Trump's convention speech had 2 phases, both brilliant, but very different.

In the first phase, Trump describes the assassination attempt from his perspective and for what he asserts is the last time:
So many people have asked me what happened. “Tell us what happened, please.” And therefore, I will tell you exactly what happened, and you’ll never hear it from me a second time, because it’s actually too painful to tell. It was a warm, beautiful day in the early evening....

This fills 20 minutes and segues into an unrushed tribute to the man who died and the 2 other men who were injured. There's an iconic stage prop, Corey Comperatore represented in the form of his empty helmet and jacket. Trump kisses Comperatore's head and pats him on the shoulder then returns to the lectern to lead a silent prayer. Again unrushed (but not overlong). We see different members of the audience in different attitudes of prayer. (Jared Kushner, eyes wide open, looked straight ahead.)

The first phase continued with the uplifting abstract material that Trump had promised to deliver. I've copied this section in full:

Our resolve is unbroken and our purpose is unchanged, to deliver a government that serves the American people better than ever before. Nothing will stop me in this mission, because our vision is righteous and our cause is pure.

You don't usually see the word "pure." I remember when Jimmy Carter said "purity" in 1976 and caught no end of trouble. I remember Jack D. Ripper raving about the "pure blood of pure Americans."

Back to Trump:

No matter what obstacle comes our way, we will not break. We will not bend. We will not back down and I will never stop fighting for you, your family and our magnificent country. Never.

That's the fight theme. It's not all sweetness and light in this part of the speech. By the way, if Trump critics want to bemoan Trump's embrace of "fight," they'd better remember Hillary Clinton's theme song, "Fight Song" (which is about the individual's personal fight to succeed for herself ("I might only have one match/But I can make an explosion")).

Back to Trump:

And everything I have to give with all of the energy and fight in my heart and soul, I pledge to our nation tonight. Thank you very much. I pledge that to our nation. We’re going to turn our nation around and we’re going to do it very quickly. Thank you.

This election should be about the issues facing our country and how to make America successful, safe, free and great again.

In an age when our politics too often divide us, now is the time to remember that we are all fellow citizens — we are one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

There's the unity theme, but it is immediately followed by a pointed attack on the Biden administration for using the criminal process to punish and debilitate its political rivals:

And we must not criminalize dissent or demonize political disagreement, which is what’s been happening in our country lately, at a level that nobody has ever seen before. In that spirit, the Democrat party should immediately stop weaponizing the justice system and labeling their political opponent as an enemy of democracy. Especially since that is not true. In fact, I am the one saving democracy for the people of our country.

That's only consistent with a unity theme if you see it as calling Democrats to stop causing disunity, and that is how Trump explains it (after a paragraph on his recent big win in court):

And very big news, as you probably just read. On Monday, a major ruling was handed down from a highly respected federal judge in Florida, Aileen Cannon, finding that the prosecutor and the fake documents case against me were totally unconstitutional, and the entire case was thrown out of court. With all of that publicity — thrown out of court.
If Democrats want to unify our country, they should drop these partisan witch hunts, which I’ve been going through for approximately eight years. And they should do that without delay and allow an election to proceed that is worthy of our people. We’re going to win it anyway. But worthy of our people.

And that is the end of the first phase. The second phase, which goes on for over an hour, is Trump in rally mode. It begins with introductions of various people in the audience, beginning with Melania and going on naming and discussing particular people as if there is all the time in the world.

And how good was Dana? Was Dana good? I mean, wasn’t he good?

He's got 3 paragraphs about Dana White! I'll bet a lot of people checked out at this point. Did CNN et al. watch their audience decline and wonder when he'd stop and give them the chance to critique him? The answer is after midnight, because Trump will hold the floor and give everyone as much as they want. The true Trump lovers can drink it up until they can't take any more, and everyone else can fall asleep or change the channel whenever they want. Trump is running out the clock. And he's doing it in high style. I watch until the end, and the end was 2 hours past my usual bedtime.

I liked when he spotted the Wisconsin cheesehead hats, proclaimed my state great, and opined on the prospects of the Green Bay Packers:

And Green Bay’s going to have a good team this year, right? They’re going to have a good team. They’re going to have a good team. Most of the audience doesn’t like it, but it’s true. You’re going to have a very good team this year.

