I have an acquaintance (we coached youth sports together years ago) who supports the Democrats in exactly the same way he supports the Patriots, Bruins, and Red Sox. He has some position in the local party, seems to always be sending emails about fund-raisers, is at every sign-hold (a weird Massachusetts custom), and is one of the people sitting in the Democrats' voter registration / hand out bumper-stickers and t-shirts booth at various town events. Just a total old-school Massachusetts Democrat whose family has been loyal to the party since they came over from Ireland in the 18-whatevers.
No, he's not switching parties.
But he did give me and the other people at the hardware store a full-on rant about how the whole border issue and the illegals (bunches of whom have been shipped to our town by the state). In his view the whole thing comes down to "f-ing retahded D.C. dickheads" who opened the border as part of a "stupid idea" try to get "some @sshole in Texas into the senate." (I am not sure if he meant Beto or someone else).
This then blew up in their faces, and no one is telling Biden (bizarrely, given everything else he was saying) he still supports Biden, who's a "solid guy." His view is that if Biden knew how bad things are, he would close the border, but "there are too many @ssholes in D.C. taking money from corporations," which he thinks want all the illegals here so that they can break up unions.
I report this interaction without really knowing what it all means. My friend isn't going to vote for Trump, and he's not going to stay home either, but his sense of things is that the national Democrats have "screwed the pooch" because they are "no better than the Republicans." It does seem like that in the short run at least*, keeping the border open was a bad miscalculation, because even the most loyal foot-soldiers don't seem to think it was a good idea.
*It's seem like the medium-to-long-term plans, if there are any and this all isn't just a mindless "do the opposite of Trump" idiocy, is (medium) to fill up the country will illegals both for the purposes of preventing redistricting and to continue the flow of $ through local governments and various NGOs; and (long-term) wait for a moment when the Democrats control both chambers (the filibuster will be eliminated for some "immigration emergency") and the Presidency to declare an amnesty and, before the courts can do anything, start handing out IDs to turn all these people into voters.
