were the safer bet.

This is choice made from fear rather than hope. Her polling of the Dem base and progressives especially must have looked bleak for her to choose the progressive pick. Walz will wring out the cat lady left and leave the working class males nowhere to go but to Trump. Walz also appeals to the antisemite progressives (but I repeat myself) because a Jewish VP would certainly lose them Michigan.

Kamala had a choice of rousing her base or expanding it. She chose rousing it. Peak Kamala is past and now she's counting electoral votes without Pennsylvania in her column.

1. Yes, this does leave the way open for Shapiro to run in 2028, unburdened by what has been, in a year that might be more favorable to him.

2. It's certainly shameful if Judaism or Jewishness has become a bar to holding higher office. However, Shapiro's first job in DC (according to Wikipedia) was at the Israeli embassy. His job was to present the Israeli point of view in the Hasbara department. Isn't that something that should raise eyebrows, or at least attract notice?

3. When a party is as unified as the Democrats it's not always easy to tell who are the ideologue/purists and who are the pragmatist/opportunists. They all go along with the party line -- even the president -- so how do you tell what one of them really feels or thinks or wants? Does it matter? The grandfatherly guy will do the same things as the purported firebrand.

4. GHW Bush is still the first VP since Van Buren to go directly from the vice presidency to the presidency. Truman was in the same position as Lyndon Johnson. He wasn't a VP trying to take a step up, but someone who was already president with all that implies. That Nixon or Biden was able to make it to the White House after a hiatus, doesn't necessarily inspire confidence. A candidate can't usually expect the field to be cleared for him the way it was for Biden.

5) Hillary Clinton's picture: does America really need another creepy sniffer of children's hair?

Inga, thank you for pointing out that Wal is a sniper.

Or "hunter" as we call them when referring to civilians.

I had never thought of hunters as snipers until I saw a discussion over the weekend. Key takeaways

1 the us has more snipers/hunters than all the world's militaries combined. 20-30mm snipers in the US.

2 the main difference between military snipers is intended target. Techniques, hide, stalk, get close, be patient, marksmanship are very similar. Civilian snipers get considerably more practice with killing living, moving targets

Good to have a candidate who appreciates that.

The most powerful, sophisticated and experienced military in the world was routed by a bunch of poorly armed civilians. Essentially a "sniper behind every blade of grass." quoting from memory.

Poor Shapiro. To paraphrase Churchill on Chamberlain: You had a choice between debasing your Judaism thereby achieving higher office and being a proud Jew. You chose to debase your Judaism and you will still not achieve higher office. Meanwhile, Harris chooses a batshit crazy lefty from a safe dem state showing that 1) she really is afraid of losing Michigan, 2) she really hates Israel and Jews who love Israel, and 3) she wants someone batshit crazy just like her OVER a clearly better choice who would have delivered the most important swing state. Vance turned out to be a bad pick for Trump but this is even worse for Harris. Excellent - I think we have reached Peak Kamala!

Shapiro is the obviously better choice, being a popular and reasonably successful governor of a key swing state. It is actually baffling that Shapiro would even want to be the VP, given he has a resume that would make him a potential presidential candidate in the future and if Harris loses that probably torpedoes his future. Walz really has nothing to recommend him, though I suppose we could say the same about Harris.

I mean, sure, it is possible that there is some other reason to not select Shapiro, but given that Shapiro was spending the past week trying to backpedal his Jewishness for all it was worth, I think the answer is obvious. Also, inconvenient. You do not have to like the conclusion to understand it is likely true.

I've been reading the Althouse blog for many years now but never have gotten so much insight into anti-semitism as I've been seeing lately. Not subtle. For example:

RCOCEAN II said...
"When a POTUS candidate married to jew, an ethnic group that comprises 2 pecent of the population, doesn't pick a Jewish Governor with a Jewish wife to the be the VP, it can only mean one thing:
Antisemitism.
Jews are so superior that if aren't over-represented in positions of power by least a factor 20x, its due to Jew hatred."

Obviously sarcasm, what he is actually saying is that Jews are over-represented in positions of power.

and he's answered by Derve Swanson:

"... We're not obliged to support any immigrant's religious homestate: America has supported Israel long enough. Let Israel sacrifice and build up their defense industry for the years to come. America can no longer afford to support their wars at the rate Netanyahu is picking them..."

We know that on 10/7/23 Israel was attacked by Hamas, which is supported by Iran, and has been attacked by Hezbollah since 10/8/23, also supported by Iran. But here Swanson is accusing Netanyahu of instigating the wars against Israel.

IOW, here's another common theme: all the wars are always the fault of the Jews.

--------------

What do I think is the reason Harris didn't pick Shapiro? I agree with the professor. Shapiro is better off waiting to run for president in four years. And even though he's a loyal party member and would have accepted if asked to be VP, most of Harris's strongest supporters don't want anyone with the slightest appearance of supporting Israel. Despite the fact that Shapiro was willing to apologize for his honest and prescient essay -- written when he was 20 years old, 31 years ago, where he noted that the Palestinian leadership and people are not interested in living in peace or a two state solution, he is now touting the D. party line about a two state solution. And Shapiro has also recently condemned Netanyahu. He's definitely not strongly pro-Israel. So I think if he were not Jewish the left would not have objected to him.

I don't think that Harris made that decision for Walz based on anti-semitism but chose an easier partner. He's less of a distraction.

who-knew said...

IMHO this cements the Democrats descent into the party of antisemitism. ROCEAN can try to cover for them all day but there is no rational reason to chose Walz over Shapiro unless you're worried about losing the votes of the antisemitic Somali's in MN, the antisemetic Arabs in MI, and the antisemitic college students across the nation.
