An idea about structuring the presidential debates to hurt Trump that I think is more likely to help him.

I'm reading "Donald Trump Is 'A Colossal A**hole,' Jeffrey Katzenberg Says; Hasn’t Yet Reached Out To Taylor Swift To Endorse 'Decent' Joe Biden" (Deadline Hollywood). I just want to focus on one thing, Katzenberg's idea about how to rein in the Trump "chaos" at the presidential debates:
“When you look back and you just say, Okay, well, there’s a solution for that everybody in this room knows, everyone in media and entertainments knows, it’s very simple,” Katzenberg said of the possible rules of any Biden vs Trump face-to-face to stop the latter from steamrolling over everyone. “If you have two minutes to speak, you speak, and then at the end of two minutes the mic goes dead. Then you go to 30 seconds as a reply, and then the mic goes dead.”

AKA – Donald Trump’s worst nightmare.

Welcome to Trump's nightmare. I say he could nail this limitation. He can make very pithy statements quickly. He can either adapt to the microphone shut-off and speak clearly and shut up, or he can run on and interrupt anyway, and just rattle Biden and leave us wondering what he said. The lip-reading effort could go viral. Can't A.I. read lips and insert Trump's voice? Meanwhile, Biden is the one whose mind is slowing and who garbles his speech, fails to keep his talking points straight, and wanders into puzzling personal anecdotes. I think the stricter discipline would be more likely to hurt Biden.

But why am I saying this? You tell me:

Why is Althouse wafting this theory?

Unfortunately, you can't check multiple boxes (checking a 2nd box unchecks the 1st).

I think people are so tired of the dirty tricks against Trump that any transparent attempt to undermine him will only help him. That's why further indictments don't hurt him--it's not because people don't care if Trump breaks the law, but that we are so disgusted with the sham indictments we've already seen that we start with the assumption they are just another dirty trick.

I'm not sure the conversation in the comments section will be necessarily "elevating" but it will likely be entertaining. Even if Trump sticks to the two minutes, he will be giving Biden an intense gaze that will fluster Biden. I predict there will be numerous "well, anyway,..." uttered by Biden as he trails off and forgets what he was supposed to be talking about.

What is it about extreme leftists, that cant grasp the concept of rules apply to both sides?

As noted, Biden cant tell you what day of the week it is in 2 minutes. Trump wins this sillyness hands down.

If I was incharge of mute button, I would use when they go off topic, to avoid the topic.

How about two men on stage with no moderators? Just back-and-forth between them. They could have a Top 10 issue list and nothing more.

Angry Joe would rant and ramble and shake his fist at an invisible giant rabbit.
Angry Don would rant and slice and dredge up Crossfire Hurricane and Hunter 1,000 times.

Trump needs to let Biden speak more and destroy himself. Last time he made the guy look sympathetic like he was getting bullied. Moronic swing voters wanted to protect the dotard.

Debate like the sandhill cranes.

Aggie said...

Flip it around a little: Each speaker gets two minutes, period. How much of Joe's two minutes is going to be Joe, staring blankly at the camera?

But progressive leftists always think they're being clever when they figure out a new way to bestow unfair advantages. And it doesn't surprise me at all that the Party of Censorship thinks turning off the microphones of their opponents is the same thing as winning an argument.

Christopher B said...

I think Gunner is probably right. It would likely be a wash.

Trump could handle the time limit, and if he kept speaking into a dead mic (I'm assuming no soundproof booth arrangement) it would probably rattle Biden. Biden hyped up to Dork Brandon levels ala the SOTU speech would probably be able to stay roughly on point for two minutes. It's better to let him ramble.

I'd tell Trump's team to insist both mics go dead and the *moderator* have 30 seconds (but only 30 seconds) every 5 minutes.

Shorter Katzenberg: the people should not hear what the terrible man has to say.

Make interrupting a felony.

But don’t charge Biden when he does it too.

I'd say #1, but, hey. I'm here. So it's the last two. Just let Biden be Biden. It's only a matter of time before the steroids make his head explode.