Running out the clock! But also showing how comfortable he feels, how much rapport he has with the people, and how much mental and physical strength he has. In the second phase of the speech, it's not so much the content but the sheer demonstration of fortitude. This is done by vigorously occupying the space and the time. He went through many substantive topics, and he talked about things in a colloquial style:

I watched the other day on a show called “Deface the Nation,” has anyone seen it? And they had a congressman who was a Democrat say, Well, whether you like him or not, Iran was broke dealing with Trump....

He knows he's going long. He talks about it — talks about it when, in fact, he was only halfway through the speech:

So I’d better finish strong. Otherwise, we’ll blow it, and we can’t let that happen. No, this was great. All of the great people that spoke and everybody hit a home run. I mean, there’s not one that I can think of where I said, “Oh, gee, that wasn’t great.” Every single person. I refuse to be the only one. Don’t do that to me. They’re already getting ready. See, I gave them an idea.

No, we had a, this was a great convention. This was — I think we’re actually going to go home and miss it. You know usually with a — First of all, look at these crowds. You’d never have this at a convention. Look at these crowds. Love, it’s about love.

Love love love. He won't stop loving until everyone's had their fill. It seems he won't stop talking until everyone has fallen asleep to his lullaby of love love love.

He's feeling free. He's rolling along. He's singing some of his golden oldies. He even says "The late, great Hannibal Lecter" again:

They’re coming from prisons. They’re coming from jails. They’re coming from mental institutions and insane asylums. I, you know the press is always on because I say this. Has anyone seen “The Silence of the Lambs”? The late, great Hannibal Lecter. He’d love to have you for dinner. That’s insane asylums. They’re emptying out their insane asylums. And terrorists at numbers that we’ve never seen before. Bad things are going to happen.

He talks about a word used by Viktor Orban, prime minister of Hungary:

He used a word I wouldn’t use because I can’t use that word. Because you’d say it was braggadocious. The press would say, “He was a braggart.” I am not a braggart.

Yeah, but what's the word? We'll have to look it up for ourselves. The word that wasn't said is lodged in our brain. And he seals it with another word, "braggadocious." And then "braggart." He is not a braggart, but please look up that high praise from Orban, won't you?

I started worrying that this was going on so long that people would say he'd lost touch with reality, but he was interacting with the audience, and we could see and hear these people, and they seemed wrapped up in it. I was wide awake.

I kept waiting to see when he'd see fit to bring it in for a landing. Ah! It was here, when he started talking about bigness — greatness:

For too long, our nation has settled for too little. We settled for too little. We’ve given everything to other nations, to other people. You have been told to lower your expectations and to accept less for your families.

I am here tonight with the opposite message: Your expectations are not big enough. They’re not big enough. It is time to start expecting and demanding the best leadership in the world, leadership that is bold, dynamic, relentless and fearless. We can do that.
We are Americans. Ambition is our heritage. Greatness is our birthright.

He weaves in the unity theme:

But as long as our energies are spent fighting each other, our destiny will remain out of reach. And that’s not acceptable. We must instead take that energy and use it to realize our country’s true potential — and write our own thrilling chapter of the American story. We can do it together. We will unite. We are going to come together and success will bring us together.

It is a story of love, sacrifice and so many other things. And remember the word: Devotion. It’s unmatched devotion. Our American ancestors crossed the Delaware, survived the icy winter at Valley Forge and defeated a mighty empire to establish our cherished republic.

They fought so hard, they lost so many. They pushed thousands and thousands of miles across a dangerous frontier, taming the wilderness to build a life and a magnificent home for their family. They packed their families into covered wagons, trekked across hazardous trails. Scaled towering mountains and braved rivers and rapids to stake their claim on the wide-open, new and very beautiful frontier. When our way of life was threatened, American patriots marched onto the battlefield, raced into enemy strongholds and stared down death — and stared down those enemies — to keep alive the flame of freedom. At Yorktown, Gettysburg, and Midway, they joined the roll call of immortal heroes. So many — just so many heroes, so many great, great people. And we have to cherish those people. We can’t forget those people. We have to cherish those people.

Cherish... love

And building monuments to those great people is a good thing, not a bad thing. They saved our country. No challenge was too much. No hardship was too great. No enemy was too fierce. Together, these patriots soldiered on and endured, and they prevailed. Because they had faith in each other, faith in their country, and above all, they had faith in their God.

