"She's talking about J.D. Vance, someone who enlisted in the Marine Corps after... 9/11... putting his own life on the line in service to our country...."

Tulsi Gabbard was responding to this short video put out by Kamala Harris: "Donald Trump has picked his new running mate: J.D. Vance. Trump looked for someone he knew would be a rubber stamp for his extreme agenda. Make no mistake: J.D. Vance will be loyal only to Trump, not to our country."

Tulsi is kinda the rock to Kamala's scissors. Though given how fake she comes off I think Kamala is more like paper so perhaps that makes Tulsi scissors? I wonder about the origin of this video?? Was this completely out of no where and Tulsi saw Kamala's attack on J.D. and felt prompted to respond? I'm guessing it is more likely she is actively working with the Trump campaign and someone from the campaign asked her to respond. If that is the case it shows a few things. The Trump campaign is much much better organized than it was previously. You don't want J.D. to respond to an attack like that, and as mentioned above I think Tulsi is the perfect one to respond to an attack by Kamala. Also, this suggests that Tulsi is hoping for a spot in a Trump administration. I wonder what she is hoping for? She has a military background, but I'm not certain she has the executive experience or ability to handle Sec-Def. Unlike other cabinet positions the Military is so large and Byzantine I feel it really demands someone with exceptional executive ability. I think I would trust her directionally with the military just not necessarily her ability to get things done and to monitor all that is going on. And after the Justice Department and FBI, the military is the top organization in government that needs to be cleaned up.

Vance enlisted on his own and was assigned his job. He served four years as a correspondent, six months of which were in Iraq at the height of the war. He did not serve for only six months.

There is no similarity, other than basic job description, between JD Vance and the "Fortunate Son" about whom Creedence wrote a song with the line targeted right at Al Gore Jr., "I ain't no Senator's son, no." Anyone who enlisted after 9/11 should be held in honor, even if you don't hold their service in high esteem. None of us knew in the Fall of 2001 what a clusterfuck that war would be and we are fortunate for young people like JD who volunteered to fight for their country.

My guess is she has personal animus toward Kamala, as demonstrated in the defenestration she applied during the primary four years ago, when Tulsi was still a Democrat. Tulsi went at Kammy hard enough to force Kammy out of the race with less than 1% of ballots for her at that point.

Inga - he said what he said:

which is this:

“If you listen to Rachel Maddow every night, the basic worldview that you have is that MAGA grandmas who have family dinners on Sunday and bake apple pies for their family are about to start a violent insurrection against this country,” Vance said. “But if you listen to Alex Jones every day, you would believe that a transnational financial elite controls things in our country, that they hate our society, and oh, by the way, a lot of them are probably sex perverts too.”

Vance went on, “Sorry, ladies and gentlemen, that’s actually a hell of a lot more true than Rachel Maddow’s view of society.”

He said that every person in attendance for his speech believed “something that’s a little crazy.” In his case, he said, “I believe the devil is real and that he works terrible things in our society. That’s a crazy conspiracy theory to a lot of very well-educated people in this country right now.”

Wow - you ProPublica-Maddow folks got him now!

He isn't saying it IS True, just truer than anything Rachel Maddow says. Which is a low bar.
AND SO WHAT? There are sex perverts on the left. A transnational financial elite controls things?
Like Soros? yeah - maybe so! but the left don't agree. Happy to take Soros money - but shhhhh mums the word.

So Inga this is all a nothing burger - puffed up by liars at leftwing INVESTIGATIONS! pRO-pUBLICA.

Al Gore Jr, IIRC, never sought a commission and did his turn as an enlisted man, and FWIW the only veteran in CCR was John Fogarty, who did a few years stateside NTTAWWT.

IANAV but my understanding is that the DD-214 is essentially your 'permanent record' issued at time of separation--like a resume' of your service including special training and qualifications, deployments, awards and decorations, etc.

The MOS is just an alphanumeric code for particular specialties, whether cook or sniper.

Corporal J.D. Vance served in the Marine Corps as a Combat Correspondent from 2003 to 2007. He attained E4 (Corporal) rank while serving a four-year enlistment, including a six-month deployment to Iraq in late 2005 as a non-combatant. So risking his life likely involved dodging IEDs on the road

-----------
gadfly, I served for 6 years US Army. Outside of training schools,I was always stationed in Germany. After MP school, I was assigned to duty at US Army Europe Headquarters. My job was to protect the CINCUSAREUR - the 4-star general in charge of all US Army forces in Europe. Sounds pretty sweet, eh?

My first day on the job came suddenly; just as I arrived at my duty station, a huge bomb went off, killing 3 from my barracks and destroying a vital communications center. Without any buffer time to adjust or even a basic orientation, I was packed up with full combat gear, a .45 and an M-16 and spent the next 14 hours guarding the bombsite and communication center. When I arrived on scene, there was a lower torso with legs still attached hanging in the branches of a tree... the rest of the torso had left a 40ft skidmark on a parking lot and sat there for hours as CID performed their forensic tasks. Another body had been atomized and was just a mist that had been sprayed on the side of a building. It was like a grotesque Jackson Pollock work. That wasn't a combat zone until it was.
When you put on a uniform, you become a target. I denigrate no one's honorable service.

