And all to the "Succession" theme:
March 25, 2024
"Nineteen-year-old American superstar Ilia Malinin scored a record 227.79 in the free skate, winning his first world title by landing the best collection of jumps..."
"... in one program in figure skating history.
Malinin landed a quadruple Axel, quad Lutz, quad loop, quad Salchow, another quad Lutz and a quad toe loop, then finished his four-minute skate with a a triple Lutz-triple Axel finale."

White man can jump.
That was awesome!

Amazing athlete!
Made it look easy.
Ha. This should be a companion post to the Beyonce one from yesterday. All of these quad leaps look the same to me, yet they're categorized by foot positions on take-off (I think). It's as esoteric as the leg movements of a trotting horse.
Such an impressive athlete! Thx for sharing this.
Figure skating can't decide if it wants to be about artistry and dancing or brute force jumping.
That's amazing. Not an exaggeration from them saying one of the best moments in sport. Perfection...
Impressive, though it seems a bit silly to put much stock in all time scoring records in judged sports.
What will it take next time- a quint?
So much advancement in the sport. At least the plush toy remains.
Good choice on the Succession Theme. That music really gets in my head, and I love it
Thanks for sharing, pretty magnificent.

Actually, there has been a lot of evolution in the way this sport is scored, taking away much of the subjectivity — though there is no way to eliminate all of it. My wife used to be addicted to watching figure skating competitions so we’ve seen it evolve over time.

And landing- landing jumps is easier if you come down facing away from your direction of lateral motion.
Just wow.
Obviously he has no problem with his inner ears. One twirl and I'd be on the ground.
I never could ice skate very well.
Thank you for sharing.
just watching makes me feel twisted up > need to untwist by quad-twirling the other way
are there any 'ambi-dexterous' skaters?
Amazing. Thanks for that.
They say the really great make hard stuff look effortless. The 4 min mark of the video, his expression is awesome. Thank you for sharing.
Wow. Slow motion replays of the rotations are required. I'll bet he has a vertical jump in the 44 inch range.
He's peaking 2 years before the Olympics. It will be interesting to see if he can sustain it.

Also if going forward or backward at start of jump, whether any propulsion help from toe of other foot, and arm positions (same or opposite arm extended).
This is not my sport, and I recall the girls swooning over John Misha Petkavitch but being unimpressed that the athleticism was all that masculine. But this kid is the real deal. Thanks.
The Quad Lutz has always been my nemesis.
That and trying to keep my ankles straight.
I am old enough to remember when ice skating was graceful and lovely. I blame them removing the "figure" from figure skating. Now it is more like acrobatics on ice.

Fantastic! Bravissimo! Of course, I've no idea what any of those things mean, but sure sounds impressive. But the real question is- can he use those skills to get past the defenders to get the puck into the net? Probably not. So count me as one of those who don't really care about this record breaking performance.
I can always count on our hostess for a very edgy post.

Amazing feats. Anything but forward for me and I execute the DoubleButtCheek maneuver, with low technical ability. Did the Russian judge give him a 4.7/10? Prime time for young American skaters. The wonderkid (19) from Wisconsin just won worlds in speed skating and is a big deal among the Europeans who follow that sport.
Mesmerizing. Absolutely jaw-dropping skate program.
I don't really know much about figure skating, but USA USA USA!
This world championships this year provided outstanding results for the USA. Best in a long time! In addition to Ilia there was Isabeau Levito - Silver - Women's singles and Repeat Gold for Chock and Bates - Dance.
Spectacular and thrilling to witness something no one else in the world can do. And he made it look easy. Thanks for posting!

So the mail-in votes from Democrats been received already?
Outstanding performance by a young athlete.
Note he's got NO grievances, no tattoos, no gender-politics, no virtue-signaling, no kneeling for BLM, no anti-USA rhetoric.
Wow. I bet now he can afford buy his coach a pair of jeans with no holes in them.
What a beautiful, clean program! You could see that he was tired at the end but hung on to stick that final landing.
Sadly, the removal of compulsory figures (tracery on the ice) has changed the way the sport looks. Despite their universal dislike, they helped improve mastery of edges and control. So much of it is about knowing how to press into the ice and using the center of the blade (the rocker) to help you maintain your position.
@Kate: It depends on which foot is your take-off, or which foot is used to toe-pick as part of the jump: left foot for a toe-loop, right foot for the lutz. The correct edge (inside or outside) and foot position of the non-loadbearing leg will dictate the jump.
@Yancey Ward: backwards facing jumps are, for the most part, the easiest, starting with waltz, salchow, and toe loop. Lutzes are a little tougher. Axels are scary because you can see what’s happening.
@Narayanan: No ambidexterous. But if you skate goofy (left-handed) everything is in reverse. It can also depend on which eye is dominant. I’m left-handed but I perform my jumps as if I were right-handed (moving counter-clockwise) because I’m right-eye dominant.
White supremacy is a wonder to see. To bad it offends the jealous haters.
The truly great athletes impress those who know nothing about their sport to the point that one is compelled to think, “I’m not sure what I just saw but it’s so incredible it has to be in a class by itself.”
