I've been suspecting that Kamala Harris will back out of the debate with Trump.

Why should she expose herself when running on nothing — AKA "joy" — has been working so well?

But suddenly here's news that Trump might be in the process of weaseling out of the debate:

At CNN: "Trump campaign casts fresh doubt on September debate with Harris over microphone dispute." We're told that "a source familiar with the matter" is telling CNN that "Trump’s campaign is casting fresh doubt on whether the September 10th debate will take place on ABC." Trump himself has written: "Why would I do the Debate against Kamala Harris on that network?" But what is the "microphone dispute"? I'm seeing: "The Harris campaign is requesting that ABC and other networks seeking to host a potential October debate keep microphones on, according to a senior campaign official." That relates to an October debate, and the doubt is coming from the Harris campaign, not Trump's. And isn't it funny that the tables have turned on who wants the microphones to shut off?

At The Washington Post: "Trump suggests he might skip ABC debate with Harris/The Sept. 10 debate with ABC is the only one both campaigns have agreed to do with one of the major networks." This piece begins with the Trump statement, "Why would I do the Debate against Kamala Harris on [ABC]?" And this article too shows the Harris campaign attempting to change the rules: "Brian Fallon, the Harris campaign’s senior adviser for communications, said in a statement, that the campaign has told ABC and other networks that 'both candidates’ mics should be live throughout the full broadcast.'"

At Politico: "Playbook: Scoop: The secret debate about the Trump-Harris debate." Here, we're told that before Trump published that question —  "Why would I do the Debate against Kamala Harris on [ABC]" — "the two campaigns hit an impasse over the rules of the debate, according to four sources familiar with the issue." Politico isn't pointing at either campaign. They hit an impasse together. But it's the Harris campaign that's trying to change the rules: "Harris’ campaign wants the mics to be hot at all times during the ABC debate, as has historically been the case at presidential debates." A Trump adviser, Jason Miller, is citing other rule changes the Harris campaign has supposedly asked for: "a seated debate, with notes, and opening statements." He says: "This seems to be a pattern for the Harris campaign. They won’t allow Harris to do interviews, they won’t allow her to do press conferences, and now they want to give her a cheat-sheet for the debate. My guess is that they’re looking for a way to get out of any debate with President Trump."

Aha! That's been my suspicion: It's Harris who's trying to get by without debating.

Funny how Trump is expected to debate on a leftist democrat platform - but no democrat will ever debate on a platform that offers honesty and a fair debate.

Trump is baiting the network news organizations by asking the question at all. And they've fallen for it, screaming that, by asking the question, Trump is backing out. Out over their skis again. With the networks having done their part, the Harris campaign is sliding into the draft position to see if they can finesse avoiding the debates altogether, by blaming Trump.

Watch for the Trump response.

How odd that Trump’s campaign team would want the mics turned off. Are they afraid he can’t act presidential for duration of the debate? I think Harris will do the debate either way, mics off, mics on.

Given Harris' outstanding debating experience when she ran for President in 2020, Trump the felon is obviously afraid to take on a relentless prosecutor.

The Harris campaign wants Trump to not have a microphone at all. That seems fair.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

Not surprised you drew that inference from the way it was framed, Althouse, but last week Trump agreed to Harris's conditions. The ABC debates was set. Or so it seemed. Now this week, her spokesdude Ian Sams has asked for a NEW concession, about the microphones. Because Harris, as you expected does not want to debate, but she wants to have it framed by friendly media as if Trump is backing out. Why can't the media just hold her to the agreement they made last week?

We ALL know the answer to that.

Well I clicked through to comment after reading as far as "But suddenly here's news that Trump might be in the process of weaseling out of the debate" but obviously Althouse had no trouble interpreting both Pravda and Izvestia, once again proving the recently coined adage, "Never trust the headline." My apologies for any momentary doubt in the host's reading comprehension.

Yancey Ward said...

