"Former President Donald Trump s campaign is hiring extra medics, loading up on fans and water bottles and allowing supporters to carry umbrellas..."

"... to an outdoor rally Sunday in Las Vegas, where temperatures are expected to exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit.... Campaign organizers say they will have ample water bottles to hand out to attendees and that cooling tents will be place throughout the venue. Misting fans will be given out. The campaign has paid for additional EMS services to be on site in the case of emergency. The U.S. Secret Service will be making an exception to allow people to bring in personal water bottles and and umbrellas. During a Trump rally in Arizona on Thursday, the Phoenix Police Department said 11 people were transported to hospitals, treated and released for heat exhaustion. Many Trump’s supporters waited in line for hours and some were unable to get inside before the venue reached capacity. The temperature reached a record 113 degrees Fahrenheit... that day...."

ABC News reports.

He's got dedicated supporters.

Former President Donald J. Trump stood in blazing heat in a Las Vegas park on Sunday and directly appealed to working-class voters by promising to eliminate taxes on tips for hospitality workers.

But beyond that proposal, little at Mr. Trump’s campaign rally suggested that his new status as a felon had changed his message. And when Mr. Trump’s teleprompter apparently stopped working, his speech — which his campaign advisers had billed as focused on issues of local concern to Nevada voters — devolved into familiar stories and riffs.

“I got no teleprompters, and I haven’t from the beginning,” Mr. Trump said after speaking for roughly 15 minutes, though his speech included excerpts from prepared remarks that his campaign had provided to reporters. “That probably means we’ll make a better speech now.”
Here's the video, so you can judge for yourself.

I see he kept his jacket on for the entire performance. He didn't wear a tie and had the top of the shirt unbuttoned. I didn't notice him sipping water, and he didn't seem to tire or weaken. Impressive. The temperature reached 102° in Las Vegas today.

I was in Phoenix last summer for business. I joked about it being a dry heat and without missing a beat the guy I was talking to answered, "So is a convection oven."

I was just in Sacramento for a week and temperatures hit 104 - not unusual, but I'm out of practice at dry heat, as I now live near Houston (where, today, the heat index will be 105 though the mercury reads 93).

I determined that, in contrast to my youthful opinion, I now prefer humid heat - the sweat doesn't evaporate off me instantly, so I'm generally grossly dripping with sweat, therefore even a slight breeze (or a hand fan, of the waving kind or the electric kind) feels cooling. Fanning myself in the dry heat in Sac was just blowing hot air around. Exactly like a convection oven.

Jamie said...

Oh, and Chuck - what's more actually helpful: water, extra EMT presence, cooling tents, and misters, or the speechifier interrupting himself to "see if someone is ok"? What did Obama do, jump off the stage to check a pulse and perform CPR? Call 911? Or burnish his Lightbringer cred by performatively and no doubt sonorously calling attention to his own deep commitment to Caring?

Jamie said...

That humidity is no joke.

This is 100% true for those working in the heat. I would like to amend my comment of a few minutes ago: Dry heat is less dangerous, I think I've heard(?), because you ARE sweating (even if you don't notice it) and it DOES evaporate, cooling you. In humidity, you don't get that cooling effect naturally - you have to move the air to feel it.

So what I should have said is, I feel more comfortable in my Houston-suburb backyard where there is almost always a breeze, because the cooling effect of that breeze on wet skin is noticeable. In Sacramento, I felt less comfortable sitting outside in the heat because whatever sweat my skin was producing instantly vanished with no feeling of cooling.

In neither case am I talking about WORKING in the heat! I used to do that, and courted heat exhaustion in both conditions. Stay hydrated, find or create as much shade as you can, and take breaks!

"Dry heat is less dangerous, I think I've heard(?), because you ARE sweating (even if you don't notice it) and it DOES evaporate, cooling you."

This is the "dry heat" risk. I don't know about "more" or "less" dangerous, but your sweat evaporates so quickly that you don't realize you're becoming dehydrated.

Mason G said...

Ok- found this:

Dry heat can feel more tolerable initially, as sweat evaporates quickly, providing some relief. On the other hand, dry heat can cause dehydration faster.