P.S. It was the work of the Baader-Meinhof gang, btw. My unit then was the 529th MP Company.
Army awarded us as the best MP unit in the entire Army while I was there. Deuce Nine!

Inga makes a good point about her daughter. What she doesn't tell us is what her MOS was. Like Vance's assignment (MOS) that's really not that important. My experience is that regardless of MOS ( I was artillery -0802 MOS) once you are in a combat zone you become a target for the other guys. Given the current range of artillery and the deployment of armed drones I think it is probably true that there are even fewer places to hide on or near the battlefield than ever. Remember that there have been plenty of times when clerk/typists ( real echelon pogues) have been required to man the lines and there have been plenty of times in "safe" rear areas where an artillery round has landed in somebody's back pocket. Vance volunteered. The Green Machine could
as easily made him a grunt (03) as a correspondent. Luck of the draw.

I looked into that accusation that JD Vance thinks Alex Jones is a truth teller. I listened to Vance's speech at a private group and he stated very clearly that he thought a lot of what Jones says is nuts but some people can be 60% nuts, iow most of the time, and 40% of the time very insightful. It's worth listening to that 40%. Vance was saying we shouldn't reject people entirely because they have been labeled as nuts but the majority opinion. Vance goes on to say that he has some beliefs which some people might consider "crazy." For instance, he believes the devil is a real force in society, and of course lots of people would consider that crazy.

The argument Inga made about Harris and the VP position requiring bravery would of course also apply to Vance since he is volunteering to put himself in the same position. I don't know how Inga doesn't see that.

Maybe Inga didn't make that argument about the relative dangers of being in the military and serving as VP. If not, sorry Inga.
This thread is a bit wacky and I don't want to trace it back.

Tulsi can get a bit macho. She wasn't really making a rational argument, it was more an emotional response to a very stupid statement by our VP Harris. There is something strange about Harris because I've seen her speak rationally and she's actually held important jobs, but most of the time she's totally "effed" up. Who knows? Maybe she's on cocaine? I had a supervisor once who was unqualified for her job and she was on cocaine and eventually had a mental breakdown. That's who our VP reminds me of...LOL

I've really been noticing how men in politics can be juvenile and dickish and it's hard for a woman to even function in that environment.

Kamala Harris always reminds me of the perfume ladies at Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus, dolled-up and dressed in that overly-feminine palette of pastel colors, coy insincere small pasted on her painted face, ready to spritz you with some strong perfume.

She has ZERO gravitas. In four years of public speaking to a national audience, she still hasn't learned how to comport herself in a dignified manner appropriate to her title. Her video here, slandering Vance, is one example. Worth watching her speech at the annual convention of her black women's sorority this year. The women sitting on the dais behind look unimpressed, frankly hostile, as Kamala babbles on.

A person would need to be hard-core do-or-die democrat to think Kamala is viable presidential material. She make Julia Dreyfuss' VP character seem like Winston Churchill in comparison.

To be sure, he was an enlisted combat correspondent for a MC air unit for six months, and not involved in combat (kind of like Al Gore Jr.)

Dig deeper, my friend. First of all, Gore was "in the army/vietnam" for the sole puurpose of political resume enhancement. He was in-country less than half the length of a normal tour of duty. His occupational specialty was irrelevant as he probably did no work of any kind.

Some public affairs people make coffee, some write press releases, some assist news media and some imbed with combat operators in the same manner as war correspondents. Injury and death is not unknown.

For instance: You might be familiar with the name Dale Dye (he was the military technical advisor for Band of Brothers, The Pacific, Masters of the Air and Platoon.

Dale is a retired USMC Captain. He spent his first 13 years in the Corps as an enlisted man, mainly in public affairs. During multiple tours in Vietnam, Dale was awarded the Bronze Star (V) and three Purple Hearts (not "John Kerry Purple Hearts"). He is also "mentioned in dispatches" (described while under fire in Hue, by Phil Caputo in "A Rumor of War").

Not saying Vance's experience was anything like Dale Dye's but it sure as hell was nothing like Al Gore's. Marines, regardless of occupational specialty, are first and foremost, Marines.

the unarmed part is a historic approach, but only useful if the other side honors the concept. I know for a fact that SF Medics went armed in Nam, and I know that Army nurses went armed in A-Stan.

wiki:
Combat medics of the United States military may put themselves at greater risk than many other roles on the battlefield. In recent conflicts, the enemies faced by a professional army (often insurgents) may not have respect for the laws of war and may actively target combat medics for the significant value they have in keeping the unit combat-effective. Since the non-combatant status granted to medics may not always be respected, modern combat medics carry weapons for personal defense and in most Western armies are virtually indistinguishable from regular infantrymen.

Narr said...

I knew the broad outlines of Dale Dye's career, NKP, but had no idea he was in Public Affairs. And I would expect someone who served multiple tours in VN to accumulate some impressive awards and decorations.

Be that as it may, I get a strong whiff of Republican PA guy on a short-term fool's errand good, Democrat PA guy on a short-term fool's errand bad.

Just so you know, I'm not calling Dye, Gore, or Vance fools--only the politicians and generals who got them into those messes.
