I have an aversion to the "making history" argument. And I don't like the idea of whether voters are "ready" for it. It's a visualization of a timeline of progress, in 2 ways. The first way makes perfect sense: The first female President of the United States has a place in history as the first female President of the United States. But the second way is an insidious attack on people: the idea that we voters as a group are in a process of enlightenment, some of us are further ahead than others, and one is most advanced when one is influenced by the argument that we ought to vote for someone because she will be the first.
I do appreciate the "sometimes" in "I sometimes shied away from talking about making history." As I remember it, she and her champions sounded the history-making theme continually.
And now, we've got a new candidate who can use the history-making theme. I'm still irked when I'm elbowed to come on, everybody, let's make history. I may on my own feel myself warming up to a candidate because of some personal attribute that has only a dubious connection to the ability to do the job well, but it's negatively related to this talking about making history.

It's true that we haven't yet elected a woman to the presidency. But I can't imagine that Clinton believes - and the pull quote certainly suggests that she doesn't believe - that it was her sex that defeated her.

The 1st is a big deal--the 1st makes history. The 2nd is when it starts to become normal; the real notable moment is when it stops being notable.
This excerpt, as you point out, is just more Hillary lies. She never stopped talking about making history as the 1st woman. And the "voters aren't ready for it" is crap too. We all know far more people voted for Hillary because she's a woman than voted against her because she's a woman. She benefitted from being a woman.

I would think another woman doing what she didn't do, especially a woman Like Kamala Harris --someone that Clinton would never think is more qualified and deserving than Hillary herself was-- will cause a whole lot more pain.
There are plenty of other countries that have elected a woman to be President, Prime Minister, whatever the head job is, so it seems kind of arrogant for us to act as if it's going to be some huge, historic event when it finally happens here. Typical Americans, it's always about us.

I'm still pleased that the balance of SCOTUS changed because RBG wanted her successor to be named by Hillary, the first female POTUS.

It is the standard DEI argument.
We keep playing this game about "firsts." One of the reasons that discrimination was so insidious is that highly qualified candidates, sometimes the best candidate, for a position were blocked for no other reason that they were in the wrong demographic. The game was rigged. The solution was to stop the discrimination so everyone could be considered for those positions and compete fairly. The fact that someone was the first woman in a certain position was notable, but it was not important. The person deserved the position. Feel free to celebrate it, but the appointment was purely based on merit.
DEI is about manufactured firsts. If there has not been a woman in such-and-such position, then a woman must be given the position. Any woman will do. Often the person selected is completely unqualified and incompetent - grifters know how to grift - but that does not matter because the entire point was "representation" and merit not being considered at all. This has gotten to absurd situations with things like the first lesbian, black, immigrant woman as Press Secretary, who was obviously in this position because she checks boxes. She's utterly incompetent, laughably incompetent even. We even get declarations of firsts that are not actually firsts, just so they can claim (falsely) that it was a first.
Hillary Clinton, for all her faults and there are many, is a good politician. She is a cruel person who should never have been in any position of power for the simple reason she is a villain, but there have been male villains who reached high offices by being good politicians, so there is precedent. Kamala Harris is incompetent. She is a bad politician and always has been. If not for Willie Brown, her ceiling would probably be Mayor of Oakland or California State Senator at best, and most likely would have ended up as an unremarkable career ADA or the trophy wife of someone with money.
The only good thing about a Kamala victory is that it would give men a boost because she's a flyweight. Her female supporters won't notice because ABORTION.

My biggest fear is not that Kamala will actually win, but that the "historic first black/southeast Asian woman" schtick will provide cover for the big cheat. No one would have believed record turnout for Biden, this opens the door to claim that women came out in droves, Harris reversed the growing trend of minorities moving towards Trump, etc.
In other words, Kamala comes with a lot of baggage, but those bags may well be full of already-filled-out ballots.