Just like our ancestors, we must now come together, rise above past differences. Any disagreements have to be put aside, and go forward united as one people, one nation.... No matter what dangers come our way, no matter what obstacles lie in our path, we will keep striving toward our shared and glorious destiny....Together, we will save this country, we will restore the republic, and we will usher in the rich and wonderful tomorrows that our people so truly deserve.

Rich and wonderful tomorrows....

America’s future will be bigger, better, bolder, brighter, happier, stronger, freer, greater and more united than ever before. And quite simply put, we will very quickly make America great again....

Trump delivered his moving acceptance speech and then gave his rally speech from Saturday that had been so horribly interrupted.

I just watched that clip. Masterful and genuine. He can't lose.

There's a performative element that anyone who learns to act always has. Whether deliberately or by nature, you will always draw on your experience and training when the cameras are on you. Whether due to practice or instinct, President Donald Trump has that gift. He's doing even better than Reagan, particularly when comparing their ages.

This is further confirmation, as if it was needed, that only hardened partisans and complete lunatics claim the speech was a "disaster."

The rally went on way past my bedtime as well but I'd taken a nap earlier so I'd be awake to watch it. I kept thinking I'd go to bed but instead stayed up to the end. It was a great convention with a cross-section of Americans speaking. Both part of Trump's speech was great.

The usual media suspects are freaking out this morning and using the relied upon buzzwords to criticize the speech. I expected nothing different. Most journalists had their articles written before last evening and just had to make a few tweaks before hitting "publish" this morning.

To me, the most endearing aspect of Trump and highlighted during the night was how Trump treats his underlings. He genuinely cares for them.

The speech reminded me of a long fireworks show. You know how the planners will intersperse interlaced volleys with long sequences of single pyrotechnics?

(Note: I am making up terminology to suit myself here - obviously I have no clue what the correct terms are.)

And at various points in the show, when one of these interlaced volleys comes along, everyone starts turning to one another: "This must be the finale!" But then it dies away and another sequence of single shots takes over.

A kind of hypnosis, even boredom, takes over eventually: ho hum, another miraculous bloom of color just lit up the sky. Oh look, another.

And then when it really is the finale, it goes on and on and everyone tumbles to the fact that this is really it and starts paying close attention again, because soon it'll be over and you don't want to miss the really good part.

That was a terrible, horrible speech. Worst one EVER... For the Democrats (and their media lap dogs)!

I could almost feel sorry for the Democrat candidate who will be starting flatfooted, with a lousy administration to defend, an exposed mainstream media with nothing new to say about Trump, and the need to explain why Joe Biden is STILL the President, assuming he doesn't resign the office or die soon.

By going first and delivering the first 30 minutes like that he has made any attacks by the media/democrats appear as an attack on people who want unity and love.

I am not sure how he sees this. After he does it it is obvious.

The democrats have no option that will be successful other than a positive vision.

Which means they are backed into a corner.

This will be a dangerous 4 months.

Appreciate the positive fisking. Who needs MSM analysis?

Trump is by far the most anti-fragile politician I've seen. Everything they throw at him - leaked tapes, indictments, bullets - all make him stronger.

When one sits back and looks at it all, with as much objectivity as one can muster,we're looking at a remarkable personality who by his presence will be talked about for decades to come.

It is one thing to decide to position not only yourself but your supporters as occupying the position of unity and love.

He actually executed a speech that pulled it off.

And the people who attack him as a liar and fake are going to look the worst. Especially the massive contingent that says he staged this and that he killed his own supporter to make it real.

This speech just created millions of unhinged lunatics. They were already losing it.

Nothing makes these people more outraged than making Trump appear human.

I can’t believe the Democrats will let Biden stay in the race after this week. Especially after last night. There is no favorable way to compare the two families. Has Biden ever used his own money in a big way to help those unfortunate? I don’t mean contributing to United Way. The fund for Corey and the two injured accumulated over $6 million. The original goal was one million. I don’t know if Trump contributed anything to that fund. It might have been anonymously or he did it privately. It wouldn’t surprise me if he had offered to pay funeral expenses and hospital bills, etc.
When that fireman’s suit came rolling out I lost it. That death is weighing heavily on him.
This was the first convention I’ve ever watched. Kudos to the organizers. It kept my attention. You could feel the energy and enthusiasm. I wonder what the DNC will do now besides “tear their hair out.”