Not odd at all- It was a huge mistake for the Biden people to demand that in the June debate. I think the Trump realized it benefitted Trump far more than Biden and so did the Harris puppeteers- that is why they want it changed back.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

Ha! Tulsi shredded her in about 30 seconds. Kamala's only "moment" in the debate was calling Biden a racist for opposing her school bus ride.

Maybe Trump is afraid the Harris campaign will release a motorized fly to land on his head, like the fly that was frolicking on Pence’s head during their debate.

Yancey Ward said...

Neither campaign can withdraw from the debate is my opinion. Trump would be smart to simply hold firm on the same rules as those from the June debate with Biden- those rules benefitted Trump greatly. Make Harris demand the changes and withdraw if she wants to chicken out.

About the "hard-nosed prosecutor" meme: How long was Harris a working prosecutor and how long was she an administrator and supervisor of prosecutors? How many cases did she actually try? How many were pled out? How many were high profile cases or cases where the outcome was in doubt? Debates are different from courtroom trials, as I discovered to my embarrassment when I tried to "Perry Mason" the middle school debate.

Quayle said...

The whole format and concept is stupid. Why do we use the term debate when it is Q&A from the press? Why allow the press to even be involved? Are the candidates incapable of asking questions to each other?

I’d have 2 podiums, 2 “count-down” clocks each set to 1 hour of time, and the mics on at all times. When a candidate talks, their clock runs. When their clock is out of time, their mic gets shut off. If they are both talking, both clocks run. Then they just have a discussion and ask each other questions.

Gusty Winds said...

Being reported on X that the Harris campaign is requesting she be able to have a "cheat sheet." She can't speak off the top of her head about policy.

In a late Sunday evening post, Donald Trump complained about ABC News, hinted that ABC might rig the debate, and questioned the idea of debating Kamala Harris.

Now he has changed the argument to whether or not is a new bunch of bullshit today. I don't think that it makes any sense to debate the trailing candidate this late in the game and guess who is behind the eightball. Michael Tomansky gets it right:
"
Harris’s campaign so far has been a work of genius on several levels, but maybe the most ingenious stroke of all has been the decision to mock Trump—to present him not only as someone to fear, but also to ridicule. Harris perfectly encapsulated this two-pronged attack in these memorable lines from her acceptance speech: “In many ways, Donald Trump is an unserious man. But the consequences — but the consequences of putting Donald Trump back in the White House are extremely serious. … Just imagine Donald Trump with no guardrails.”

But the emphasis has been on ridicule (Tim Walz’s “weird” comment, Maryland Governor Wes Moore’s jab at Trump’s bone spurs, Barack Obama’s hilarious hand gesture when he was talking about Trump’s obsession with crowd size). It’s great on three levels. The first is that it must drive Trump nuts, and when he goes nuts, he says especially nutty things. Second, it’s arguably more persuasive to swing voters than calling Trump a fascist. Trump is a fascist, make no mistake. But he’s also ridiculous. Mocking him over his Hannibal Lecter obsession will stick in apolitical people’s minds . . . . Do we really want a president who thinks an eater of human flesh, however fictional, was misunderstood?

Thirdly, ridicule makes him weaker. Ridicule makes him small. Ridicule makes him desperate. He’ll try to respond with ridicule of his own, but he is not a clever man. He’s a stupid man. He has no wit. He has no sense of mischief. He doesn’t read. Against Harris, he looks old (because he is), confused (because he is), far less intelligent than she (because he is), and less genuinely patriotic (because he is).He doesn’t think beyond first reactions. And the best way to ensure that he stays off his game? Mockery. Bone spurs. Orange tanning spray. Hannibal the Cannibal. Sharks versus electrocution.

I didn't like it the last time, but it worked out fine. I mean, ask Biden how it worked out. It was fine, and I think it should be the same. We agreed to the same rules, same rules, and same specifications, and I think that's probably what it should be, but they're trying to change it. The truth is they're trying to get out of it because she doesn't want to debate. She's not a good debater. She's not a smart person. She doesn't want to debate.”

