"What I didn’t tell the guard... is that I’m tired of hiding from my country—and that I want to trade one form of hiding for another."

"I have conducted my adult life as if censorship and propaganda were my natural enemies, but now some broken part of me is homesick for that world. I want to be deceived, to forget that there is a war going on...."

Writes Vadim Shyslov, in "Give Me Propaganda or Give Me Death/When Russia went to war, I faced a choice: Flee to a world where the truth might kill me—or seek peace in censored oblivion" (Wired).
Masha Borzunova, a journalist who fled Russia... walked me through a typical day of Russian TV: “A person wakes up to a news broadcast that shows how the Russian military is making gains. Then Anti-Fake begins, where the presenters dismantle the fake news of Western propaganda and propagate their own fake news. Then there’s the talk show Time Will Tell that runs for four, sometimes five hours, where we’ll see Russian soldiers bravely advancing. Then comes Male and Female.... Then more news and a few more talk shows, in which a KGB combat psychic predicts Russia’s future and what will happen on the front. This is followed by the game show Field of Miracles.... And then, of course, the evening news.”
I had gone from being infuriated by this kind of hypnosis to envying it. The free flow of information had become for me what a jug of water is to a severely dehydrated person: The right amount can save you, but too much can kill....

IIRC Frank Zappa predicted this social structure. He made it into music.
Genius.

Plant a little garden

The first part sounds like United States television- a morning of manipulative ‘news’ programs followed by The View

Ever watch the mini-Fem-KGB-Putins on the The View?

Two quotes from the article caught my eye:

"(Russian) News media websites were blocked in accordance with the new law on “fake news” about Ukraine."

"how the regime passed a law that would allow it to confiscate property from people who spread falsehoods ........"

Amazing parallels. 1) Social media censoring alleged disinformation during the runup to the 2020 election and 2) Confiscate property of the opposition.

Predictability is the security blanket of the mind. The heuristics of the human mind can imitate truth. Cognitive dissonance can be unpleasant.

That totally made my day!

Thank you, Professor!

Unfortunately, that very battle between truth and censored oblivion is now taking place, internally, here in the US and throughout the west.

There was a time, when I was much younger, when I wondered at the fact that Russian news was all propaganda and I somehow lucked out being born in a country with an honest government/press. Yeah, I used to be pretty gullible. Perhaps still am.

Howard actually said, "the hatred that ... Trumpers have for America." Is this absurd statement the result of ignorance or mendacity? It's hard to pick. Neither seems like it could explain such an obvious untruth. I suppose if I had to choose, I'd go with the former. I suspect that there are many who are victims of leftist indoctrination in the American educational system and relentless leftist propaganda from the MSM.

I was in college in the early 80s. My history professor, who was teaching a freshman seminar on the industrial revolution in England, spent a significant amount of time every class bitching about ... Ronald Reagan. The day after the 1984 election that Reagan won 49 out of 50 states, my organic chemistry professor started class by sitting on his desk, sighing a big sigh, and saying something that assumed everyone in the class was upset about the outcome.

I think that once the left gets it hooks into the minds of young people, it's not so hard to keep them on the mental reservation. Even absurd propaganda works. Considering the possibility that their whole world view is wrong must be too psychologically painful. Sadly, most of my family members are like this.

Likewise, my history prof in the late Seventies was hostile toward religionists, people who exceeded the 55mph limit on the California freeways, and Laverne & Shirley. It was surprising he had little to say about Gerald Ford; but all was good because Jerry Brown was governor so he had nothing to kvetch about on that front. He wanted to mount a cannon on his hood so he could administer instant justice to the speeders.

Are you still celebrating the tearing down of our founding father statues by your woke antifa heroes?

Over-compensating Non-combat "vet" Howitzer Howard's entire schtick is to take whatever his New Soviet Democraticals are doing and simply plug in as the responsible party the other side.

In the past he has claimed modern conservatives/republicans were the slavers, Jim Crow-ers and segregation-ers, as well as responsible for obamacare failure, open borders, etc.

Howard is the adolescent version of an even less capable LLR-democratical Chuck.

Is it just me or does Howard seem to be following Brandon down the rathole of lunacy and irrelevance.

In Brandon's case it seems due dementia or the pretence thereof.

In Howard's it seems like he's imagining monsters under the bed.

The VA has programs that can help.

Our propaganda is in some ways worse, because it's done voluntarily with no need for censorship laws. If Biden gets any stinging criticism, he doesn't even have to mutter anything about "rid me of this troublesome priest" before his lackeys and arse-lickers in the media rally to his defense and attack his detractors.

As opposed to "honest journalism" where Ukraine is making gains every day.

BTW, the real haters of America are the ones who want us bogged down in constant overseas warfare. I just missed Viet Nam as the draft ended soon before I turned 18, but I am still going to count looking at images of that war on TV, watching that foolish waste of human lives. As long as my memory goes back, the years when we were not involved, either directly, like in Panama, or the bombing of Yugoslavia, or indirectly, like in Ukraine, seem to have been few. If jingoism is what Howard thinks is great about America, I feel sad for the old man.

John, Howard would have to an actual former marine to get to use the VA.

I wrote it last week, I think- Howard is spinning out of control because Biden turned out to be everything the Democrats claimed Trump was for 9 years. Howard is at least honest enough to be affected by that that, and he even admits that with the occasional lucid comment.

On St Patrick's Day, Joe Biden appeared with the Prime Minister of Ireland, who had the audacity, in the emperor's presence, to criticize Gaza policy, a position that is very popular in Ireland, BTW. This week he unexpectedly resigned for "personal reasons." We should just get it over with and have an "Empire Day," like St George's Day used to be in England. It would be more honest. Instead of lying to us constantly, from telling us that it was not a lab leak that killed millions worldwide, to declaring that evidence of Joe Biden's venal corruption is Russian disinformation, and that to believe it is traitorous. Well, Howard believes it, I guess.

Anyway, we found out what really would have happened to Hugh Grant's character in Love Actually, had he criticized American policy in the presence of a US President. Europe is run by a bunch of corrupt hacks, and is already post-democratic, and they are bringing post democracy here, because they think that they cannot fix climate change if the people have a say in their policies.

"Amazing parallels"

Every accusation is a confession with these people.

"Love it or leave it" that was a pro-Viet Nam war slogan, between that, and the domino theory, pro Viet Nam War propaganda tropes are making a real comeback.

A couple of my favorite Howard-isms include his inadvertantly hilarious over the top "explainer for white people" BLM treatise in 2020.

Hiward's white knighting for the movement (which naturally turned out to be the purchasing of many houses for BLM founders) was written as if he had deep insight into black America psychology and had to be translated to the rest of us as if it were an act of noblesse oblige on his part!

Truly a classic.

Another classic Howardism was his assertion that the antifa types deserved the equivalent if US military retirees retirement pay...since...you know...antifa was JUST LIKE the brave lads that stormed Normandy in 1944.

Remember when that was the go to meme on the left? Well Howie bit hard on that one...along with all the other ones his betters expected him to bite on.

Another particularly Howard-ish quirk is his habit of screwing things up and getting the basics wrong, when he isnt doing his middle school gaslighting, and then when called on it he curls up in a rhetorical fetal position while claiming "I meant that" as if it were a ploy to get others to jump on it.

Thanks for reaching "deep" and dredging up your most poignant response. I know how fatiguing that can be for you.

And your sad attempt to speak for others to create a crowd you can hide behind is just another, of many, markers of extreme insecurity.

Try standing on your own sometime...if you have it in you.
