"A young man set himself on fire on Friday afternoon near the Lower Manhattan courthouse where jury selection continued in the criminal trial of former President Donald J. Trump."

"The man doused himself with a liquid around 1:35 p.m. in Collect Pond Park, across the street from the courthouse.... It was unclear what motivated his action. People rushed over to try to extinguish the fire, but the intensity of the heat could be felt several hundred feet away. After a few minutes, dozens of police officers rushed over and tried to smother the flames. The man, who appeared to be alive, was loaded into an ambulance and rushed away."

The NYT reports.

Across the street from the courthouse, police are gathered examining the area where a man set himself aflame.... The air has a somewhat charred scent.

One bystander described the incident, saying: “He made a noise and he threw all those pamphlets. I don’t know if the cops will ever release that but those pamphlets have the answers of whatever the hell…convinced himself to kill himself… It’s just shocking. I mean, I couldn’t do anything. It’s honestly hard to even process in your brain. There’s some people crying in the park… There’s just nothing you can do. He’s burning himself…”

UPDATE: From New York Magazine:

Isabelle Brourman, a courtroom sketch artist, said she saw a man who wrapped himself in an American flag and light himself on fire in the park outside court. He didn’t say anything even as bystanders shouted for him to stop.

And there's a tweet that says: "He had been outside protesting all week. Julie Berman, 56, of Manhattan, said she had come down to the courthouse to take pictures of the protesters, and said the man was carrying a sign that said something about Biden, Trump and a coup." That suggests it was related to the Trump trial, and — based on the use of the word "coup" — that the man was anti-Trump.

ANOTHER UPDATE: The Daily Mail has pictures of the man's sign and of the pamphlet, and it appears that the man saw Biden and Trump working together on a "fascist world coup."

I don’t identify MAGA country as the self immolating type.

But if it was protesting against Trump, someone forgot to tell them Trump is not president.

If anything, the trial is about making sure he’s not president again.

There’s a lot of confusion out there.

No one picked up one of his pamphlets?

It could have nothing to do with being for or against Trump, the man may have just gone to where he knew there would be people and cameras.

Once the liquid is splashed about but not yet lit, would you go in and try to stop him?

Seems like there were a lot of people in the area just standing by.

And somehow he didn't manage to announce his reason for the protest.

I guess the answer is in the pamphlets, and the authorities aren't publicizing the contents.

Not until I saw method to assure it wouldn't be lit. And I don't see one.

That suggests it was related to the Trump trial, and — based on the use of the word "coup" — that the man was anti-Trump.

I think this is inconclusive. I've seen plenty of references to 'coup' as the installation of Biden via shady voting practices and J6 being engineered by various TLAs to prevent investigation. The anti-Trump talking point is almost always 'insurrection'.

His substack and instragram have been identified, and images of the pamphlets are available. He's clearly a mentally ill person and there's no rationality to ascribe to his theories or his actions.

The man was just identified by NYPD as Maxwell Crosby Azzarello. And also mentioned that he wrote a Substack essay. The moment that they mentioned it, I searched him online and found the complete Substack. I hit 'print' before it could be deleted. I expect a lot of people did. So it will certainly be posted in full, and soon.

I just read it. It's 9 pages in Substack format. It is pure conspiratorial rambling. And it is a kind of suicide note. The general subject matter is a giant "Ponzi scheme" surrounding cryptocurrency. The writer mentions Peter Thiel, Jeffrey Epstein, and a string of politicians including Dukakis, Bush, Clinton, Gore, Hillary and Trump. Broadly speaking, he equates them all as part of a kind of grand government conspiracy.

He launches into paragraphs of episodes of "The Simpsons." (I am not kidding here.)

He signs off as "Max Azzarello."

Althouse; nota bene. There isn't a single phrase in these nine pages that would seriously qualify as "anti-Trump." You're going to want to reconsider that.

That would typically indicate the contents reflect poorly on leftists. If the fault could be laid at Trump's feet, it would be on every news station right now.

cfs said...

I've seen reports that his name is Max Azzarello. Apparently he is still upset about last year's Silicon Valley bank failure and something about Peter Theil & bank-runs plus also something about cryptocurrency. It's reported that he has a Substack page and has written extensively on the subject.

Seems unlikely. A football field is several hundred feet in length, a fire large enough that you can feel its heat from that far away would be one big-ass fire.

As mentioned above thread, for his sake and his family's sake, I hope he doesn't survive and just passes while under sedation with fentanyl and other pain meds. Instead of wasting money on illegals, deport them on the spot and use the money that is being spent on them on the seriously mentally ill in decent institutions.

That Substack is sad and scary. Clearly he's a paranoid schizophrenic. Imagine having to live with that running around your brain constantly.

I'm sure there's some reason why, but it seems like schizophrenics never hear imaginary supportive voices telling them that they're wonderful people. Or maybe some do, and those people just become politicians.

I have used up my allotment of free NYMag articles for the month. Did somebody with NYMag speak to him on the record? I ask not because your writing wasn't clear, but rather because I wanted to emphasize that "Trump's in on it" does not appear in his 'suicide' Substack column. His only mention of Trump is when he says, "Clinton is with Bush, Gore is with Bush, Trump is with Hillary, and so on..."

Chuck said...

More than five hours after NYPD said that they would seek the removal of the Max Azzarello Substack, it's still online. The 9-page 'suicide' post, as well as a large handful of other thoroughly crazy conspiracy rants. Each one as loony as the next.

This is so surprising to me. Perhaps the reason Substack hasn't removed it is because there was no other victim to protect in an investigation; or perhaps because Substack has layered rules for removing posts without the author's say-so, and they haven't yet legally satisfied all the layers.

Chuck checked it out, but can't find a way. Gadfly is hopeful. Tea Bag Hag is certain.

If this unfortunate lunatic were to have said or written something, anything at all, at any time, which could be construed either in support of or against Trump, it would no doubt lend credence to the proposition that Trump is very bad, and evil, and his supporters are lunatics, or evil, or uncaring.

That's how it works.