Funny, the muted mic rule was introduced to stop candidates from interupting and speaking over one another, which is Trump's forte and the reason why the rule was introduced. Now Trump wants to keep the rule and Harris wants to change it, even taunting that Trump " should stop hiding behind the mute button".

My guess is that Harris doesn't want a substantive debate and wants to get into a verbal brawl with Trump, hoping to push his buttons and make him say crass, unsympathic things that would alienate undecided voters. She probably has some zingers she's hoping to use that will make for a great sound bite.

He should restate that he is still willing to debate anytime under the previously agreed to rules and then leave the studio.

Ds wanted the microphones muted for the debates because they thought it would hurt Trump if he couldn't launch zingers like he did at Hillary. So they muted the microphones and Trump looked even better going relatively-easy on the dementia patient.

Since that backfired, now the Ds want microphones on to attempt another go at "I AM SPEAKING" and whine about Trump's being mean to a girl. They also want a seated debate with notes because that's what worked against Pence. The only problem is that those weren't the original terms, so they have to frame it as "Trump's people are scared to have the microphones on!"

Ds play Catch-22 and Calvinball; Trump plays "please don't fling me in the briar patch."

Delgado on Monday filed a federal lawsuit in Manhattan alleging discrimination from the Trump campaign and transition team, as well as three men who once held top spots in Mr. Trump's White House — Stephen Bannon, Sean Spicer and Reince Priebus.

Delgado "felt extremely humiliated, degraded, victimized, embarrassed and emotionally distressed" by the treatment she faced after announcing her pregnancy, the lawsuit says. It also claims the alleged discrimination from Trump officials was "malicious, willful, outrageous, and conducted with full knowledge of the law."

“ The lawsuit adds another layer of legal drama to the affair between Delgado and Miller, who are now locked in a custody battle. Miller filed a libel lawsuit against the now-defunct news site Splinter for reporting on a court filing from the custody battle, which said Miller secretly slipped an abortion pill to a woman in another affair. Miller denied the allegation and is appealing a judge's ruling dismissing the libel suit.”

This is nuts. If you want the power of a US President, you absolutely have to participate in the debates. You can’t limit yourself to one debate, then ask for all these concessions because you have no confidence and/or want to be set up to spring a trap on your opponent. You have to prove you can speak with ease and clarity so that we know you can do so with any allies or rivals, and with us down the road. It’s a basic requirement! You have to earn our f*ing trust in this department. Otherwise, you’re disqualifying yourself.

Oh my gosh, it gets even worse. Yup, that Jason Miller is a real stand up guy.

“ Jason Miller, a political strategist and ally of former president Donald Trump, has denied allegations by a former campaign staffer that he raped her on several occasions while they were having an affair.

In the latest in a long string of litigation, A.J. Delgado, a lawyer and senior adviser during Trump's first presidential run, claimed Miller engaged in a "cycle of sexual coercion, rape, sexual assault, abuse, battery, sexual harassment, and sex trafficking" during the time they were together in a lawsuit filed on Wednesday, according to the Daily Beast, which first reported on the story.

Delgado became pregnant and later gave birth to Miller's child following the affair. Since then, she has lodged several legal claims against Miller, who remains a senior adviser to the former president as he attempts another run for the White House.”

Jason Miller signed secret deal to stay with DC-based Teneo after ‘resigning’ and then appeared to misrepresent employment status.

Jason Miller – who remains close to Trump, and who today serves as a senior adviser to the former president – also later appears to have misled a Florida court about this employment status, asserting in a sworn statement that he could no longer comply with a court order requiring him to pay child-support payments because of an alleged “major financial setback” and was effectively out of work.“

The Harris campaign knows that the worst moments of her vice presidency were when Harris did unscripted interviews. They KNOW that and it can’t be hidden.

If you understand that Harris does not want to give an interview, under any conditions then all of this - the demands to change rules, more conditions, more backtracking - all of it makes sense.

She is nothing more than a cackling, empty Pantsuited Pantload.

The Harris campaign wants a live mic so when Trump interrupts she can eat up time by saying "I'm talking now! I'm talking now!" And when he's talking she will interrupt him constantly with "THAT'S A LIE!" Her campaign no doubt thinks that will make her look tough. It's all theater.

