"Only the National Rally appears in a position to secure enough seats for an absolute majority. If it does, Mr. Macron will have no other choice..."
"... than to appoint [28-year-old Jordan] Bardella prime minister. He would then form a cabinet and control domestic policy.
Presidents have traditionally retained control over foreign policy and defense matters in such scenarios, but the Constitution does not always offer clear guidelines.
That would put an anti-immigrant, Euroskeptic far-right party governing a country that has been at the heart of the European project. Mr. Bardella could clash with Mr. Macron over issues like France’s contribution to the European Union budget or support for Ukraine in its war with Russia.... If the National Rally fails to secure an absolute majority — Mr. Bardella has said he would not govern without one — Mr. Macron could be facing an unmanageable lower house, with two big blocs on the right and left opposed to him. His much-reduced centrist coalition, squeezed between the extremes, would be reduced to relative powerlessness...."

And now, mes amis, pour la France!
So the French press wasn't really telling the truth about how much support Macron's policies actually had. Imagine how bad the results would have been had he waited another month to call elections.
"... made inroads into all segments of the population." Can the j-school grads finally drop the talking points? It's a mainstream party now.
They just aren’t bashful about their world government plan anymore, are they? I will not accept their invitation to be outraged that their plan is being foiled by voters….
The far-right is gauche.
The massive protests by yellow jackets and farmers. Immigration takes jobs from French citizens. Muslim immigrant impose their values which is sharia law. That creates violence and crime. Energy and green laws have hurt many citizens. The refusal of Macron to understand is what lead voters for Le Pen
His much-reduced centrist coalition, squeezed between the extremes, would be reduced to relative powerlessness
Oh, snap!
Don't worry. Antifa is there to burn it all down, just like they will when Trump wins in November. Board up all the windows!! It's coming.
They continue to use far-right as an epithet thus weakening what it really means. The immigration France has been seeing in the past decade has done more to destroy what we know of Europe than anything proposed by the National Rally.
Any group not to the left of Marx is now right wing.
Does the MSM ever say "far left"?

Perhaps, this time, there will be consequences for those who like to burn stuff down.
This country needs a good penal colony. Wake Island and Shemya come to mind.
No worries. Surely the stupid party (conservatives everywhere) will manage to muck things up and give the win to the communists+fascist coalition aka progressives.
Did they add one takeaway?
("oh, and another thing that's bad about this...")
the European project
hadn't heard this term before.. I guess i'm cloistered.
But.. What is The Job of the Prime Minister of France? France? or, the European project?
The left is sinister
I'm certain this is just thrilling news to someone who cares.

a country that has been at the heart of the European project
If by this you mean making sure the EU served French interests to the exclusion of everybody else, then yeah. Why do you think the Brits first (wisely) declined to join, and then exited?
So was napoleon and hitler
The only issue here is Muslim immigration and its side effects.
National Rally is only "far-right" from the far-left-over-the-edge-and-plummeting-toward-the-rocks-below perspective.
NYT's habitual use of the qualifying phrase far-right informs the intelligent observer much more about the quality of journalism practiced by the New York Times than any person, organization, publication, or opinion NYT characterizes as far-right.
Gauche and Being Left-Handed
Although it doesn’t mean anything sinister, gauche is one of several words (including sinister) with ties to old suspicions and negative associations relating to the left side and use of the left hand. In French, gauche literally means “left,” and it has the extended meanings “awkward” and “clumsy.”
That pendulum we all often see or talk about is swinging again. Moving right- all over the world.
It's needed. Everything has gone off the left rail.
"Far right" - a pejorative term used by globalists and their thug enforcers to describe normal, common-sense based people who are sick of the destruction of their society by the left and by Muslim immigrants who are not grateful in the least but rather are bent on imposing their hideous Shariah on everyone.
I'm also struck by the descriptor "Far Right"
If common sense is a far-right platform, then I guess I'm there with the other deplorables.
The Olympics might be interesting.
Prelude:
Oli London tweets:
"Tens of thousands of left-wing rioters take to the streets of France causing chaos.
Stores are being looted as activists set fire to the streets, launching fireworks, tear gas and smoke grenades after the results of the French election."
Wednesday, I watched the riot, I seen cops out on the street
Watched 'em throwin' rocks and stuff and chokin' in the heat
Listened to reports about the whisky passin' 'round
Seen the smoke and fire and the market burnin' down
Watched while everybody on his street would take a turn
To stomp n' smash n' bash n' crash n' slash n' bust n' burn
Baron Haussmann remodelled Paris with all those grand boulevards to facilitate control of the Parisian mob. It would be possible to give the canaille a whiff of grape.

