Rusty: Thanks for the youtube suggestions. I watched machine thinking on the origin of precision and heavy presses and lathes. Really interesting stuff. I used to be an avid reader of rec.crafts.metalworking on usenet, so I was already well acquainted with the notion of surface plates and gauge blocks, but hadn't ever really properly considered them. You are or were a machinist I seem to recall, is that right?

I've never lived in the Midwest, so I often wonder how the day turned out when you post a dramatic sky, like today. Since you post them towards the end of the day, maybe include how the day turns out.

I had a pretty good morning myself. Inside of about 15 minutes of arriving at my workplace, I saw a nice sunrise with lots of dramatic clouds, a red-shouldered hawk, a Muscovy duck, two black-bellied whistling ducks, a white ibis, a cardinal and a blue jay, as well as a myriad of doves and blackbirds. I try to get there a half-hour early so I can enjoy some nature before going inside for eight hours.

Hunter Biden's ex-girlfriend Zoe Kestan testified in his gun trial. Here's a National Review article, but let me pull out an interesting quote:

Prosector Leo Wise conducted a lengthy direct examination of Kestan accompanied by pictures from her cellphone to corroborate her recollection of events.

Wise and Kestan seemed to get into a rhythm throughout the direct examination, as Kestan recalled large events and small details from her time with Hunter Biden. Kestan remembered exact dates and named the various hotels they stayed at during their time together.

Each time Kestan described an experience with Hunter Biden, Wise asked her if Hunter Biden smoked crack at their hotel or Airbnb, and Kestan always replied affirmatively.

“Every 20 minutes or so,” Kestan said of Hunter Biden’s crack habit during one of the hotel stays. She noted that he smoked crack less frequently in public, and she never noticed a change in his demeanor when he smoked.

Exact dates? Places they were together! Corroborating photos! Wow, it would sure be nice to get these details in trials vs something happened a few decades before, not sure what month or season. Still, you can bet the fix is in for Hunter to be acquitted.

i actually would be interested in hearing rcocean's response to this:

“Okay so here’s the problem”

...Ready

“On one side are 4 Israelis”

...Okay

“On the other are at least 94 Palestinians”

...Throw the switch

“But it’s 94 people for 4”

...Throw the switch

“So you’d kill 90 more people to rescue 4?”

...Buddy, I’d kill 100 to save 1. The Palestinians tied the Israelis to the tracks.
...They also had multiple chances to get off the tracks themselves. They didn’t.

“That’s brutal!”

...How? Why should 4 die who could do nothing to stop it in the place of 94 who could have
... stopped it at any time? It’s not really a trolley problem.

California Woman Killed by Black Bear in State's First Documented Fatal Attack

Patrice Miller, 71, was found dead in her Downieville home last November, but a recently released autopsy report by California’s Department of Fish and Wildlife has verified she was killed by a bear, the Sierra County Sheriff’s department said.

A sheriff’s deputy discovered Miller deceased in her home while conducting a welfare check after a grocery store employee reported that she had not been seen or heard from for several days, according to Sheriff Michael Fisher.

The sheriff’s office said when they found Miller, there were clear signs a bear had been inside the house. But officials believed Miller had died of natural causes and the bear broke into the house after her death and had been feeding on her remains.

However, a recently released autopsy revealed that Miller did not die of natural causes but had in fact been killed by the bear, the sheriff said.

“Post investigation, we found out that she had been having some bear issues at the house. And after we concluded our coroner’s investigation and removed her remains from the house, the bear continued to break into the house over and over again over the next several days,” Fisher added.
The bear was eventually trapped and euthanized, the sheriff said.

I had a, I don't know, not an epiphany, I hope. I'll phrase it in the form of a question. Am I a shitposter? See Merchan Juror's cousin post.

My cousin, from the Scorsese "After Hours" post, is/was, very real. I say was because he died sometime in the late 90's from a most unfortunate paragliding accident.

Whereas the Merchan juror's cousin, aka shitposter, seems like a convenient escape hatch for the judge, who must be coming to the rude realization that his handling of the case has been a gift to his nemesis, Donald Trump. (to paraphrase the comment that could be construed as a shitpost)

Never the less, it seems like I wen't from The Rule of Lemity @6:46, to shitposter in a matter of days. Socials is a hard mistress.

Not sure if anyone has brought up the 'Ripley" series on Netflix. Just finished it and highly recommend it for those who enjoy the "film noir" genre.

Settings and cinematography are stunning. Acting, dialog, and directing are spare. And the parallels and interplay between the characters, settings, and plot with the art of Caravaggio are brilliant.

Really a work of cinematic art.

The criticism has been kind of harsh for this one.

The two biggest problems called out; the main actor is too old...by a lot.

And he is a sourpuss. The whole point is he is supposed to be charming and he's not.

He was great in the Sherlock reboot though...

Who says this film or its lead actor are "supposed to be" anything? You mean like the novel or the pretty mediocre previous film? I don't buy that. This series and its lead actor work beautifully without any prior reference point. It's film noir. Dark, moody, shadowy. THAT'S the whole point. Not whether it faithfully recreates the original source material.

Jupiter said...

The Democrats need to learn how to bathe their whores. I think that's pretty much the full extent to which they can address the problem. A whore need not be filthy. A whore need not stink. You can be a Democrat whore without being filthy, or stinking. I guess that's just a little more effort than Janet Protaziewicz was willing, or able, to expend. Shitty little state, Wisconsin. Trying to make sense of this.

So, Hamas raids Israel, raping and killing and taking hostages.
Israel demands hostages back.
Hamas does not return them.
Israel locates the hostages and endeavors to rescue them.
The Hostages are kept in a civilian location, BY HAMAS
Israel begins rescue operations and the Hamas soldiers retaliate, sending in reinforcements.
Many civilians are caught in the crossfire resulting in death and injury.

As I understand it, here are the options:
Hamas could have let the hostages go.
Hamas could have not put the hostages in a civilian location
The civilians could have not cooperated with Hama and their plan to house hostages in their neighborhood.
Hamas could have held their fire and not counter-attacked in a civilian location

But I am supposed to be the monster because I fault Hamas for the loss of life rather than the Israelis. I should fault Israel for rescuing their people rather than letting them remain illegally (against all international laws, mind you) detained.

I just hope that I am never a citizen of a country that would not leave one option unconsidered to get me rescued.... Oh, wait.

At least 10 people were injured in a Wisconsin rooftop party shooting, police say

Excerpt:
"Emergency personnel responded to what police believe may have been a high school graduation party when the shooting started, just before 1 a.m. Sunday.

Police found one teen who suffered multiple gunshot wounds bleeding in the street, and rushed in to the apartment building on Johnson Street, Barnes said.

“Officers watched as dozens of people rushed out of the building, running in panic and tripping over one another, simply trying to find safety,” he said.

After running up 12 flights of stairs to reach those at the party, police said they found a chaotic scene. Authorities estimated there were several hundred people on the rooftop.

The early morning has the cleanest air, the quietest time of the day, the fewest people, if early enough a view of the stars, and offers an illusion of space. Once people awake none of this lasts, peace is lost.

Also a lovely camaraderie amongst the early risers, a curt and peaceful acknowledgement that we're sharing a space and are both members of the same tribe. It reminds us to appreciate the things in life that we take for granted. May I also suggest reading the poetry of Wordsworth and Shelley (his nature poems with leaves of ethereal hues).
