Don't forget, VP Candidate Joe Biden was the sop given from the Chicago machine to the East Coast establishment, so they could cover their bases and assure the votes. It is so disrespectful of Kamala Harris to be looking to Newsom as the heir apparent. How dare he swan around like that! And how dare Democrats openly talk about swapping him in for Biden without even mentioning what they'd do about her. I can't stand her, but this disrespect is intolerable. And I think I'm feeling something a lot of women feel. And I won't add speak for black people but I would like to hear from black people on this topic.

Regardless of what Democrats and pundits want in the coming months; short of a President Harris, we have President Biden for 6 more months. In that time, we have a war in the Middle East, a war on the European continent, and Chinese fighter jets circling Taiwan. I can speak for myself and say I'm not "enjoying it".

If Biden can't stand trial and can't run for the nomination in a couple of months, because he can't make it through a 90-minute debate; he is unfit to be President, and you need to explain how the Vice President is unqualified to take his place.

Ms. Althouse, or do you prefer Professor. Please tell me this is sarcasm. It walks the knife edge so perfectly I can't be sure. If it's not sarcasm, I have to ask you what Kamala Harris has done to warrant respect.

Of course, I also have to ask what did Joe Biden ever do to warrant respect. Occupying an office doesn't entitle one too much respect in my book. There are a lot of judges who deserve contempt, but I wouldn't show it to them in their courtroom. I'm past the time when I feel I should respect the office if not the occupant.

I don't always try to be polite to everyone I reply to on this blog, but when I reply to you I aspire to being respectful because this is one of the most varied and thoughtful forums on the internet. Thank you for that in these contentious and troubled times.

They figure prominently in the sculptures, dance, literature and paintings of many South Asian and Southeast Asian cultures.[12]

The apsaras are described to be beautiful, youthful and elegant, and are said to be able to change their shape at will; literally anyone will fall for their beauty. There are two types of apsaras—laukika (worldly) and daivika (divine). They are great in the art of dancing, and often wives of the gandharvas, the court musicians of Indra. The apsaras reside in the palaces of the gods and entertain them by dancing to the music made by the Gandharvas. The 26 apsaras of Indra's court are each said to symbolise a different facet of the performing arts, drawing comparisons to the Muses of ancient Greece. They are also renowned for seducing rishis in order to prevent them from attaining divine powers. Urvashi, Menaka, Rambha, Tilottama and Ghritachi are the most famous among the apsaras.[13][14]

Normally governors make for good presidential candidates.

There's a big problem with that right now- especially for the demoncRATs.

Every single demoncRAT governor during the covidiocy fully demonstrated that were domestic enemies of the Constitution as they trampled over individual rights like they were meaningless. For Newsome, the firs attack meme, for it will be in meme form not attack ad, will be a picture of the lone surfer being arrested by multiple cops- with the caption- "America under Newsome".

For Whitmer, a display of paint chips from any paint retailer- "Under Whitmer- your choice is white."

Every demoncRAT governor has something like this that can be easily made into an attack meme. Republicans have several governors who did much better. Kristi Noem the best, but she's prone to shooting herself in the foot.

By the ay, the new 95 second ad Trump released that consists of nothing but Biden talking with Trump on the other side of the split screen is brilliant.

Because supposedly those 350 million Americans agreed to the US Constitution. Althouse never said she wanted Kamala Harris to be the Vice President. But the "names" she asked for earlier today are people, supposedly acting at the behest 81 million voters, claimed Kamala Harris was qualified to be Vice President, and if Joe Biden steps aside, she's the President. Asking the Vice President to step aside, because the President is no longer qualified to be President and they don't like Harris, seems a de facto attempt to usurp power without an election. Don't disrespect the Constitution on your way to install a new President.

But wasn’t I just reading that California is facing a serious budget shortfall? Should Newsom be running for President or should he be trying to fix his state’s budget? No, he’s not good enough to do both.

At least when Dukakis ran for President the smoke and mirrors that was the “Massachusetts Miracle” had not yet given way to economic reality. That would allow the rest of us to call Biden a criminal and an obviously terrible president resigning in disgrace. Whoever replaced him would have to answer for the failures of the Regime and would have to defend the obvious criminality that caused the resignation.

But if Biden has a stroke and is in a coma or dies and the funeral is sometime in late October there will be beautiful eulogies to his 50 years in office and anyone that criticizes the regime is attacking a guy in a coma or who just died. The replacement walks in with a clean slate.

