"Behind the scenes, Obama has been deeply engaged in conversations about the future of Biden’s campaign, taking calls from many anxious Democrats..."

"... including former House speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), and has shared his views about the president’s challenges, according to people with knowledge of the calls, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss private conversations....  Pelosi has taken an even more active role behind the scenes, resisting efforts by Biden to end the debate about his continued candidacy, according to people familiar with her efforts...  Obama, perhaps the party’s most revered figure, has tried to keep a lower profile.... [S]ome of Biden’s aides have fumed about Obama’s role in these conversations, blaming him for not keeping the party united behind Biden’s candidacy...."

From "Obama tells allies Biden’s path to winning reelection has greatly diminished/The former president, hugely influential in the party, has told associates that Biden’s path to victory has significantly shrunk" (WaPo).

We're told "Biden aides say Obama could have stopped Academy Award-winning actor George Clooney, a close friend of the former president, from writing an op-ed in the New York Times that called on Biden to drop out of the presidential race...." Yes, he could have, and he didn't. It's sort of as if Obama had written the op-ed. Poor Obama! So "revered" he must "keep a low profile." It's almost as if we can't know what he thinks. And yet we do know, don't we?

By the way, what's up with the "perhaps" — "Obama, perhaps the party’s most revered figure"? Who else is in the running?

Today's Democrat party and this Presidency are a sad mix of self-righteousness, personal ego, party politics, backstabbing, and human frailty, harbored safely in a whole lot of media gaslighting. One hopes for true compassion, as is their franchise claim. Times like this show the wolves inside the sheep's clothing.

I hope Biden is not listening to Obama. Or anyone else who wants him to drop out. Biden needs to stay the course.

Get through these next two weeks and he'll be the nominee. And they'll all come back to "Team Biden". Obama wasn't really in Biden's corner in 2020. He's not the most faithful of friends.

Joe apparently can't even win a 'war' against his own party leaders. How would he hope to succeed against Putin, Xi and the lot? It feels a lot like Biden was never actually able to ascend to the top of the party himself but was allowed to serve by others. Now that permission is being withdrawn, he seems unable to counter it.

If Biden goes then the candidate figures to be Harris — if she wants it. She might not. The advantage of Harris as candidate is that the Democrats can spend the next four years bitching about racism and sexism instead of understanding why their policies are so unpopular.

I suspect that a shocking number of people under 50 only know JFK as "that guy who got shot," if that. Reverence is for pop stars, like Taylor Swift. Heck, even she is starting to get a little long in the tooth for today's world.

To the larger question of who else might be revered, there really aren't any other real options, are there? Bill Clinton might get some reverence from those old enough to remember him directly as President, but his relative moderation by today's standards has no place in the current Democratic Party. RBG used to qualify, but she didn't resign, so screw her, say today's Dems.

Say what you will about Obama's policies, but arguably the most significant criticism to be made about him as a party leader is that his cult of personality effectively destroyed the pipeline of younger Democrats who could potentially appeal to a broad base of the public as credible leaders. Come to think of it, in true cult of personality style, the only other person likely to be revered by today's Democratic Party is Michelle Obama, which explains why so many on the Left have masturbatory fantasies about her running for President.

I suspect Obama may feel he needs to maintain a position of plausible deniability. If, for example, he was to unequivocally and publicly advise Biden to step aside, and Biden did, and then Kamala Harris took over and lost anyway, then Obama’s aura of omniscience would be seriously dented.

Obama became a Democratic icon because of his 50% African immigrant DNA. As half white and generally "privileged," he never had much to do with poor urban US blacks following from slavery.

Instead, Obama reflects the last time Democrats were truly united by symbolism ("A black man CAN be President"), as the tensions between Bernie and Hillary were strong. The pre-2016 unity ship has sailed, with race and gender and defunded police and dying downtowns and pedophiles and white bashing and COVID and immigration and offshoring and environment and working class vs. elite priorities driving wedge after wedge into Obama-era Party unity.

Biden's term was a Pyrrhic victory over Trump, with the Party turning the reins over to bullies, militants, utopians, and the mentally ill -- served up with a nice thick slab of inflation. Referencing Obama now is akin to dragging an old rock star or movie star out of retirement: his fans will be happy for a moment but many will remember all the changes that followed.

