I know a thing or two about Charles de Gaulle, but I didn't know he had a son--and that son died yesterday at the age of 102. The only child of CdG's I knew about was the retarded daughter.

RIP, Admiral.

Congratulations to the Wisconsin basketball team, on its way to tomorrow’s Big Ten Basketball Tournament finals. Not only did they beat Purdue (ranked #3 in the nation) in overtime, but they did it with three key players on the bench having fouled out.

On Wisconsin.

What the hell has happened to charging in college basketball? Not only do they have to scrape you off the floor when you get run over by 7'4", 300 lb Zack Edey, but you also get charged with a foul for having the temerity to occupy the same court as his highness. This afternoon's officiating was embarrassing.

It isn't Biden's "age" that concerns us. Not all 80-year-olds are equal. But when he instantly gets hyper-focused while exhibiting angry bursts of energy during a debate or SOTU, then the next day transforms back to a state of extreme bumbling confusion, something ain't right.

The coastal elites and other assorted lefties do not understand why Trump is surging in the polls. Even worse, for some mysterious reason, they view endorsing illegals invading the US by the millions is a political plus. One would think the videos of the surge would cause Biden's wizards of smart to pause, at least until November. But no. Talk about willful ignorance.

Now Trump is talking about deportations, another selling feature with the deplorables. Hooboy.

This is why Pelosi's son and Biden's son, and Romney's campaign manager, those are only ones that we know of, were all involved in companies in the Ukraine that received foreign aide from the US. This is why it's a "threat to 'our democracy'" if Ukraine loses.

Regime propaganda is funny. I was watching Bloomberg of a little while yesterday and they had a segment about how brutally expensive new cars have become for lower end buyers but that upper income people were able to manage inflation just fine, then the next segment was about how great the economy is and how Biden's biggest problem is voter perceptions of it.

They only seem stupid because they need us to believe lies for them to get what they want. The mask slips on Bloomberg every once in a while because the whole value proposition from Bloomberg is that you can trust their data and news for your investment strategies, that's how Bloomberg himself became a billionaire. On their morning show they have two data people, and one political officer, I call her. The data people are very skeptical of Biden and open to Trump's arguments, but the political officer is there to make sure that Biden's talking points are delivered, and that the other two don't get out of hand. As for the propaganda, I used to be disgusted, now I'm just amused.

Some people speculate that if Trump is convicted and jailed in NYC, we will have our Bastille Moment.

I don't think this is a good analogy.

At the time the Bastille was stormed, it was nearly empty, housing only seven prisoners: four forgers arrested under warrants issued by the Grand Châtelet court; James F.X. Whyte, an Irish born "lunatic" suspected of spying and imprisoned at the request of his family; Auguste-Claude Tavernier, who had tried to assassinate Louis XV thirty years before; and one "deviant" aristocrat suspected of murder. That's the entire list of prisoners who were "liberated."

@tim in vermont: Regime propaganda is funny. I was watching Bloomberg

IMO Bloomberg is the most ego-driven and manipulative billionaire in the world. He's certainly equal to Soros, Klaus Schwab, Gates, Zuckerberg, Trump, and Musk, but seems to work hard at avoiding a high-profile reputation. He's not an ideological democrat nor an ideological republican. He's an opportunist, manipulator, tyrant, and oligarch.

He OWNS Wall St., as Bloomberg terminals are essential for competitive stock trading. In owning the key trading platform, he makes $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ all the time and can donate millions to petty little Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, or AOC to shift any election anywhere and any time. Beyond deep pockets and the control of finance, he likes to monkey with local gun laws too. It's mostly utopian fantasy stuff that is rapidly shot down by the courts, but it parallels the anti-Trump lawfare strategy of "throw everything against the wall and see what sticks." Perhaps he designed that plan too.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloomberg_Terminal

His massive spending in the 2020 and 2022 elections (plus having a staff of world-class finance mathematicians) likely contributed to the success of the Democrat's ballot harvesting strategy:

https://www.forbes.com/sites/michelatindera/2021/11/05/heres-where-mike-bloomberg-the-biggest-spender-in-the-2020-election-has-donated-this-year/?sh=256fb5a25a10

He, and Bill Gates via MSNBC, have likely been behind efforts to tar Trump as a racist, if only because his "joining" of the Democratic Party as a 2020 presidential candidate exposed his...condescending, bullying, racist, and elitist...views on minorities in NYC:

"People say, 'Oh my God, you are arresting kids for marijuana who are all minorities.' Yes, that's true. Why? Because we put all the cops in the minority neighborhoods. Yes, that's true. Why'd we do it? Because that's where all the crime is. And the way you should get the guns out of the kids' hands is throw them against the wall and frisk them," Bloomberg says.