Option 2 has more benefits.

Churchill's dictum, and it was a good one, was always to use a French word preferentially over a Latin word, and an Anglo-Saxon word over a French word. "Oily" is from Middle French, as is "greasy". "Oleaginous" is Medieval Latin. So is "unctuous".

However, "slimy" is a good Old English word, from slimig, and will do nicely for that worthless heap of filth. Another Old English word that suits him is smeoruwig, which means greasy or oily, and comes down to us in the word "smear".

NBC or maybe ABC had an excellent news article on how the D's could replace Biden.

1) Biden will have to drop out. Its impossible under the current situation and rules to depose him

2) Once Biden is gone, the 3000 or so Biden Delegates and the Superdelegates can choose whoever they want. But if Biden says "Pick Kam" its hard to see how the D's could not nominate her.

3) However, if Biden doesnt care or doesnt support Harris she wont get it. Harris for a lot of reasons, isn't beloved in the Black Community. If Newsome offered to replace her with another Black person as his VP, or just keep her as VP, the crucial black vote (they vote as a bloc and follow their leaders) would go along.

4) The average D voter doesn't really care who the leaders pick as the candidate. Unlike R voters, they will troop the polls and vote for anybody as long as they have D after their name. If Biden goes, and doesn't care who succeeds him, it will be decided in a "Smoke filled room" and the whole D party will go along. they're robots.

This sounds like one of those subtle ones, like the difference between "that" and "which" Though used interchangeably by many people, one of them is always correct and the other wrong, depending on what you mean to convey.

Hillary ran particularly bone-headed tin-eared campaigns against Obama in the 2008 primaries and against Trump in 2016. Only some serious rigging got her past Bernie in the 2016 primaries.

Obama tweeted:
"Bad debate nights happen. Trust me, I know. But this election is still a choice between someone who has fought for ordinary folks his entire life and someone who only cares about himself. Between someone who tells the truth; who knows right from wrong and will give it to the American people straight — and someone who lies through his teeth for his own benefit. Last night didn’t change that, and it’s why so much is at stake in November. http://joebiden.com"

Replacement isn't happening any time soon.

If she wasn't a complete shallow dingbat, they wouldn't be considering passing her by. This wouldn't happen to Tulsi Gabbard.

Men aren't blindly loyal to other men who are corrupt and dangerous. Gavin is douchebag, so is Biden. I don't care if they walk around with penises between their legs. Both assholes.

I don't believe in the infallibility of men, nor the infallibility of women. We are all equal when it comes being good or bad, smart or stupid, genuine or completely full of shit.

The Dems are going to replace Biden with Newsome a white male and bypass the current VP a DEI black female?

Not happening.

Joe is not going to step down right up until the moment he does.

I'm not saying he will, I'm saying there will be no forewarning if he does. He was never going to wake up today and begin musing in public about potentially stepping down. That's not a viable strategy.

Gusty Winds said...

Althouse It is so disrespectful of Kamala Harris to be looking to Newsom as the heir apparent. How dare he swan around like that! And how dare Democrats openly talk about swapping him in for Biden without even mentioning what they'd do about her.

Dear Lord Jesus Christ. Please let the Democrats replace Joe Biden with Kamala Harris in the general election and not Gavin Newsome. in nomine Patris et Filii et Spiritus Sancti.

Gusty Winds said...

Professor Althouse: Why are you invoking the liberal intersectional loyalty expected from African Americans from feminist white women?

You can't stand Kamala either. What makes you think black men can like her? Kamala is horribly stupid. Isn't it kind of an insult to expect them to be offended because of skin color? It's been dangerous enough for her to be a heartbeat away from the Presidency.

Although I wouldn't support her now, Condoleezza Rice wouldn't have been set aside by the GOP is the situation were the same. She had a working brain, and could actually speak intellectually. Are black people required to have Kamala carry their torch because white feminists demand it???

But trust me. I'm on your side. I hope if there is a replacement, I hope the Democrats give Kamala her DEI turn. If she actually was elected, we deserve to get fucked.

Gusty Winds said...

Do liberal feminists REALLY want to put another woman up against Trump and lose?

The closest we will get to the first female President is if Trump picks Tulsi Gabbard as his VP. He would serve four years, and she would be the next GOP nominee. I think she'd win.

Democrats are the REAL racists and sexists. The oily Newsome savior fascination is just further proof.