The Democrats made a Faustian bargain in 2020. They were scared that the Democrat primary voters were going to select Bernie Sanders as the Democrat Presidential candidate. They didn't believe that the general electorate would swallow a full dose of Bernie in November. Too far left. Well there's this loyal Party hack Joe Biden. There were doubts then about Joe's mental ability--dumbest man in the Senate before he was VP--fantastic ability to eff things up. But "we can run him as normal"--and we'll keep him in the basement due to Covid.

Well that worked--but it was a bait and switch. "Normal Joe" governed like Bernie Sanders--or at least the posse around Normal Joe that was actually running things governed like Bernie Sanders. And as long as they--and the press--had the image of Good Old Normal Joe out there, they had a good shot to win again in 2024--with Joe.

And a lot of people believed that Joe was okay. If you commented about his mental failings (obvious to some, but not to the Democrats) you were relying on "cheap fakes".

Well the wheels fell off that wagon with the debate, and Joe isn't helping any with his subsequent fumbles stumbles and generally unhinged rants. That faithful Democrat party hack who got along by going along with anything the Party directed him to do has now been revealed as eating a lot of loco weed. That donkey just won't go anymore at the direction of the Party elders. We'll see if the Party can come up with a suitable bribe to get him to depart. Joe likes bribes. Dr. Jill likes them even more.

I'll take a contrary track.

If Obama had the clout necessary to get Biden to quit, he wouldn't need public proclamations and the deed would have been done long before this to put his gal Harris in the driver's seat.

He's leading from behind. Again. Trying to get somebody else to do the dirty work of kneecapping Biden.

I wish I could remember the commenter who keeps bringing up the fact that Biden probably hates Obama's guts for not backing him in 2016 because by Biden's reading of the elections of '16 and '20 he would gave beat Trump and be finishing his second term now. He's not going to listen to Obama, and doesn't want to make it look like Obama can tell him what to do.

The amount of rejection and humiliation that Biden has had to accept over the last few weeks has to be absolutely soul crushing. Absolute repudiation and the certain knowledge that history books will put you right next to people like Nero and Chamberlain. If he is lucky. It could well be Benedict Arnold and Judas.

I don't think so. After all, there's certainly a cult of personality around Trump - we are assured all the time that everyone who will vote for him worships him.* Yet - have you taken a gander at our bench?

* Naturally I know that many, many people who will vote for Trump will not do so because of his personality. I'm one. But I do think some people will, maybe even a lot. I think that's probably true of most presidential elections.

I think Obama's great failure was the failure of a person who has few real accomplishments (or maybe has a sneaking suspicion that they aren't really his accomplishments) but is elevated for whatever reason: a raging case of imposter syndrome. Since coming onto the national stage, like Patrick McManus he has been perfecting his two looks - thoughtful and bemused. You deploy those, preferably while smoking a pipe, and then you just wait for the people around you to solve the problem themselves, since you're obviously bemused by their incompetence and giving thought to firing them.

I have recreated the quote in paraphrase. I think it's from Never Sniff A Gift Fish.

Perhaps we should learn a few lessons from 2016; one of them is polls are BS, just ask Sec. Clinton. And two, maybe, just maybe, Joe Biden is more in touch with actual Americans than Obama-Pelosi-Schumer?”

If this sounds suspiciously like what I keep posting here it’s because this has been the consistent back-channel message from Team Biden since the debate. I told you he’s dug in. Dug in like a tick with a yuge chip on its shoulder.

It is a standard effect that if you have an expectation of success and it is not met, that your depression takes you lower than if you never had that expectation of success.

Obama voters thought many things.

Some thought they would get socialized health care. They got Romneycare.

Some thought they would get Bush/Cheney war crime trials. They found out Bush and Obama were both warmongers.

I think a big part of the problem for Obama is he kept his police state shenanigans on the down low.

But the biggest disappointment for democrats with respect to Obama is Obama's state centered policies obviously sucked especially compared to Trump's success.

We are entering the leaving the 4th and entering the 5th stage of grief right now.

About 50% of democrats are having very nasty and very public mental breakdowns right now. There are a solid number who concurrently hold "trump staged the assassination but we are mad the shooter missed and fuck the Trump supporters that died" positions.

Most of this is a result of being obviously wrong. This is very similar to a business failing and the founders turning on each other.