@Dave Begley: If he is jailed in NYC, we will have our Bastille Moment.

The Left has pushed and pushed. What did they expect?

The Right is and has always been clueless about effective protesting, and never showed resolve after Jan 6. They ducked into closets and kept their powder dry. Their big Jan 6 moment was (a) likely manipulated by home turf DC Deep State people, and (b) they allowed themselves to be suckered into committing prosecutable crimes and judged in the DC courts. While perhaps an imagery win (e.g., feet on Nancy's desk; the Shaman's iconic photos, etc.), they were all trapped and pulled off of their core message.

If the Right wants a Bastille Moment they'll have to duplicate the old 1960s Civil Rights and anti-Vietnam strategy: Large crowds all over the country every week and every month. Large, active, committed crowds who spend money and suffer physical discomfort. This means getting out there and doing something. The Left uses small, cheap physical protests to produce massive attention and disruption (e.g., gluing themselves to the street, splashing red paint on something or other). The Right...hmmm.....hmmm....? Beyond Jan 6, they hold peaceful rallies in churches and stadiums, pick up the trash, and go home to sleep.

Today's left and right are both ideological hybrids: Many on the left are conservatives with a dogmatic (and greedy) world vision, and fighting yesterday's battles and inadvertently undoing yesterday's BIG lefty wins. Many on the right are live-and-let live libertarians who are not 'conservative' nor actively engaged, and are thereby functionally equal to lefty bohemians. The Liz Cheneys (nominal "R") and Joe Rogans (nominal "D") of this world are now realigning to form coherent worldviews.

Yesterday, the temperature reached 77F! A beautiful, late winter day, with the Sun out in its full glory. We'll have good weather through Tuesday, then the PNW's natural rainy climate reclaims its throne for the 10 days after Tuesday.

It was a great day to start installing three additional hydraulic circuits on my compact tractor. One was a 3rd-function for the front loader and two read circuits for the three point hitch. One of those two will power an hydraulic top link. The 3rd-function circuit can power a front auger for digging fence post holes in our rocky soil. A front auger can power through any rocks which a back auger would just bounce off.

I finished the hydraulic circuit install yesterday. Today will be the electrical controls.

That's why it's crucial that the $60B Ukraine funding pass. Those secret bank accounts won't fund themselves! The Pentagon doesn't have a clue where all the money and arms went. Mitch McConnel, Bernie Sanders and others have vacation homes and yachts they need to pay for. It's just not fair that that mean ol' Mike Johnson won't ok their kickbacks!

And so, in no particular order, here's a bill of particulars by the defense against Fani Willis and her now former very special prosecutor, Nathan Wade. Tell me if you don't think this reads like a "your DA so crooked" version of The Dozens:

Fani Willis is so crooked she ignored her prosecutor's oath to act impartially out of "political ambition"
Fani Willis is so crooked she broke her oath not take any money beyond her salary
Fani Willis is so crooked her affair with her very special prosecutor is a conflict of interest
Starting her affair was the "original sin" leading them to "perpetuate and conceal" their relationship
Fani Willis is so crooked she got her office to lie for her about her affair
Fani Willis's Church Speech was meant to inject alleged racism "to deflect against her own misconduct"
Fani's very special prosecutor lied in his divorce documents and to the court about the nature of their relationship
Fani and her very special prosecutor's Biden White House meetings and communications are believed to be legal strategy sessions in coordination and haven't been fully explained
Fani is so crooked she filed a protective order against the very special prosecutor's wife in his divorce case
Fani is so crooked her office put people on the stand they knew would lie
Fani is so crooked she broke the local ordinance about receiving gifts from contractors
She broke the federal bribery statute by receiving gifts of more than $5,000
Fani's office is so crooked they never provided evidence to the contrary about the boss's "invisible magic cash balancing" theory
Fani wrote a book using secret grand jury testimony, documents, and recordings upon which she based her book, but denied a defense motion to see them
Fani failed to disclose the gifts from her very special prosecutor as the law requires
Fani lied on her disclosure forms to the county and state to evade detection of her affair
Fani never got required county approval to name her boyfriend to the case
Fani's very special prosecutor "got on the stand and lied about lying in his interrogatories" about his divorce
Fani and her office "did nothing to correct obviously perjured testimony"
Fani violated her obligation as a prosecutor to serve her personal interests
Fani violated rules of professional conduct when she threatened to criminally charge her very special prosecutor's wife "to gain advantage in a civil case" (his divorce proceedings)
Fani's prosecutors were directed to hide the affair during the hearing by objecting on attorney-client privilege grounds on behalf of very special prosecutor Nathan Wade when they weren't their rights to assert
One sly commenter noted on my piece yesterday, "the case against Fani was stronger than the one she has against Trump."