If so many very rich and billionaires are on Biden's side, maybe the Democrats are not the party of the ordinary man and woman.

I don’t see a definitive limitation on the moderators interrupting Trump and/or speaking for Biden. And like DOJ Biden will be allowed to interrupt. Also smirk, mug and make snarky noises while Trump speaks.

Iman said...

I propose the following:

* The moderator states the topics (ex., Domestic/Foreign Policy priorities, Economy, Crime, etc.) and no personal opinions, riffing by moderator allowed
* Drug testing for candidates and moderator
* No external communication devices; no pens/pencils/paper/smart devices allowed
* 3 words verbally given to each candidate; candidates will be asked to remember/repeat those 3 words at the end of their closing statements
* 3 minutes for each response then mic shut-off
* 2 minute extreme close-up camera shot for each response and then 1 minute pan back for view of opponents body language reaction

Oh, and Jeff Katzenjammer can shove it in the place free of solar ray exposure.

rehajm said...

There are only awful candidates so I choose to abstain from voting. Why can’t we have a boring choice?

mikee said...

I'm gonna choose "None of the Above" because the idea of such a controlled debate is anathema to the purpose of a presidential debate, which is to get at least one non-scripted answer or explosion from the disfavored candidate for the pundits to enjoy discussing.

Iman said...

I forgot to add both candidates shall reach down and touch their toes while standing.

MadisonMan said...

LOL. As if this would mask the horrificness of Biden! You know Biden'll start saying something stupid like India is full of xenophobes and the mic-controllers will cut him off 1m and 45s early, and then shrug their shoulders and say "technical difficulties".
Trump can adapt. It's the TV personality in him. Biden is a politician only. He's not used to being told to stop speaking.

Because Trump’s the superhero and we’re his sidekick??

wendybar said...

Because it's true isn't an answer. That's mine. Joe Biden would take two minutes to try THINK about an answer,(or figure out what is going on and where he is) or walk off in a daze to a corner shaking the invisable mans hand.

So many people think "Trump is an a$$hole" is a bug. But others consider it a feature.
After the election we'll see which viewpoint prevails.

Bob Boyd said...

There is no WHY, since the blog post simply is, and since all of us are simply trapped in the comments, like bugs in Amber.

Bob Boyd said...

The unspoken advantage of a time limit would be to cut off Joe Biden. They're always trying to keep Biden from going off the prompter and rambling incoherently or uttering some "gaffe", which he is famous for. Keeping Biden from damaging himself has been a constant problem for his handlers. The more people hear from Biden, the worse it is for him.

I think there are a lot of people who be enjoying the secret ballot this year, who will vote for Trump and never admit it.

I don't think Trump or Biden wants to debate RFK Jr.

Such a format would be abused by the moderator/s who will certainly be Democrats. So, Biden gets 5 minutes and Trump will get about 90 seconds or less.

However, I am pretty sure Althouse is correct- Trump will probably benefit no matter what they do.

The only debate the candidates should have is the two men on the stage with no moderators and no audience- alternating questions- 1 minute to ask with the other candidate given 2 minutes to answer. I don't think we even need mic shutoffs- the two men, if they want to be President, should be able to control any filibustering by their opponent, and if they can't, then they probably don't qualify to be President in the first place.

“Everyone in media and entertainment knows…” says the man who named his truly dumb media and entertainment platform after a guy who smells bicycle seat. And everyone not in media and entertainment knew it would fail, which it did faster than predicted.

(Noting for the record that bigwigs in media and entertainment spent hundreds of millions in the belief that CNN would be able to charge people what they were getting for free from CNN and not watching anyway.)

I’ve interviewed Katzenberg. He’s a colossal asshole whose ego has its own zip code. His worldview is suited to a time when “everyone in media and entertainment” controlled what went on in media and entertainment. That time is passed.

No I can’t. You set up up the poll with radio buttons — checking a second box unchecks the first.