My mother-in-law hates Trump passionately - a tiny woman who won't even kill a bug said she regretted that the assassination attempt failed. My husband chided her; you could hear her blushing as she said, "I know, that sounds terrible, but this could all have been over!"

I think her hatred of him has to do with J6, but what she knows about either Trump or J6 would rattle around in the bottom of a shotglass with plenty of room for the Jaeger or whatever the kids take shots of these days. My father hates him too, declared his own wish that he could "blow him up" a good month ago, and at least considers himself to be well informed, though I know he gets all his news from the actual TV networks (not even streamed).

The assassination attempt, the convention, the grandchildren, the speech, the lawfare, the gaslighting about Biden's condition going back to 2020, the sudden election law and procedure changes in swing states during that election, the suppression of news that could benefit Trump on not only the networks but on Facebook and Twitter and Insta and so on and so on... None of that moves the needle in the slightest about these old people's hated for Trump. Not even the evidence of their own experiences during his presidency - they view those four years solely through the googly-eyed lens they have taped over their eyes, blaming Trump for every bad thing that happened to them, and their own efforts and the workings of Providence for everything good.

So they're immovable.

I hope some of more flexible mind have been paying attention. And trying to maintain flexibility of mind gets added to my list of "how to get old" things.

One positive: my mother-in-law did say that if Trump weren't the Republican candidate, she would vote Republican this year. Not that it matters; she's in California. But maybe that's a turnout indicator.

Yes. He can lose. Who is COUNTING the vote, Howard? What are their names? Who have they donated to? The same people who counted it last time are going to be counting the vote again this time.

Who will be taping up cardboard over the counting room windows so that we cannot see what they are doing inside? Who will be accepting mail-in ballots without verifying signatures. Who will be letting illegal aliens vote? Who will be stopping the count at 3am waiting for everyone to go to sleep so that when you wake up the next day, suddenly the win the night before has been stunningly reversed.

They are not going to allow Donald Trump to be the President of the United States again because they know they are FINISHED if they do. They've tried to murder him and failed. So it's back to basics. They are going to run the 2020 playbook all over again (and still continue to try to murder Donald Trump.)

He can. He can lose.

All we can talk about is how in the hell that kid got a shot off. I suggest that efforts to make things add up and make sense may be counterproductive, compared to taking action to garner ballots.

Get out your vote. Everything else is just talk.

The legitimized mail-in ballots were STILL not enough to dethrone Trump under much less auspicious circumstances. It's why the oligarchy had to resort to overt theft at 2 AM. It's why they had to try to kill him, only they are now suffering the intolerable consequences of failure.

I can't stress how bad another theft will be. At that point, the happy little conformists will conclude that the Constitution is dead, and go back to the Declaration. The mamaws are going to start handing out some of their nineteen weapons. If invited to another war for the Middle East, people will cheerfully invite the recruiters to sit on a dildo.

When you see Mark Zuckerberg trying to curry favor with Trump, it's because some oligarchs see the writing on the wall.

At this point, how many voters are on the fence? I dare say damn few. So even a within the margin of error lead at this point is impressive.

For example:
Trump 46
Biden 43
Undecided 11

So to give Biden a tie requires the 11 percent undecided to break 7 to 4.

That would require a tremendous enthusiasm gap leaning D. I don't see it.

Standard caveats:
Polling changes. Polls are not 100% accurate. We have months to go. Cheating helps the D's.

I, for one, look forward to the Democratic Party Convention, with Joe Biden standing upright without visible support on adderal/amphetamine/battery power, making mouth noises for at least almost an hour, reading his teleprompters, squinting, missing words and losing his choo-choo of thought every sixty seconds or so, suddenly enraged over a line of text preceded by (USE ANGRY VOICE), and then immediately whispering the next secrets of his speech so you know its just for you, praising his Vice President, who was either Henry Wallace or Andrew Johnson, anyway, you know, the VP guy, the best Black guy since Obama, and reciting his accomplishments such as building the Panama Canal in his first term and presiding over the first Mars colony.

COVID complications might require he drop out of the race, of course, in which case we get to watch and listen as VP Kamala Harris, the presumptive replacement, shows in her nomination acceptance speech why she dropped out of her presidential campaign before her first primary five years ago. Then maybe they'll bring on Gavin Newsom, King of the Homeless, toreplace her and he'll explain his plans for making all of America as great as California's highway underpasses. It'll be awesome!