The Pentagon doesn't have a clue where all the money and arms went.

I wouldn’t bet on that. Generals and colonels need nice mansions in pleasant climates to retire to, too. As I’ve been saying since my two years as a draftee stationed in the Pentagon back during Vietnam, they tell you “Duty. Honor, Country,” but first comes their career. And I recently read that West Point has dropped those three words from its mission statement.

In the second-to-last sunrise post before this one (link) 'tim in vermont' posted a quotation in italics that I was unable to find on DuckDuckGo and that proved to be false. He has since deleted it.

Now here's another unlinked italicized quotation, attributed to Steven McIntyre, a man who knows a great deal about climate 'science' but has no particular knowledge of Ukraine. When I DuckDuckGo the first nine words, this post comes up with "No more results found for 'massive embezzlement of IMF and US funds by corrupt'". Curious.

Why doesn't 'tim in vermont' provide a link? Surely because it would tell us when this was said, if it was said at all. It was basically true (though exaggerated) up until five years ago: Ukraine, like all other post-Soviet states - Russia emphatically included - was corrupt and ruled by oligarchs, most recently Yanukovych, brutally violent as well as corrupt ('tim in vermont' still mourns his flight to Moscow), and then Poroshenko.

But they voted Poroshenko, the last of the oligarchs, out in 2019, voting in a comic actor (and lawyer) with no political experience, in a 73% landslide. As noted before, Zelenskyy is the Ukrainian Trump, elected because he was an outsider. And he has been cleaning up the corruption, including removing the 'chairman' of the Supreme Court (I think that's the Chief Justice) and other powerful people. And Hunter Biden closed up his business dealings in Ukraine the same month Zelenskyy came to power.

The quoted statement is in fact no longer true. There is no evidence whatsoever that any of the aid sent to Zelenskyy's government has gone back to the Pentagon or Congress as bribes. They need it all to defend themselves from a brutal aggressor.

Finally, note that 'tim in vermont' had nothing to say about the leader of the Russich party suing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for calling him a "Ukrainian Neo-Nazi". That's slander: he's a proud and patriotic Russian Neo-Nazi (link)!

That is laughably naive. Cash doesn't change hands.
I'll give you an example. All the red light cameras in Chicago are owned by an Irish company.
I'll tell you why since you're so curious. A company incorporated in Ireland doesn't have to reveal who the corporate owners are. Wanna know who the corporate ownwers are. Glad you asked. The Daley family and their friends. Military aid to Ukraine isn't shipped directly from one military to the other. It needs to be trucked from one place to another. The trucks are owned by family or friends of politicians. Stuff isn't stored in government warehouses. It's stored in warehouses of politicians family and friends. Cash doesn't have to be in an envelope. All you need to do is provide a "service" that is indespensible to that activity. Ukraine is at least as corrupt as Chicago. How do I know this? Because they always have been.
We have absolutely no business giving Ukraine anything.

Dr Weevil said...

Rusty:

1. So you just assume Ukraine is as corrupt as Chicago because you want to believe it? I pointed out that they elected an anti-corruption candidate (Zelenskyy) and he has in fact been firing and prosecuting corrupt politicians, and you insist that "they always have been" corrupt, as if nothing has changed.

2. Are our weapons stored in warehouses owned by politicians, or in military warehouses? There are plenty of pictures and videos on-line of (e.g.) Bradleys being loaded on a roll-on-roll-off ship (ARC Integrity) in Charleston for shipment to Europe. If you have any evidence whatsoever of corruption, present it.

3. The fact that the U.S. has sent very few if any weapons or ammunition or anything else to Ukraine in the last 4-5 months pretty well proves that they're not bribing U.S. politicians to do so. Or is Russia bribing them more generously and effectively?

4. Most important, your last statement is simply false. Bill Clinton convinced Ukraine to give up their nuclear weapons and long-range bombers in return for a guarantee of their 1991 borders. We are required by treaty to provide arms to Ukraine. Not doing so is not only immoral and unethical, it's illegal and (I think) unconstitutional.

And it's having a very nasty effect on the world: lots of countries that were not planning to acquire nuclear weapons are seriously thinking about doing so now, after they saw what happened when Ukraine gave them up. Countries I've heard mentioned are Italy, Poland, Sweden, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. The world is becoming a far more dangerous place because Biden and Johnson refuse to do their duty and arm Ukraine.

Other countries that see Putin getting away with invading Ukraine are thinking of following his example: Venezuela would not be threatening Guyana, or the Houthis closing the Red Sea, if Biden were doing his job, and China would be far less likely to invade Taiwan, which would destroy the world economy more effectively than the Great Depression.
