Clyde said...: I just got home from my expedition Up North to see the eclipse. Mom lives in Michigan, so I went up to visit for a few days and we drove down to Tiffin, Ohio, where we got 3 minutes, 51 seconds of totality. It was awesome. On the other days, we went to the Henry Ford Museum on Friday, Kensington Metropark on Saturday (where we got up close and personal with some sand hill cranes and wild turkeys), a Detroit Tigers game on Sunday, and on Tuesday we went the Capital in Lansing and then visited Potter Park Zoo to see Pazi the Pallas' Cat. Today, I flew home with a four-hour layover in Chicago. It was a great trip!; 4/10/24, 9:48 PM

Virtual Railfan had a couple of eclipse shots in their Grab Bag last night. The one from Fairport NY was pretty dramatic though without a train. Louisville was outside the maximum totality zone in both 2017 and 2024. Fairport was much darker than I expected.; 4/11/24, 7:30 AM

The West had declared that the war in The Ukraine would continue until the last Ukrainian died..
But NOW! NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg suggested that Ukraine may eventually have to make concessions in the war with Russia.
but, then he continues with the endless war talk!
"Even if we believe and hope that the war will end in the near future, we need to support Ukraine for many years, to build their defences to deter future aggression," the NATO Secretary General said.
Stoltenberg said that he was not calling on Ukraine to make concessions now, and added that "real peace" will be achieved when "Ukraine prevails."

So, here's the deal..
IF you are russia.. You had BETTER Plan on taking out THE ENTIRE COUNTRY of The Ukraine.
If you leave even one acre; then NATO will admit That small plot of land into NATO.
NATO WANTS WAR.

The thing of it is:
It's looking more and more likely, that russia WILL be able to take the ENTIRE Ukraine.

Anyway... I wanted to thank the commenter who recommended The Witch Trials of JK Rowling podcast recently. I just started the third episode, which that commenter said was - I think "explosive"? But I found that the second episode really made me think about my objections to explicitly sexual books in elementary school, and possibly middle school, depending on the content, libraries. It didn't change my mind, but it did make me revisit my reasons for my objections, because the podcast producer was drawing parallels between these recent book "bannings" and the efforts of fundamentalist Christians in the 1990s to limit access or outright ban the Harry Potter books.

The lawyer interviewed on the podcast who represented the "First Amendment" side qualified his side's argument with the characterization that these books were "age appropriate," regardless of their viewpoint, and therefore access to them should not be limited. The lawyer on the other side, who had changed his mind about the books after reading them, said that - if I understood him correctly - even before changing his mind, he grew to believe that this was a case that needed to be lost. But once he did read the books, he also alluded to their value as literature, in encouraging kids to read and in their ultimately positive messages, even though he still thought they were "a little dark."

So, I can get behind both of these views, and they inform my continued objections to, say, Gender Queer and Maus (these are the two "banned" - limited-access - books with which I'm most familiar, which is not very familiar at all except for the controversial bits): I disagree that they're - or at any rate that the controversial bits are - age appropriate for middle school kids. I absolutely reject the idea of banning them outright but can entirely see not offering them in school libraries before high school. And, I recognize that I might find some literary value in them if I read them - can't rule it out - but that alone isn't sufficient to keep me from wanting not to expose younger children to explicit images of sexual acts.

Just because we don't object to various kinds of sexual behavior doesn't mean that we have to tell or show young children what that, or any, sexual behavior is. We're not living in communal huts any more where wakeful children experience their parents having intercourse, and we're not just talking about the procreative act here - we're talking about purely recreational sex that I - perhaps prudishly, perhaps out of caution for unintended consequences, you be the judge - don't perceive as having positive value for young kids.

My parents, apparently to educate me about sex, left a very artfully photographed but absolutely explicit "coffee table" book (ah, the '70s) on the subject in the top of my closet when I was 12. Sure, I got educated. They'd already salted the living room bookcase with sex-ed books geared toward younger children - that is, explanatory but without explicit imagery - and I'd already undergone the school's puberty training or whatever you want to call it, so I was familiar with the concepts and with the basic anatomy. But immediately after discovering this very explicit book, I started thinking of the boy I had a crush on - whom I would never even hold hands with, much less kiss - as a possible "sex partner." Everyone's mileage may vary, but I don't see how it was good for my 12yo self to be thinking in those terms.; 4/11/24, 1:19 PM
