He rejected the PDC format. Also the PDC schedule of three debates in late September and October. Proposed two debates, one in June and one in September. That's both before either man is officially nominated, and a good two months before Election Day.
I've not been in the camp that thinks Biden will be replaced but scheduling the last debate months before Election Day definitely feels like an opening to stiff Trump from being able to debate a potential replacement.

The early timing actually makes sense. It’s the final acid test for Biden before the convention.
It was pointed out on the twats that by ditching the Commission on Presidential Debates, Biden can keep RFK Jr. out, even though under normal rules he'd be in.
Personally, I doubt that this will accomplish much of anything. The rules will be stacked in his favor, and the moderators will try to protect him as much as possible. That said, when the cameras roll, Trump can do what he wants, and they'll be hard-pressed to stop him without looking like idiots. Meanwhile, they'll try to make the entire debate about Trump's legal issues, which will backfire on them.
My guess is that Trump lands a couple of solid blows, Biden doesn't do anything to force himself out of the race, and nothing changes in the polls.
My advice to Trump is:
(1) Biden can't control his anger. Get under his skin by challenging his lies, particularly the lies with personal/family story lines. Facts are Joe's worst enemies. If you can get him off balance Biden will tip over.
(2) Challenge Biden to explain the details behind his claims and positions. In particular, force him to explain economic claims that involve numbers. Joe struggles horribly with numbers. He also has zero understanding of economic and business related matters.

Here is how the debate negotiations will proceed- CNN will give the two parties a "balanced" list that is Jake Tapper, Wolf Blitzer, Christiana Amanpour, and Anderson Cooper, and the two will have to choose 1 or 2 from that list or there is no debate. They might even drag out former "right-leaning" employees like Brian "Tater" Steltzer and Don Lemon"head" if Trump doesn't like the first list.
What will not happen, ever, is what I proposed earlier- that Trump gets to pick half the moderators himself with Biden getting to pick the other half (or whoever does Biden's thinking for him). If by some miracle Trump does get to choose a moderator and Biden doesn't run away like a whipped cur, then Trump should choose Stefanik.

It's good that the perhaps will debate. It's OK to not have an audience and good to not allow interuptions, but they should do away with moderators asking questions. Let the candidates make opening statements and then let them question each other in an orderly way, such as time limits for questions, answers and rebuttals.

Nothing has been working for Biden, least of all the imagined lawfare campaign to destroy Trump. Polls today show Trump head in 5 of the 6 states that will decide the election -- no movement in months. And nothing has changed about how bad Biden is in any unscripted moment -- not that he's so great in reading scripted comments off the teleprompter. It's a demonstration, if anyone needed it, about how bad Biden's internal polling must be to cause his 'advisors' to take this risk -- we're well beyond a Hail Mary pass, and deeply into the territory of St. Jude Thaddeus, patron of lost causes.
Either Erickson is right (see Lem's post above) or they're hoping Trump will bully the "well meaning elderly man with a poor memory" and get Joe some sympathy votes. (At least that's how they'll spin the debate.) I would be suspicious of their motives but considering some of the stuff that's been coming out of the Biden White House (see their Israel policy) I'm more inclined to think they're pulling a stunt that they think is slick. And if you've seen Botox Nancy's recent performance at the Oxford Union it's quite possible the whole crew has gone nuts.