I streamed all four nights of the RNC from 19:00 CDT to the end, via AP, and I give them full marks for both their production quality and their decision to eschew "hosts" or "common-taters". In the pre-streaming years I listened to conventions [both parties] on the radio, which is fine, since I'm a highly auditory person, and I disliked some of the visual effects, but know that I'm atypical in that respect.

Having voted twice for Bill Clinton -- two separate elections (-; -- it became obvious that he was the last gasp of the old Democrat party, which since then has swung ever farther out of the American orbit. Debates and discussions *used* to be civil, because except for race almost everyone in both parties agreed about broad goals and would debate both means and pace.

These days, Democrats disagree, often militantly so, with the fundamental premise of America, and there is no compromise possible in regard to such foundational principles. Trump is not the cause of division, but rather a symptom. because he is the chosen leader of the immense swath of Americans wishing to protect the foundational principles which have made America the greatest single source of '"good" in human existence.

All that said, what I noticed, with great interest, is how very FEW of even the "warm-up" speakers were weak, bumbling, or confused.

The Republicans have a remarkably deep and eloquent "bench", and the pathologically-geriatric Democrats have shockingly little coming along from below. And even then, what younger presence they have promotes beliefs and positions drastically out of line with most Americans -- to the point of condemning both Jefferson and Jackson.

In biology, such a configuration is called a MORIBUND population, and the extent to which this is so was clearly demonstrated this week.

The voters that are reachable will watch highlights, just like I don't watch the entire sporting event anymore. I watch the highlight package from the the Euro Cup Final and save a bunch of time.

But you have to understand the move.

Trump knows that most people will go to bed at some point during his speech.

People watching will remember that Trump outlasted them. They got tired before Trump.

This just inures him from the *Trump is Old* stuff that is about 2 weeks away when we are talking about some *fresh* *new* Democrat candidate who is *vigorous* and *young.*

People who say that stuff will just look stupid.

This is a good point.

All of the energy in the democrat party is in groups that want Socialism in some form and an end to Israel.

They are cornered.

This is when dangerous animals are most dangerous.

Wasn't planning to watch because normally I can't stand political speeches. But after the assassination attempt, this is history in the making, so I made myself.

Surprisingly I stayed through to the end. I admit I teared up when he kissed the fireman's helmut, imagining how anyone would feel knowing that another person died with a bullet that was meant for them.

Yes, there were times when it dragged, but it was Trump being Trump, except more thoughtful and subdued, which is not surprising given what he went through less than a week ago. It was comforting, because we knew we almost lost him. The thought kept crossing my mind, "how is he not exhausted?"

The haters will hate but who cares. The speech will go down in history just because of the fact that Trump was there to make it.

Mark Halperin just predicted that Trump would be jailed when he is sentenced in September

He won't be sentenced in September, maybe not at all ever. The underlying questions about evidence allowed into trial that the SCOTUS just ruled are off-limits will not be resolved before the election. If denied in NY Trump will appeal to Circuit Court. Merchan will issue another delay. All their plans have crumbled, including their black swan event last Saturday.

Which is probably why the Democrats have gone into full panic mode about Joe.

Who's going to keep pretending at this point?

They all are. None of them has admitted Joe isn't fit to run. They are saying he can't WIN. That's the only issue thus far: can he BEAT Trump? But they are still pretending he's sharp and mentally fit. In public, anyway. I'd welcome any "mainstream" media example that is admitting Joe is unfit because of his senility.

Jailing Trump at this point would be so dumb.

Letting him be killed in prison would be even dumber.

Game this out a bit. I don't think they think it will be that dumb. Killing Trump would have positive effects in 2 ways.
1. you remove the head of the snake. No one else can generate the enthusiasm trump can.
2. It is possible that people will be riled up and act. Probably not a riot, but a large protest. But it will them "become" a riot. The FBI will agitate and stir things up and turn it into an insurrection event to further demonize the people on he right, who, it seems, are always on the verge of mass casualty events but never seem to do it (without help from the FBI).

Note that Jan 6 was an insurrection without guns. It was peaceful until people were spurred on to enter the building (which was still pretty peaceful.)

No, the left NEEDS the right to boil over. It is just around the corner. They think moms protesting school policies and Catholics are secretly planning government overthrows.

When you see Mark Zuckerberg trying to curry favor with Trump, it's because some oligarchs see the writing on the wall.

That's what I read that as too.

