"Many people with obesity... have fat deposits in the tongue and in the back of the throat. The neck gets larger with fat that narrows the airway..."

"... and the tongue gets larger in all directions, 'like blowing up a balloon'... During sleep, the tongue obstructs the flow of oxygen, repeatedly waking the person repeatedly.”

Writes Gina Kolata, in "Sleep Apnea Reduced in People Who Took Weight-Loss Drug, Eli Lilly Reports/The company reported results of clinical trials involving Zepbound, an obesity drug in the same class as Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy" (NYT).

That's good news, and I hope this drug helps with sleep apnea, which must be a terrible problem, but I'm blogging this because I was cheered up by the phrase "repeatedly waking the person repeatedly."

The reason that cheered me up is that I repeated "repeat" just yesterday, and I only noticed it when I saw myself quoted at Instapundit:
But we all know that’s why, and that dishonest flacks are making excuses for the mental incapacity of the President they foisted on us last time around.
Because it was quoted at Instapundit, it was too late to edit my original post, and I agonized over it. I hate when I repeat a word like that, and here the repeated word was "repeat."

I feel better now! You will feel better if Zepbound cures your sleep apnea. That's an immense betterment. But I feel teensy-tinily better seeing Gina Kolata make the same repeat-repeat repetition.

When I write or edit someone else's work, I go to great lengths and pain to avoid using the same (significant) word in a sentence or even a paragraph.
You are forgiven.

Repeating the adverb is a frequently made mistake people make frequently. That it is made in the NYTimes tells you just how far standards have fallen.

I thought the repetition enhanced the LOL. Saying “Frum and others will instruct us, repeatedly, in articles iterating the talking point” is just blah.

I always refer to Elmore Leonard's Rules for Writing. I get a chuckle out of them, and then proceed to commit a slew of these errors, repeatedly!

Well, that's about what I would have said if I wanted to bullshit that I'd done it on purpose (or approximately on purpose).

Gina's mistake looks like it was missed in revision. It's easy to rewrite a sentence, moving words around, and not see a word left from a past version. Computers with cut/paste have made this too easy.

The Althouse mistake -- using two versions of the same word in one sentence -- I do all the damn time. I also hate when it slides past a proofreading and goes to post.

"sleep apnea, which must be a terrible problem"

I have it, and it's not that big a deal. I use a CPAP (Continuous positive airway pressure) machine and it eliminates the breathing issue. The biggest problem with sleep apnea is not being awakened (not in a real sense, it can be momentary and unknow), it's having your breathing interrupted. This messes up your sleep, you don't get to REM sleep, you don't dream, you snore, and all these issues cause fatigue. In bad cases it can cause heart problems and even death...see ex-Packer Reggie White.

Fuck this Zepbound:

Zepbound may cause serious side effects, including:

Severe stomach problems. Stomach problems, sometimes severe, have been reported in people who use Zepbound. Tell your healthcare provider if you have stomach problems that are severe or will not go away.

Kidney problems (kidney failure). Diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting may cause a loss of fluids (dehydration), which may cause kidney problems. It is important for you to drink fluids to help reduce your chance of dehydration.

Gallbladder problems. Gallbladder problems have happened in some people who use Zepbound. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get symptoms of gallbladder problems, which may include pain in your upper stomach (abdomen), fever, yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice), or clay-colored stools.

Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis). Stop using Zepbound and call your healthcare provider right away if you have severe pain in your stomach area (abdomen) that will not go away, with or without vomiting. You may feel the pain from your abdomen to your back.

Serious allergic reactions. Stop using Zepbound and get medical help right away if you have any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat, problems breathing or swallowing, severe rash or itching, fainting or feeling dizzy, or very rapid heartbeat.

Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Your risk for getting low blood sugar may be higher if you use Zepbound with medicines that can cause low blood sugar, such as a sulfonylurea or insulin. Signs and symptoms of low blood sugar may include dizziness or light-headedness, sweating, confusion or drowsiness, headache, blurred vision, slurred speech, shakiness, fast heartbeat, anxiety, irritability, mood changes, hunger, weakness or feeling jittery.

Changes in vision in patients with type 2 diabetes. Tell your healthcare provider if you have changes in vision during treatment with Zepbound.

Depression or thoughts of suicide. You should pay attention to changes in your mood, behaviors, feelings or thoughts. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any mental changes that are new, worse, or worry you.

Common side effects

The most common side effects of Zepbound include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, stomach (abdominal) pain, indigestion, injection site reactions, feeling tired, allergic reactions, belching, hair loss, and heartburn. These are not all the possible side effects of Zepbound. Talk to your healthcare provider about any side effect that bothers you or doesn’t go away.

CPAP Side Effects:

Nasal congestion and runny nose can occur with CPAP use. People undergoing CPAP therapy may also experience dry nose from the forced air flowing into the nose. The flow of dry air can lead to nosebleeds and crusting. Dry noses with CPAP use are particularly common in climates with cold weather or low humidity.

My CPAP machine has a water chamber that provides warm humid air. It's actually a blessing during the winter.

I love how they're crediting the drug for easing sleep apnea, when it's really losing the fat that does it. If these people exercised more, they wouldn't need the drug and its side effects.

I know this because I have a mild form of it, and the closer I get to 200 pounds, the better I sleep.

