"And let us choose inclusion over retribution. Let us choose common sense over nonsense...."

"And let us choose the sweet promise of tomorrow over the bitter return to yesterday. We won't go back. We won't be set back, bullied back, kicked back. We're not going back."

Oprah at the DNC:

It's a familiar Democratic Party trope: We go forward and Republicans go back. Back where? I remember when Joe Biden came out with "They're going to put y'all back in chains." So: back to slavery times. Who was that dreaded Republican racist who was "going to put y'all back in chains"? It wasn't that terrible ogre Donald Trump. It was Mitt Romney.

That bullshit worked then and it will work now. It should not, but it will. This is my default, I know, but we are fucked.

Oprah is on a list as the wealthiest female celebrity in the U.S. Not in the Forbes 400. Forbes says she is #14 in "America's Self-Made Women." No doubt she has experienced bigotry. But she has flirted with the notion that you achieve the goals you focus on, more or less single-mindedly; failure results from a lack of focus. She has been accused of saying losers have focussed on being losers, being romantically attached to bad people, even getting sick (or just fat). In a way an extreme example of American motivational speaking, but surely she has lived the dream. Yet she falls back on group whining. Obama keeps implying Jim Crow is still around, or just around the corner. A disgraceful failure to give the U.S. the praise it deserves on such matters.

In what way has Democrats avoided being the party of retribution? I’m not saying Trump won’t seek it, but he would only be playing tit for tat.

Breezy said...

I need specifics. What exactly was she talking about not going back to? Without specifics, it’s a head game. The listener will fill in anything they think the person is talking about and then go along with it.

The power of envy is astonishing. We live in the most prosperous, fattest society in human history, and the Democratic Party is running on a platform of inciting furious envy, and racial and sexual hatred. And, by the way, the DNC/Intel cartel just tried to murder Trump. Don’t tell me to prove it. That’s an insult. It’s obvious who ordered this hit job.

If by "yesterday" she means the last 3 1/2 years, then I agree.

The projection of the Demmies' own faults on that stage at the United Center is astonishing...positively Soviet. And the use of the memory hole to tidy up the political landscape is Orwellian.

Take me back
Take me way, way, way back
On Hyndford Street
Where you could feel the silence at half past eleven
On long summer nights
As the wireless played Radio Luxembourg
And the voices whispered across Beechie River
In the quietness as we sank into restful slumber in the silence
And carried on dreaming in God

The continued BS narrative about systemic racism in the United States is ludicrous (who also happens to be a Black millionaire entertainer). Great scam though. Keeps the DEI gravy train rolling.

Do you have a link to any of that Vogon poetry? Sounds interesting.

Poor little oppressed Oprah, along with poor little oppressed Obamas really lay it on thick that you can become billionaires lying to white America, and still cry about how oppressed you are. These fools make me sick. I can't wait for the backlash, and their comeuppance.

Democrats want to rebrand accountability as “retribution.” I think when people screw up their jobs should be at risk. Even more so when the screw up appears deliberate.

$7.5 billion for half a million charging stations produced only eight. A $5 billion program to get school districts to replace diesel buses with electric netted only 60 buses? Shouldn’t someone pay with their job for spending do much to achieve so little? And jail, if corruption was involved.

That song is impressive in it's delusion. Only a woman who lived in a coddling western country could listen to this. It is fascinating. 1972 even. That is about when things started going down with feminism.

This would anger women in Afghanistan or most places in the world who have to deal with the truth. I don't think men are doing women any favors letting western women delude themselves with this garbage.

I wasn't able to watch last night, but my husband did. He liked, especially, Oprah and Walz and the governor of Maryland, but he said they were all feel-good and no vision or plan. It sounds to me as if they were also, like both Obamas' speeches, scoldy - we should all do this, not that. In the name of unification, I know, and I don't know how you get around it, but it's hard to believe the calls for unification are aimed at Democrats - which means I'm not (ahem, not even close to) sold on the scold.

Stale campaign rhetoric. When I hear stuff like this now, I wonder what it would sound like translated into Bidenese. The guy who said "We choose truth over facts" could do remarkable things with plasterboard platitudes like these.

There are online English to Bidenese translators, but none of them captures the man's ability to mangle things. The translation into the language of the late British queen is pretty good, though:

Might I propose that we embrace inclusivity in lieu of retribution, and favour reasoned judgement over folly.

It is a GK Chesterton standard, that when something becomes the conventional wisdom, it is more likely the opposite of the truth. It is only what people want to believe and will move heaven and earth to make look true. I don't know if I want Donald Trump's future, but he is clearly oriented to a future, not a past. The older Democrats want to go back to 1992, the younger ones to 2008. They want nothing to do with any future whatsoever. Tim Walz is reminiscent of Eugene McCarthy, Kamala Harris of Angela Davis. If you want to push that forward a generation it's Walter Mondale and Oprah Winfrey. Two generations, it;s Paul Simon (not the singer, dammit) and Rachel Maddow.

I'm 71 and out-of touch and I don't even know who the generation 3 Democrats are. But I will will bet that they are the same damn thing and already out-of-date.

They are all past their sell-by date by a fair margin.