Except for the UK where feckless “conservatives” showed a complete inability to run the government and were rejected, or more precisely ejected, from office. Labor has filled the vacuum, but perhaps the UK is ahead of us in doing what is necessary to remind the party elites to do their job or get out of the way.
wishfulthinking: "No worries. Surely the stupid party (conservatives everywhere) will manage to muck things up and give the win to the communists+fascist coalition aka progressives."
Deals are being cut between Macron and the even further left parties to have, in voting districts where the Le Pen party candidate ended in first place in the first round, 3rd place finishers drop out so the second place finisher behind the Le Pen first round winner can overtake.
His much-reduced centrist coalition, squeezed between the extremes, would be reduced to relative powerlessness...."
From "Four Takeaways From France’s Snap Election/It was a big day for the far-right National Rally. Just how big will not be clear until a second round of voting is over" (NYT).
If you read the article without any knowledge of the situation it just seems like the French people are going crazy. They are no longer supporting Macron's Centrism and supporting these far right nut balls.
But if you know what is going on it makes more sense.
Centrist Party Stands for:
War in Africa.
War in Ukraine.
French Subordination to Globlism/European Union
Unlimited immgration
Massive immigrant crime
Punishing people who make immigrants mad
Far Right party stands for:
Last 50 years of French culture
Supporting the French working class
Limited immigration of non-integrated muslim populations.
And the "Far-Right" National Rally is actually borderline socialist as far as social spending and support for high taxes and redistribution of wealth to working class people.

They just figured out what the point of the "Conservative" party was. The Tories were just globalist shills meant to lie to the voters who wanted certain things.
The Tories did exactly the same thing the Republican Party did in the US. Exactly the same pattern. Exactly the same betrayal.
Farage is just taking a different path than Trump did because of the electoral system.
Macron will make common cause with all of the non-NR parties for the run-off elections. I predict NR comes up short next weekend. NR needs lots of three-way races to win a majority in the Assembly and I predict all of the opposition parties will work together to make all of the races two-way.
+1000 to Achilles at 9:45.

Exactly.
Muslim immigration is Far Left.
The NYT is far left.
Macron is Far Out
Macron now will follow the strategy Spain's current PM employed and sell out to France's far left in an effort to secure a majority. May God save France.
444 candidates of the RN have reached the second round on Sunday; I believe this is a record high for them. 289 vote are a majority in the Assemblée nationale.
Nigel Farage's new party seems to be picking up steam and I think this can only help. He thinks he will have the votes to be PM by 26 or 27.
The British PM is appointed by the King. I wonder if King Chuck would be able to clench his teeth tightly enough to appoint Farage if he has the votes? Or would he quietly send word through back channels "Naaaaah. I don't think so. Send someone else"
It is supposed to be a rubber stamp, the king is not supposed to have any discretion in who he appoints. But he does hold the rubber stamp and can refuse to exercise it.
On top of that, the position of PM has no official legal basis in Great Britain. It was a made up position a couple centuries ago. Could Chuck just say, "I don't think I will appoint a PM. Let's just muddle along without one and see how it goes"
I've been fan of Farage for 15 years or so. He is kind of like a Donald Trump with less shyness and more willingness to speak his mind.