Humid heat hinders sweat evaporation, making you feel hotter. Humid heat is notorious for making it difficult for your body to release heat, potentially leading to heat exhaustion or even heatstroke.

So I guess it's a kind of 'six of one, half dozen of the other' thing.

Jamie said...

Thanks, Mason G! Basically it appears that one's perception of comfort is irrelevant to the danger one may be in.

In high summer, I'll also put a jug of electrolyte-spiked lemonade on the tractor to draw from. Monitor the color of your pee as a way of making sure you're not getting dehydrated - there are color charts online for reference. Sweating is normal, but being miserable is a sign to get out of the sun. Before A/C, it was customary to split the ranch day with a siesta, just to get out of the high sun for a few hours.

Democrats despise MAGA Republicans with a white-hot hatred. The GOPe barely tolerates them and at that, it's just every couple of years in order to solicit their votes. Trump is the only major candidate who supports and fights for them.

You probably don't need any help doing the math on that, I would imagine.

I expect a lot of people who like the Burning Man festival can't understand going to a MAGA rally if it's hot. (Or if it's cold.) (Or if it's got Trump and his supporters attending.) (Nietzche can explain the Progs; I cannot.) (Can't even spell Neitzchfde). (Ultimately, I blame Hegel.)

I asked Google how hot it typically is in Las Vegas this time of year, and Google said: "In June, Las Vegas experiences high temperatures with an average daily maximum of around 100°F (38°C). The temperature can often exceed 105°F (40°C) during heatwaves. Nights are relatively cooler but still warm, with average lows of around 70°F (21°C)." So if the temperature for the Trump rally was 101°F, that's within the range that people there are used to.

For comparison, I asked Google about the average high in south Florida, where I used to live, and middle Carolina where I now live, and in both cases the answer was 88°F. I suppose Democrats and other wimps think anything hotter than 65°F is unbearable and probably a MAGA plot.

By the way, the same source says the average temperature in New York City in June is 80°F. I've lived in NYC, and that's forking hot in the City!

It looks as though Trump is going to do well in the "Sun Belt" and in parts of the "Rust Belt". Go figure!

Cowards were content in 2020 to sit on the sidelines and let the democrats steal the election even though they knew the election was obviously fraudulent.

Now even the cowards see that there is no alternative but to stand up and support Trump.

The staging, the TelePromTers, the repurposed music, the dumb deplorables in attendance, the insane speechwriting and finally Trump's revelatory psychopathological babbling and physical/verbal glitches.

But then, in addition to watching in real time, there are the brilliant clips done by Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) on X/Twitter. Here is Rupar's brilliant thread on today's scorching rally speech. These are punches that seem to be landing, inasmuch as Scott Adams has gone out of his way to create a verb, "to Rupar," which in Adams-speak means to cut quotes out of contect to mislead people. I have some sympathy for waiters -- I always tip well -- and my ASSumption is that they aren't crushing it, money-wise. Reducing taxes on the poor is not a bad idea, I don't think. Reducing taxes on everyone is not a bad idea -- if spending is reduced (which, alas, won't happen -- sorry about that debt, you youngsters)

What other names, sock puppet? Lonejustice? Rich? Mark? Chuck? INGA??

No teleprompter?
No problem!
President Trump just finished up an EPIC 90 minute rally in 100° weather without notes or a teleprompter.👊
Joe could NEVER do that.

There are teleprompters on either side of him. He claimed that they were malfunctioning and said he was going to stiff the contractors. Sounds like bullshit to me.

And you do realize he would have had air conditioning blowing on him? It was probably twenty degrees cooler where he was standing.

You know that's never going to go away, right?

You have spent the last four years claiming that Biden is a criminal and 20 million illegal votes were cast, with no evidence whatsoever.

Trump himself said he was going to stiff the contractors who were responsible for the teleprompters. And why wouldn't he have air conditioning (and maybe even a cooling vest) blowing on him?

LOL! Freder, Trump didn't say the teleprompters weren't there- he said they stopped working, you dumbass. And I don't see the AC units you claim must be there. Prove it, you dumb fuck.