Trump had "guardrails," and he'll have them again if he's elected again. I'm more concerned about Biden -- and now Harris -- not having effective "guardrails."

"Insult Trump enough so that it gets under his skin and drives him crazy," may be an effective political strategy, but saying that and relishing it just indicates how poor a case there is for Harris. If we wake up in 2025 and find that we're still in the same mess -- or even a worse one -- because the Democrats were able to make Donald Trump mad, we'll all regret it.

Lazarus said...

We need new punctuation marks to use when people say things that a candidate "should" do, when really it's the very last thing the candidate should do.

Breezy said...

The longer Harris refuses to speak or be interviewed by msm, the more money the Dems rake in. So one thought is that they know KH will legit lose in a landslide - they don’t care - they just want the laundered cash for the down ballot campaigns. That is why they booted Biden, or so they said. So, the faster she fails, the better for those of us who want to change direction, presidential and down ballot.

"The pair appeared at the National Guard Association of the United States on the third anniversary of the Aug. 26, 2021, suicide bombing at Hamid Karzai International Airport, which killed 13 U.S. service members and more than 100 Afghans. Gabbard accompanied Trump earlier Monday to Arlington National Cemetery, when the former president laid wreaths in honor of three of the slain service members — Sgt. Nicole Gee, Staff Sgt. Darin Hoover and Staff Sgt. Ryan Knauss.

On Monday, Gabbard praised Trump for “having the courage to meet with adversaries, dictators, allies and partners alike in the pursuit of peace, seeing war as a last resort." She condemned the Democratic White House for the U.S. now "facing multiple wars on multiple fronts in regions around the world and closer to the brink of nuclear war than we ever have been before.”

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The campaigns of Donald Trump and Kamala Harris clashed on Monday over next month's U.S. presidential debate, with the vice president's team seeking a return to open microphones while her Republican rival threatened to pull out entirely
Harris spokesperson Brian Fallon said on Monday the vice president's campaign wanted the broadcaster to keep the candidates' microphones on throughout the event, not muted when their opponent was speaking as in the last presidential debate. So-called "hot mics" can help or hurt political candidates, catching off-hand comments that sometimes were not meant for the public.
Reuters
"The Vice President is ready to deal with Trump’s constant lies and interruptions in real time. Trump should stop hiding behind the mute button," Fallon said in a statement.
Trump campaign senior adviser Jason Miller said in a statement they had already agreed to the same terms as CNN's June debate, which had muted microphones, adding: "We said no changes to the agreed-upon rules."
But Trump later told reporters that he preferred to have his microphone kept on, adding that he did not like it muted last time and that he was not preparing much for the face-off against his new rival.
"Doesn't matter to me. I'd rather have it, probably, on. But the agreement was that it would be the same as it was last time," Trump said.
Of course the trump team has to protect him from himself because he cant shut up and of course we would say he dont care,if its no big deal LEAVE MICS HOT! and listen to the madman!

“WASHINGTON — More than 200 Republicans who previously worked for either former President George W. Bush, the late Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., or Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president in an open letter Monday obtained exclusively by USA TODAY.

The letter from alums of the three Republican presidential nominees prior to former President Donald Trump comes on the heels of a Democratic National Convention last week in Chicago that showcased Republican detractors of the GOP nominee. At least five former aides to former President George H.W. Bush also signed the letter, which has 238 signatures in all.”

Why wouldn't she debate? Romney dominated/crushed Obama in their first debate (at least according to post-debate polls) and bested him again in their second debate. It made absolutely no difference that Romney was tremendously more intelligent than Obama. Obama still won.

And even if Kamala shows up, she is still going to avoid the debate. Foreign policy? Trump is Islamophobic. Taxes? Trump is a privileged, cis, White male billionaire. Or she'll tell him he’s racist or sexist or homophobic or transphobic or whatever. Or maybe she's too outraged by Trump's arguments to actually engage them.