Does personal competence matter? Dems have proven that they can steer the ship (albeit poorly) with mentally incompetent POTUS. Harris is and always has been the perfect politician to be led from behind the scenes.

It's definitely because she's a woman, Ann. I mean, what else could it possibly be?
Oh wait, there is that minor matter of her approval polling numbers being lower than those of Biden's. Naa...

I'm not black but the "Disrespect" for Harris in the Black community exists because she has ZERO roots in the black community. Biden got the nomination in 2020 over Harris, because the black leadership picked Biden over Harris. If they'd gone for Harris, she would've won SC, and things would be different.

Obama, our half-white Hawaiian President from Columbia/Yale, earned his place in the black community by marrying a black woman, moving to Chicago, and working as a "Community organizer" and later representing a black majority district for 8 years.

Harris by comparison, is a half-indian, half-jamacian woman, married to Jewish man. She grew up in the SF bay area and Canada. Her political career has consisted of being city and state DA and then being a US Senator. She's lived in SF bay area, almost her entire life.

Harris has no "power base" in the Democrat Party. Whether the black Leadership will support her if Biden drops out is anyone's guess.

Why weren't all the slights against Hillary disrespectful? The snide remarks, or alternatively-- the times Hillary wasn't mentioned, plans were made without a care, or nod to how it would affect her standing, or any attempt to seek her input. There were numerous times when Hillary got the short-shrift, or simply ignored during key policy decisions during Obama.

You never seemed to feel something a lot of women feel then.

I think they are more likely to use the Governor from Maryland.

Abrams is also slimmed down a bit. She will probably be on the ticket one way or the other and would allow them to go with the oil slick from California.

The people who pick the eventual nominee should be thinking about who will be more resistant to Trump.

They are probably going to be thinking about DEI boxes instead which is a big mistake.

I don't find Kamela worthy of respect either.

But we have a party that worships at the alters of race and gender.

Drop kicking Kamala is a HUGE sign of DISrespect for blacks and women in general.

More than enough to scuttle the election for the left and maybe for years after.

As a non-negro, but person far more accultured as an American negro than Kamala Harris, let me say the best play for the Democrats is for Biden to resign the Presidency, and let Kamala be the first whatever for the remainder of the term in exchange for NOT seeking office. Bump Buttigieg up to Veep to lock down the queer vote. Then do what you want with whomever for this year's election.

I feel pretty safe in saying that from the ratification of the Twelfth Amendment to maybe the selection of Dick Cheney, there has never been a VP candidate chosen based on the ability to fulfill the Constitutional requirements of the Office. The VP slot has been a sop to the largest bloc of party supporters not represented by the top of the ticket, often quite openly so, giving them the impression their man is going to be near the halls of power without being in them (i.e., it's not worth a bucket of warm piss, as one VP opined.) That isn't to say that some VPs haven't been eminently qualified or powerful figures in their own right, just that the choice has functionally never been driven by the Constitutional outline of the job. The modern mania for a 'co-Presidency' really reflects the explosion of the Executive branch after FDR (It maybe apocryphal but Harry Truman was supposedly not even aware the Manhattan Project existed before he had to make the A-bomb decision) more than a return to the Constitutional roots of the job. It might have been possible to make the case that Harris was chosen Constitutionally if Biden hadn't felt it necessary to say the quiet part out loud to the Democrat Party bloc that is obsessed with the Didn't Earn It bean-counting.

She's not just assassination insurance, she's also 25th Amendment insurance. Standing up to Biden is not something she's going to do. Certainly not in public.

If Biden (or the Democrats) liked her, they'd be pushing for him to resign now. Letting her be president for a few months would empower her to run in 2024.

Almost nobody is talking about the need for Biden to resign from the White House now.

And everybody's talking about the need for Biden to resign from the 2024 campaign.

Implicitly, that's a lot of people saying they don't like Harris. And she was horrible in 2020 campaign, and her support was negligible.

It is only a terrible plan if one thinks that the president and vp are going to be making decisions and exercising power.

And who believes THAT about the current administration?

RigelDog said...

Althouse, it IS strange that Dems and their media reps are only talking about other potential candidates--and not even mentioning Kamala Harris.

If Biden is not on the ticket come November, I can't see any alternative BUT Kamala for President. I don't know why this obvious choice is being elided. Putting Kamala up would not tick off the base, not set off the Woke, and would enable use of the campaign money that's been raised. Anyone else would be unthinkable.