I am here tonight with the opposite message: Your expectations are not big enough. They’re not big enough. It is time to start expecting and demanding the best leadership in the world, leadership that is bold, dynamic, relentless and fearless. We can do that.” ’ ”

Exactly this.

Do you remember how one of FDR’s Four Freedoms was “Freedom from want”?

The only way that the Federal government can guarantee freedom from want is to limit what you are allowed to want—only THIS car or THIS house or THIS career or THIS food.

Screw that. Give me freedom TO want.

I appreciate his reminders that we carry a burden as Americans to ensure our nation continues and thrives. That many men and women have given their all through the history of our country in order that it survives and we can not let those losses be in vain on our watch. It’s a powerful theme and rationale for unity. It gives reason to rise above the all the relatively smaller stuff that may divide us.

They can NOT admit this. This is a scandal they can't run from. If they do [admit], they are then forced to try for the 25A and ask(?) the (R)s to go along. VP babbler will then be in the hot set and though she can very likely draw a clock to pass the competency test, she is liked even less than "the big guy" by many more on both sides, not that this would bother the "cabal" that runs Joe's brain. They are likely more fearful of being held to account for having carted the sniffer in chief through these many months of this admin.

Tremendous write up on the speech.

I thought the speech was really transformational. I wished I could just hold onto the feelings of positivity and hope which Trump inspired and not get sucked back into the muck.

Trump mentioned how his father loved to take him to the Billy Graham revival meetings in NY. There’s definitely something of that spirit which Trump wants to bring back to our nation.

Based on how smoothly this convention progressed, especially in comparison to the last two (yes, covid was a factor in 2020) gives me some hope that Trump has identified and purged the enormous number of backstabbing weasels that were embedded in the Republican "leadership."

Yesterday Eric Weinstein posted a rather long tweet the final sentence of which was:

"It's the communism, stupid".

Weinstein's right. A lot of Americans are waking up to just how much the far left aka Marxists are behind or at least involved in most of the chaos and insanity we have endured over the last decade. And if we don't draw a line and stop them then our flawed but excellent social and political order will give way to misery and death.

What brought this to mind was the comment by Achilles:

All of the energy in the Democrat party is in groups that want Socialism in some form and an end to Israel.

any one else notice ?

AceofSpades observes ...
I noticed in his speech, he gets annoyed having to read other people's written lines, so after every line he reads from the teleprompter, he then offers asides and digressions to add his personal flava to it.

Like he read: "From Yorktown, to Antietam, to Midway, brave Americans have joined the roll call of immortal heroes."

And that's obviously not Trump's way of speaking.

Then he turns to the audience and freestyles it: "These heroes, these heroes. So many heroes, so many. We need to cherish them. We need to cherish these heroes. Did you ever notice that? No one says 'cherish these heroes' any longer, no one says that. We need to build statues. Beautiful statues. I love the flag."

Then he goes back to the script for a line.

That's why it was so long -- the script itself was about 45 minutes long, and then his asides were just as long.

Jamie--your MIL saying "I know it sounds terrible, but this would all be over."

This is what they--the Dems and the Media--have done. They have made Trump into Emmanuel Goldstein. The source of all chaos and evil, when all the people want is peace and tranquility.

Trump hasn't done anything to anyone, and has had no power to do anything to anyone, since January of 2021. Yet, people like your MIL want him...stopped. To make it all go away. All the problems that the TV screen keeps telling them about.

Obviously, if Trump is assassinated, or jailed, or has another election stolen by election fraud, "this" is far from over. But that is what they have been conditioned to believe.

Sad.

I thought it was a very good speech overall. The only real downside for me was the various "chicken in every pot" comments. Dammit, I'm still waiting the chicken I was promised 50 years ago.

Again, if you haven't seen Kai Trump's speech at the convention do so. Not polished but brilliant.

@John Henry
I may have been wrong about the best grandkids comment, but I'm still claiming a close second.

Walter Kirn gave me this idea.

The Trump speech was mental therapy, specifically bringing closure to the assassination attempt. The first 30 minutes (which he said were too painful ever to repeat) let him state definitively what happened and that he survived. He no longer has to repeat on an endless loop alternative and more deadly endings. Then he dealt with survivor guilt by addressing Corey Comperatore directly and embracing the fireman's uniform. Then he gave the rally speech that he was unable to complete on Saturday, leaving nothing unresolved. All of it was acted out in front of a huge live and television audience.