There’s not going to be a debate between FJB and Trump. The Dems can’t afford to chance it. They trot him out in highly controlled situations, well rested and well drugged, and he still most often screws it up. He’ll just turn and wander off. Things like that. It’s at the point now where he can’t really even read a teleprompter anymore. They are in a lose/lose situation here, it’s just that FJB screwing up before the country is worse for them than dodging debates. After all, their opponent is OrangeManBad, and a criminal to boot. Everyone will understand why FJB wouldn’t want to debate such a loathsome person.

Mark said...

Again -- it was at the debates where Trump threw away the presidency. Two minutes is enough, one minute is enough, ten seconds is enough for Trump to repeatedly be obnoxious and toxic enough to alienate voters. Because Trump has proven himself incapable of being a grown-up disciplined man for even those ten seconds. Trump is even going to obnoxious AH himself right into a stay in government accommodations for contempt of court.

So Biden has a ready-made excuse to refuse to be anywhere near Trump. And let tough-guy Trump whine and cry and moan, which has been his daily routine also.

Kakistocracy said...

Debating Trump is like playing chess with a pigeon. You can't. He just knocks over the pieces and craps on the board.

Biden did well against Trump in the 2020 debates. He’s got a certain “aww shucks” grandpa charisma that works well for many voters, especially against Trump’s endless self-centered bluster.

Biden is clearly more tired now. But Trump also has acquired a significant handicap since: he goes completely off the rails to rant about the 2020 election and its aftermath. There’s a small section of the electorate who cares, but to most people it makes him seem stuck in past grievances and unable to move forward. Biden might be clever to keep him ranting and let Trump himself remind people of why they don’t want him back.

There's something called an "elevator pitch". It's made by people seeking a job, or managers trying to persuade a senior person to do something. It has to be short and concentrated enough to deliver between say the lobby of the building and the 15th floor.

Trump can make an elevator pitch and more in two minutes time. Biden can't get his rhetorical hands out of his pockets in two minutes. Two minute limit? Trump wins.

“Had” not “has”. FJB just mumbles and makes things up on the fly anymore. His stories used to be almost plausible (until you dug into them). Now? They often don’t even make sense.

The problem isn't that Trump might steamroll over Biden, it's that Biden would let him.

I picked the first option, but would have picked the first and last if it let me.

It's OK, Ann.
I voted one each for the options I liked.

And they're still going to vote for Biden, Joe.

The only reason for Presidential debates now is for the media to ask the questions about the issues they care. Immigration and Inflation are the top two issues according to polls, so you can count on the moderator to ask questions about Student Loans, Abortion Rights, and Trans Rights.

There's something called an "elevator pitch".

This takes me back a bunch of years. I was attending a technical conference that included people who worked in industry as well as academic researchers. At one point there was a session where attendees could volunteer to suggest areas that the field might expand into as a potentially rich source of research topics. I signed up and made my suggestion, and so did about 20 others. Afterwards the moderator noted that all 3 of us from industry — who knew how to make an elevator pitch — ended within our allotted time. Every single academic participant ran over and had to be requested to wrap up. I expect Trump to do well in that format; Biden not so much.

Plus you professors are a loquacious lot, that’s for sure.

The moderators are the main problem as far as hurting one candidate. Remember when one moderator was given a list of softball questions to ask Biden? Instead each candidate should choose their own moderator to ask questions that the other candidate must answer and allow a statement by both sides on that question. Each moderator must ask the questions that a candidate has given them. No more moderator selected from the “acceptable list” by the media. No more independent moderator selecting their own questions that may show a bias for their preferred candidate and ignoring questions that are clearly shown as a top concern in national polls.

No moderator should be allowed to interrupt a candidate during their allotted time to speak. Format should be 5 minutes to speak with another 5 minutes for the replay. At the end of all the questions each candidate will make a 5 minute speech with no interruptions and no reply by the other candidate. Order of the candidates will be decided by coin flip.

Questions must include the top 5 unprompted issues in the latest polls. This should eliminate biased questions that favor one party.