Quaestor said...

Be sure to file a report with the Department of Redundancy Department.

Narr said...

When I weighed 270+ I had sleep apnea and used a CPAP.

Then I lost fifty pounds and didn't need the machine as much, so I haven't used it in years--which is just as well since I got a recall notice not long after I stopped.

I've gained some of the fat back but don't intend to return to the CPAP, or to take the deadly drugs they push so assiduously.

Some of the cheesy commercials for these deadly miracle concoctions--featuring happy dancing fatties--are cringy-fun.

wendybar said...

I, too use a CPAP machine like Curious George says. I love it. I get to sleep through the night, and find I can't sleep without it now, even if I lay down for a nap.
I even bought a small generator for it, (that I keep charged..check every 6 months!) in case we lose power like we did during Superstorm Sandy for 2 weeks. My fisherman friend recommended it for me, as he uses one when he goes out to sea!! I barely slept at all during that time.

I wake up gasping for breath, and it isn't obesity that caused my problems, it is chronic sinus problems which sometimes causes me to breathe through my mouth.

I actually recommended to people who swear by it too. People who don't need one can't understand what it feels like to not be able to breath properly.

Approximately on purpose is less accidental than deliberately on purpose. Remember, the wise practice safety first, if not sooner.

i never went in and got diagnosed with sleep apnea..
But i've certainly noticed that i breath (and sleep) much better now (258lbs yesterday);

Does this surprise ANYONE? if so; WHY?

While perhaps not intended, I think the usage here is both proper and particularly appropriate. Articles that repeat the talking point will be published repeatedly, and the double use of the "repeat" form really emphasizes this.

Little known fact: Gina is the more cerebral but less famous sister of Pina Kolata.

Curious, dont be hating on the Zepbound, and I hope people wont be judgmental toward those who take it. It could be a life saver for many, and a life enhancer for many more. It's kind of the Holy Grail for weight loss. Could the the drug BOAT (biggest of all time). My common side effect of owning LLY is lots of unrealized gains. The market will shake out whether the side effects outweigh the benefits since millions have been and will be taking it.

BarrySanders20 said...

Another common side effect of Zepbound is needing a new wardrobe.

Enigma said...

I knew someone who died from sleep apnea after their insurance company denied a doctor's request for surgery. "It's typically not fatal" they said. That was before the rise of CPAP treatments.

IMO there's a good chance that apnea is worsened by food-based inflammation that goes beyond obesity. Some foods are documented to irritate and inflame the throat with some people (e.g., peanuts, chocolate).

I can understand not wanting to conspicuously reuse a word in a sentence, but your two repeats perform different functions, so they are at least correct; whereas Kolata's repeated "repeatedly" is an example of bad editing.

tim maguire said...

I don't have sleep apnea, but my weight has fluctuated over the last half dozen years as I (repeatedly) recover from and then reinjure my knee. When my weight is higher, I snore more and spend more time sleeping on an air mattress in the basement.

CPAPs are the bomb. You're tested for it now with a small take-home diagnostic device that you strap to your chest, overnight. I'm only slightly overweight, but I was diagnosed with mild apnea, and with the CPAP I sleep pretty well now, certainly an improvement. It does make a significant difference for many though, and it's not terribly intrusive, as medical devices go. It's worth looking into especially when your spouse is a snorer, even if they don't have apnea, technically. The positive pressure just keeps the airway propped open and the glottis back, so - no more snoring.

Being an unsatisfactory fat body is a disease of the mind and intestines. Telling people to just exercise more and eat less is bullshit advice. That's like telling someone with no legs that they need to get 10,000 steps in every day. It's a known fact that the corruption of the gut bacteria by ultra processed foods creates irresistible lizard brain hunger pangs.

The only non-farmaceutical solution is to go on a super restrictive diet that includes a repopulation of the gut bacteria. It's looking more and more like the only real solution for this path is a fecal transplant from a skinny person. Probiotics and high fiber doesn't act quickly enough for people to make a real change.

In the meantime if you've got to take some other pharmaceutical that messes with your glucose metabolism to lose weight then by all means do that. Every day that you spend as a disgusting pile of blubber it's destroying your life. Research is showing that every single major disease group including heart disease dementia and cancer are directly related to metabolic disorder obesity etc. The sooner you can stop the decay and destruction, the better.

I wish each and everyone of you the best of luck. It's not easy and being obese is not your fault guilt and shame only serve to prevent you from getting better. Don't listen to the scolds.

I feel qualified to comment on this as I have sleep apnea and take Rybelsus (which is a semaglutide medication that utilizes the same ingredient/mechanism as found in Zepbound.) I was diagnosed as Type 2 Diabetic last year, despite not being substantially overweight and rowing, running, walking, and lifting weights several times per week. The Rybelsus was prescribed for the T2D and not for any weight loss reason, although I have certainly lost some weight since being on it. It makes sense to me that losing weight with some of these drugs would result in fewer apnea symptoms, since obstructive sleep apnea is a result of the weight of tissues closing off the airway. Unfortunately, my sleep apnea is not the obstructive type, and so I don't expect that whatever weight I lose will help me get any better sleep.

Walter, I have eliminated almost all refined sugar from my diet, and eat mostly low carb.
